"-Startups."
...Aw. - canewediggit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31this one blew me away. watch this kid, because he may "disappear";
Maxthon
Maxthon has accomplished what no other browser has in China: It has found a way around the Chinese government's controls on what information is available through sites and search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN and Baidu.com. That's why Maxthon has quickly become China's second most popular browser after Internet Explorer, with 98 million downloads so far.
CEO: Chen Ming Jie
Location: Bejing, China
URL: maxthon.com
Launch: 2003 - twrife, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2431 pages ftl.
- addiggt, on 07/06/2009, -0/+8Here's another article that may interest some of you : http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/biz2/0707/gallery.web_world_06.biz2/ It's a look at the 10 most successful startups from last year's list of the world's best startups outside the U.S.
- AirRaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7What I don't get is just *how* MaxThon usage is being tolerated.
The devs'd be locked up instantly.
Or, more to the point, how it's getting round restrictions. Won't the Great Firewall extend to the DNS level? What're they doing- routing all connections through Tor and using an offshore DNS? - meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+631 startups, 31 stupid names
- MrHappy123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Invite yourself! https://joost.com/presents/gigaom-newteevee/
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'll check back later when someone posts a link to the thing on one page...
- cyclopsface, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I doesn't mention anything about getting around the government in the wikipedia article though there's this on the hompage:
Super Proxy
Supports connect to internet with HTTP, HTTPS, Socks4, Socks4a, Socks5 proxy servers, also supports proxies that requires authentication.
Maxthon Browser can switch between proxies automatically base on your Advanced Proxy Rule setting. - MrHappy123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't know any of em except for Joost
- soupir, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4More "Comments from the Eighteenth Century" after the break.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Good point. It's not entirely random though. it's from a sam 'n' max TV episode where they had to find a hamburger called the meat mcguffin.
A mcguffin is something in a film that's important to the story but it doesn't matter what it is. So like the story is based around a bank heist but it doesn't matter if it's for cash, some diamonds or a puppy. /trivia - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3He hasn't gone anywhere, and MyIE2 (now Maxthon) has been around for quite some time now. I'm surprised that not all that many Americans use it
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Why do you have to be helpful? Why can't you just digg Luis down and post a reply that insults him and insinuates that he is 13 like a normal Digger would
I hate when people try to be different. - dopesick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Are you seriously THAT dense, that I mearly stated the top 5 could do business in the US if it wasn't for the MPAA and RIAA.
- dopesick, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Did anyone notice the top 5 slots were companies offering services (video and file sharing), that gets MAJOR attention in the US? Are you still shocked the top 5 are NOT located in the US? You can thank the MPAA, and RIAA
- orlyfactor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'd like to feed them a big can of STFU 2.0.
- soupir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes. But I want you to be happy. So no.
- geekgeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Tangler made the list but our CEO picture was too boring so they put up the logo. LMAO. Have to work on that one.
http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/biz2/0707/gallery.web_world.biz2/29.html - binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -2/+4GERMAN HOT BOYS FTW
- monkeywaffles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You know.. I don't think you can have descriptions like 'Myubo already has more than 2,000 registered users' and have it fourth on the list of 'hottest startups'. Yes, users don't mean much when you are starting out, but sites designed specifically for a small country aren't likely to generate any buzz in the rest of the world... ever.
And really 'unique' site ideas like "Bezurk's travel search engine aims to provide the best prices for flights, hotels and cars in one place" just make me wonder if rebranding a run of the mill travel site with terms like 'mashup' makes it more appealing? I mean, come on, how many other sites out there are exactly like that? We've all seen the 'searching 1000s of places while we show an excessively long load screen' travel sites before. Only this one is wretched to use, and is filled with inconsistencies
Very lame list.. - spartanlover, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1great entrepeneurs! I tip my hat off to these folks, best of luck!
- AirRaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1...So basically what you can already do in Firefox with great ease?
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What a truly retarded collection of 'business' names....
If the 21st century's going to be remembered for anything it'll be stupid names for companies and people. - OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1He's not the only one who took your post that way. We aren't mind readers who can decode your ambiguous statements perfectly.
- orlyfactor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Lamest viral ad EVER.
- MrHappy123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1https://joost.com/presents/gigaom-newteevee/
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2That it was built on IE is a huge plus.
- crbaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1comment of the day
- daines88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Is it bad that I've only heard of one of these? (Joost)
- karthickdoss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2This is the lamest list ever about startups. Buried.
- karthickdoss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Go to inviteshare.com . u can get invitations for variety of beta stuffs.
- ClayDragon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Bliin? Wasn't that the color Kelly Bundy invented?
- tnatharik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The word hottest doesn not seem to go with startup. It goes with ....
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -11/+11I call Bull$hit as I see 2 pictures of women and they don't know how to use technology. Buried as Inaccurate.
- Bebc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0the founder of babytree.com is also the founder of eachnet.com, a chinese eBay. Actually, eachnet was bought by eBay later
- darkhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I like the clones. What is the point of this?
- elstevo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0eDushi.com.... now there's a fun pronunciation.
- aforonda, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1zzz the bay area alone crushes this list.
- greymerlion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0And to monkeywaffles, Bezurk is primarily an Asia travel search engine, and a lot of its partners are Asian online travel agencies which don't always have the pretty API's and slick systems of their US and European counterparts, hence they are treading some "new ground".
Interesting absolutely nothing on the list appeals to you, several of the big boys out there right now are concepts most people wouldn't have given two shakes about a couple years ago. Easy to be a troll. - sockettrousers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I don't understand how that is relevant to anything.
- redwire, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Its done because so many stories are "the worlds hottest start-ups" then include 9 US companies then 1 or 2 random token sites from elsewhere that many non-US people don't bother to read it because all they are thinking is "AMERICA IS NOT THE WORLD FFS!".
- harshbarj, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3How can they call this "the worlds hottest startups" and exclude the USA? Sure they included "excluding the us" but that's like saying company B is the leader (excluding the market leader company A). Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see such a list from non-USA sites but the title needs some work.
- soupir, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1You said it, meatmcguffin. Er wait.
- purrp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1They forgot one: the up-and-coming http://www.clutterme.com, from Toronto :p
Good to see success stories from outside the Bay area. Stumbleupon ($75million) also got started in Canada (Calgary). - pak314, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Perhaps his "investors" are the chinese government. The best way to catch potential troublemakers.
- stockjones, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Im glad they mention Maxthon because its features are pretty awesome. I know some would complain because it really runs on top of IE and thats why they havent given it a try, but it has features that blow all other browsers away including FF and Opera. Microsoft would be smart to take some clues or assistance from Maxthon for the next iteration of IE.
- twrife, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1There are plenty of places where you can get an invitation. Google is your friend.
- Luis911, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Hey, can someone please invite me to Joost if possible. My email is Luis911 (at) mac.com Thanks in advanced
- Smight, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0ummmm... the top 31 are not in the U.S.
Maybe it has something to do with that "non-U.S. sites to watch" disclaimer before the list? -
