I agree. Hybrids don't do enough to eliminate the gas fuel used. It's a start, but we need to rely on something else completely like a hydrogen fuel based car. - rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Hybrids are just stupid.

Actually, hybrids are for people who want to drive a car 40+ mpg so they won't have to sell their children for gas every week. - Saville, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Doesn't the vette skip 2nd and 3rd gear on acceleration and drive in a generally high gear to get that gas mileage? I think what Lexus is going for here is a fast car that's going to get those twenties. Your vette isn't going to do that :-"
Only under very low acceleration (under 21%) and a bunch if other factors. Its called Skip Shift, I even do it in my truck. So the Vette will still be a fast car. And as for the Lexus, anything better than the gas mileage we are getting right now is a good step! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Hybrids are just more of the same from an auto industry that can't see the road from all the reflectors.
They are totally unwilling to change, and a hybrid is what they come up with because they are stuck in their little world view.
Moving to using all electric motors to drive the wheels, then looking at small turbines (one moving part, more efficent) or fuel cells etc. to produce the electricty to drive the wheels thats the direction we need to go in...not a way to KEEP using the inefficent engine we have today which is modeled after the steam engine for goodness sake.
Not to mention that using batteries is its own environmental disaster waiting to happen. - alpha7q, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*shrugs*

- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a big difference between "it's a start" and "just stupid." I'm sure you guys realize this but fuel consumption really hasn't changed much since the '50s. Sure, we probably hit a little peak between the '70s and '80s with all the fuel scares. I know we have little Japanese cars but all the SUVs offset them. This is the first major change that I'm aware of. So it's much better than just a first step. And it's the idea that progress is happening despite the best efforts of gigantic corporate institutions like GM and Exxon to stymie it. Believe it or not, capitalism doesn't always help progress.
Incidentally, I bet if that vette gets good gas mileage on the highway it clunks down when you're in city driving, and the hybrid technology is intended to do the most for city driving. If you average it out, the Corvette will probably have something like 15 or 20 mpg. Still, I agree, it starts to pose questions when you're throwing the hybrid on vehicles not really designed with consumption in mind. Maybe hybrid monster trucks and funny cars are coming to a car pull near you... - elusive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yes, engineering has to do with technology.
fyi, comments like that tend to be more annoying than constructive. - floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GS's are gorgeous. My GS300 has a 220 horse power, I think if they kept the new Lexus down to 200 or even 300, they could have gotten a significantly better mileage. GS has always been pitched as a performance car, however, so it makes sense in a way.

Not to mention that "gasoline" is not the best fuel to use. Gasoline is used today because of its POWER, there are other fuels you can develop from oil that would give better milage per barrel and create less waste if you started to care more about efficency than being able to go from 0-60 in 5 seconds. - ziggystardust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why pay for Hybrid technology if the MPG are the same if not worse than non hybrids. The car consumes like a non-hybrid. Lexus is trying to get in the "Hybrid" tent for marketing purposes only. Obviously not to make a difference.
- sspooner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How silly. I have a 360hp heavily modified Porsche 911 Carrera (996 C2).
I get over 30 mpg (US gallon) on the freeway at 70mph. At 55mph on backroads I get over 35mpg.
At 175mph I get 17mpg.
:-)
So, exactly how BAD is a regular Lexus ? - JargonScott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I heard a great quote on a local news show the other day about gas prices. While 3 or 4 people gave the "oh, what will we do?!?" type answers, this 5th person said "it's only like $30 a week difference to me. If I was that strapped I wouldn't be driving in the 1st place."
I pointed out to a lady at work that if she quit smoking 1 pack a day, it would completely negate the gas price rise. $30 x 52 = $1560, while $5 (avg.) x 365 = $1825.
I wish a trip to the movies was still $2, or a can soda was still $.25. I don't think those will ever come back either. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0stupid. 30+ mpg. pathetic. throw out the power and go for all out energy conservation. nobody needs 300hp. retarded.
- socket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a dirty trick the industry is pulling on people with these new hybrids. Just like almost all automotive technology the gains in performance are being put towards delivering more POWER, and not more fuel economy. But times are changing very quickly. In the next couple of years the industry will be forced to change that behavior. Oil is a finite resource which we're pull out of the earth at break neck speeds. Take a guess what happens when it runs out... =)
- heatpackrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if by "30+" they mean "28", then yes.

I'm with the poster... Doesn't seem like enough of a fuel consumption savings for being a hybrid. - WorldBuilder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Hybrids are just stupid.

Then what's your suggestion, smartass?
I hate negative people like you who make a blatantly flaming comment then don't back it up with anyhing. Your entire statement should automatically be stricken for a complete lack of having anything remotely constructive in it. Grow a brain, get an education of some sort, then return to pose something resembling intelligence. - marmanold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I completely thought the +hp stood for Hewlett Packard. You know, the the iPod+HP. I seriously thought HP had dropped Apple to partner with Lexus for a car with some sort of HP computer inside. Needless to say I was disappoint when I found out HP stood for Horse Power. :(
