- onederwall, on 06/28/2009, -0/+14Here are a few more apps that take advantage of this technology:

Wikitude- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpaJBu4BEuA&eur ... - onederwall, on 06/28/2009, -1/+13I'm looking forward to seeing how software developers take advantage of these capabilities. The hardware on these phones supports it and I'm sure many of you would love to see how this technology plays out.
Imagine going out with a couple of friends, popping open your phone, and checking out reviews of restaurants around you. Then, taking your phone out again and finding out what's worth checking out in your vicinity- be it a hot new nightclub/bar, an awesome view/landmark, or other interesting "thing to do" that's specific to the locale.
Better yet, image a search engine like application that takes advantage of this type of technology. Are you looking for a nearby copy center or print shop? Pop open your phone, quickly enter "kinkos" as your keyword, and voila- instant distance based results with other useful accompanying information. - yocouchdigga, on 06/28/2009, -1/+9Another reason to get a phone with Android. :D
- Emera, on 06/28/2009, -0/+7Good Anime based-on Augmented Reality:

Now, where is my RTS games that uses AR? - Benvic1, on 06/28/2009, -0/+6Layar-type technology will definitely be huge. My mind boggles over the potential legal and social consequences of wide-scale implementation of it. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
- yocouchdigga, on 06/28/2009, -0/+5do you happen to have a brother (in dire need of my assistance) that's a prince in Nigeria?
- mathyu21, on 06/28/2009, -0/+5another step towards cyborg... dugg
- Piha, on 06/28/2009, -1/+6Clearly the cellphone to human graphical interface is the limation here.
What we really need is some kinda perfect resolution brain stem interface ala Matrix. Although lets just make sure we design them to be 'hot-unpluggable' so we don't ***** ourselves up if we unplug or switch it off ala Matrix. - PFS1, on 06/28/2009, -1/+6"It's sort of like being Batman in Dark Knight, when he used information from cell phones to get a map of what was happening in the a building two floors down from where he was."
It's absolutely nothing like that. - vorda, on 06/28/2009, -0/+5Good security thinking. Also let's not plug anything directly into our spine please. It sounds rather painful. And please let's not take Microsoft's offer for building a GUI for this project, please. Or the blue screen of death will become a quite literal thing.
- RobotBuddha, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4I have to agree with Spoonmeister. I think it's mainly the form factor that's the limitation. I'm very much a booster of augmented reality, and even I don't like the idea of it being tethered to something hand held. I think glasses would be an ok. Though I'd prefer something like contacts. Still, the latter's an ungodly long way off so I'm just hoping for glasses that are comfortable, small, and don't make me look like a huge dork.
- zephc, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4I hope you weren't talking about Vernor Vinge, author and former professor of mathematics at San Diego State University. It's worth noting that AR tech has been impossible or close to until relatively recently, and there are still plenty of technical hurdles to bring it to the masses, most notably for things like smart phones (and whatever evolves from those as tech advances)
- barryiggins, on 06/28/2009, -0/+417series hangbag and adiads shoes?! NO WAI!!!
- UrineEngineer, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3If you really wanted to think about it... the iPhone isn't exactly a Core i7 with 12GB DDR3 RAM and 3 GeForce GTX 295s in SLI. What exactly were you expecting?
- vorda, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3"These wearable computers allow people to do things like google information straight into their eyeballs while chatting on the street corner..."
I can only imagine all those guys with boners walking down the street. - smitas, on 06/28/2009, -1/+4Wow!
- Spoomeister, on 06/28/2009, -1/+4Imagine not having a phone in these examples.
You simply roll your eyes back a bit, look like you're meditating or something for a second, and then you come back with the answer. Or, the device is activated by a pre-selected gesture; e.g. you put your thumb and 2 fingers to your chin like you're saying "hmm...", and the implanted tech goes to work. No one else sees a phone or any other device on you.
The hardware is secondary. Augmented technologies will take off when the devices and form factors evolve again one or two more times. - shade45, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2Change the world.
