36 Reasons Flickr is a Photographer’s Best Friend
blogs.photopreneur.com — As if you needed more reasons, here is a comprehensive list of reasons why Flickr is the ultimate tool for any photographer or wannabe photographer.
- 733 diggs
- digg it
- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -33/+7The number 1 reason I use flickr other then host my own is that my photos get noticed on flickr.
<plug>http://flickr.com/photos/t0ny </plug>- st3vo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or on Digg.
- miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2smugmug is a lot better than flickr. You get what you pay for.
- marc2242, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2It's a decent list.
- cyberdork, on 10/13/2007, -3/+45Flickr is amazing. I once got a request of a small classical-music label in the Netherlands to use one of my photos as a CD cover. I agreed with them that for their small volume pressing they could use it for free.
A couple of months later I received two free copies of the CD with the photo on the cover and on the disc and my name mentioned in the liner notes. Now that was pretty cool.
I should point out that I'm not a professional and more of a casual photographer with a Canon 350D and a couple of cheap lenses.- Sifter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Spot on Cyberdork - the coolest thing about Flickr is the way your stuff gets discovered by other people. The only problem with Flickr the effect "Explore" has had on the site; I find it very rare that subtle pictures end up on explore - it's usually high-contrast, high-impact Photoshopped stuff, which is fine, but a bit more variety would be nice.
- g33kfu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What gets on Explore is by no means random. I don't mind photos with more of a "commercial" polish/quality. If that's what people likes, then all is fair. What gets to me are "Interestingness whores". People would spam their images across as many groups as possible, hoping to get thousands of views, and thus, appearing on Explore. While much more deserving photos goes by unnoticed.
- Xanin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They have recently changed how a photo becomes 'interesting'. Apparently photos that are spammed to many groups (particularly those which require commenting) don't do so well anymore.
- rgaino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Would you be so kind to share with us this picture?
- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Won't give you the link to my flickr account, but here is a pic of the CD

- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Won't give you the link to my flickr account, but here is a pic of the CD
- jedinate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Congratulations ! I have had 2 pics "discovered" as well. One was used in the German magazine- Max in an article about Flickr, the other on a website about dogs, they used my pic as the pic for the breed description of Boxers. Flickr is a great way for us amateurs to be seen by a lot of people.
- ddegner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is the type of story that makes professionals cringe. It might be fun and a good ego boost for you it puts people like me, who have invested years of our life and tens of thousands on equiptment out of business.
If someone is interested in your photo realize what it is worth and charge them for it. They are making money off of you so don't just give it away.

- disabled4diggin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1137. It's pretty much the only picture hosting site that isn't blocked by my companies web filter.
- shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you lucky guy :(
blocked where I'm at
- shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you lucky guy :(
- joeycerone, on 10/11/2007, -26/+3Let me know what you guys think, its not many pics but a few of my favorites. I just got into photography.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joeycerone/ - singletrack861, on 10/11/2007, -21/+312. Promote your site.
Well, if that's what they want us to do, here's my shameless plug. Tell me what you think about them.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/singletrack86/- CrankyPants, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Mostly bad.
- jun2san, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15It seems to me like digg is becoming less of a news site and more of an advertising site.
- outtagetme, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4agreed. nothing but blogspam, retarded lists of *new* great ideas and photos, stupid how-to's, and a bunch of people refering to linux as ubuntu, why the hell do i keep clicking the crap in the rss feed?!?
- palmerized, on 10/11/2007, -15/+2Site is down. Poop.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/palmerized - coheedcollapse, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13There are a few negatives too. Like when I'm randomly browsing and a brilliant photo has no comments and few views and a crappy shot that some bipolar girl took of her cleavage is labeled as "an artistic masterpiece" or "the best photo on flickr!" That really bugs me. Other than that, flickr is cool.
- VictoryGin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8link?
- yfguitarist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Someone sounds bitter that no one likes their photo!
- darknight247, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Looks the site is already down...any mirrors?
- rwallen, on 10/11/2007, -11/+1I'll jump on the bandwagon.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/14881905@N08/- macbth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'll jump on the bandwagon.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dembicer/
- macbth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'll jump on the bandwagon.
- LoudMusic, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7I use Picasa. It kicks ass.
http://picasaweb.google.com/psmyers- gummih, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I do too - and unlike flickr, picasa is still getting better - while flickr is slowly getting worse (I used to be on flickr)
Oh no, I seem to have forgotten to include my urls !!1
- gummih, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I do too - and unlike flickr, picasa is still getting better - while flickr is slowly getting worse (I used to be on flickr)
- Razster, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Least mine have almost nude women.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/solizphotography
I know I will be dug down, but hey - I'm a follower, not a individual. - zorlack, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Something something something.... promote your site http://www.flickr.com/photos/zorlack
- krugerlive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6http://www.flickr.com/photos/12413896@N03/ if anyone wants to see pictures taken from the Galapagos. Shameless self-promotion
- havokzero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Wow, those are some of the best photos I'll probably see today! Screw those diggers who dugg you down... What do you shoot with?
- rwallen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Good pictures. I want a baby penguin as a pet now.
- Zgradis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1cache version?
- Anorhc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I host pictures for miscellaneous things on flickr rather than going to photobucket or imageshack. It's more reliable that way.
Heh, I'm probably using flickr in a way that is not intended to be used. - Threlly, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Yeah, right, owned by Yah-*****-hoo.
Yep, the ***** that sell out pro-democracy activists in China to the same
government that rolled tanks over students.
I think I'll give *****, sorry, flickr a miss. - redboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7i can think of plenty of other reasons why it *isn't* my friend as well... namely, *i* want to dictate what is / is not done with my photos. i don't particularly trust yahoo to make that call for me.
- richardtallent, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Another benefit they failed to mention is the API. All my published photos are organized on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/richardtallent/ - potentially NSFW), and I use the API to pull images on my normal web site (http://www.tallent.us/). I'm hoping print sales via partnerships with quality printers becomes an option, but for now the online hosting is pretty good. One gripe: they seriously need to rethink the navigation, their menus suck.
- ckSubs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Is there a way to get high-res photos on Flickr? It's always bothered me how they're so damn tiny... but I always thought I was just missing the option.
- effedup, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1there's a link at the top that says something like "view full size" or "view all sizes" or something like that. that bugged me too, but then i found the button.
- vmxeo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0You're missing the option. Look for the button that says "all sizes". It'll take you to a page where you can view the sizes available for that photo (if available). Here's an example: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=535809526& ... (warning, shameless self plug to one of my own flickr photos! :)
- MemoryDump, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I just wish Google would have bought Flickr instead of Yahoo. Flickr and Picasa would have made an awesome combo.
- CrankyPants, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2My problem with flickr is that people use it to dump all kinds of assy photos. Please people, show some discretion and only put your best work out there -- no need to empty your whole memory card.
- desiredusername, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Too bad 95% of the photos on that site are pure crap. Yeah, let's take pictures of mundane, everyday subjects with no emotional or thought-provoking value to begin with, (with a really nice camera nonetheless) and call it art. Give me a break.
- yfguitarist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You don't have to share your private photos, but you do have to share your favorites :(
- fuyoh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Flickr is a not only Photographer’s best friend, it's also everyone best friend.
Why? I can see a lot of website integrated with it. This is a power tool for Yahoo! - macinnesm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://pix.ie offers 500MB/month and unlimited number of photos for FREE... A much better deal!
- mp3dog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Flickr's user interface SUCKS ASS
