I'm assuming there was no father figure around to teach this child to become a man, but at some point she needed to stop babying this kid and let him take care of himself. I'm not saying that anyone "deserves" a beating just becasue they cant fight, but grow up, be a man and stop hiding from underneath your mothers tit!