- cJw314, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3I've been waiting for this for a long time ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Light ) but these videos hardly do AR justice. 10 fps? Is that even a proof of concept build that you would want to brag about?
- Gareth321, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2Hi,friend
We don't take kinda to spam here. How about you ***** off and die.
Sincerely
Gareth - gameyharp, on 06/28/2009, -2/+4Do want. Not going to change the world though.
- not1butme, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2Don't forget Eden of the East
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eden_of_the_East - nateabel, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3Oooh, Deus Ex here we come!
- dexx4d, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2This stuff's interesting. How about some more business-centric applications:
A telecoms technician and holds up their phone looking at a house - it overlays the connection information, showing them relevant troubleshooting statistics pulled from the provisioning centre.
Or an internet tech who points his phone at your newly-installed high-speed modem and shows you the data flowing in/out of it; he presses a button and it records the stats indicating that it worked before he left the job site.
Or a wire tester that talks to the phone and overlays whether or not the electrical cable the electrician is looking at has juice flowing through it. - wakingrufus, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2Im ok with some overlay display goggles
- RobotBuddha, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2I love dennu coil. A little too kiddy seeming on the surface for me to really be comfortable suggesting it to friends, but it's easily one of the best things I've ever seen on my tv.
- Shazbuckle, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2No one asked him to do what??
- mmurch03, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1This has been around for a while, but it's a lot of fun and worth checking out if you dig AR games. http://www.toyspring.com/arcade/
- zankin, on 08/19/2009, -0/+1Boobies aren't first on the "augmentation list" they're usually second, trust me, this technology will lead to mammoth mammarial innovation.
- themastersb, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1Assassin's Creed 2 teaser website used the Fantasy overlay
- Drizzit, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1I can do all this on my iPhone already.. not sure why this is big news, even other phones have this capability with the right applications installed.
- rova, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1I'm not sure that these particular apps will be the big breakthrough that augmented reality will bring - but eventually I do believe it will change the world.
- cJw314, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Maybe waiting a generation before bothering to sell the app?
- NikoKun, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1Augmented reality technologies are already changing the world. This is far more useful than either the Segway or Video phone. -_-
This is a whole new level in information, and interaction. And just like how the Internet was a huge sucess because of information access, if this finds it's way into common place applications, it will revolutionize the level of information people have at their fingertips. - RobotBuddha, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1It's kinda like a balloon.....and then....something bad happens?
- bugeye999, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1So I can play WoW at the park, and when someone steals an item, instead of shouting at them about what I would do if I met them for real I can punch them in the face?
- daxxer, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1Sure why not?
- viper37, on 06/28/2009, -0/+0I need your clothes, your boots, and your motorcycle.
- ktags, on 06/28/2009, -0/+0ar toolkit has been around for some time. we used it in college and went as far to implement it on a palm pilot. but again with screens so small the uses are limited
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -1/+1I'm ambivalent: One one hand it seems really cool, on the other, it seems like an unnecessary distraction. I'm not sure if I want to be plugged in 24-7.
- xer0five, on 06/28/2009, -2/+2"psychedelic flowers growing out of a hash bar"! =O
dugg - esb82, on 06/28/2009, -0/+0Wearable computers seem to offer the most versatile platform for AR, which I believe will replace mobile phones anyway. It's hard to get excited about AR until I see some innovation in that direction.
- skelooth, on 06/28/2009, -0/+0If Layar "Changes the world" in any significant way, I will be the first one to apologize. Until then, sensationalism.
- Enthalpic0, on 06/29/2009, -0/+0Why don't they just insert tiny chips into our bloodstreams when we are born then we can google with our visual imagination??
- Enthalpic0, on 06/29/2009, -0/+0I think they should just implant google into our minds through an injection of nanoprocessors
- UrineEngineer, on 06/28/2009, -1/+0And you'll never have to.
- ASFx, on 06/28/2009, -4/+2I saw "augmented" and was hoping for boobies :(
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -5/+3No one asked you to.
