- didymus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Imagine having the ability to take this sort of photo with a point and click camera... given the pace of technological improvements over the past years it is not unthinkable.
There could be privacy implications though I suppose (Imagine taking a photo of a city - you'd be able to look through each window....) - ShaolinTiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It's stitched together, it was taken with a Canon 20D 50mm prime lens and is effectively 222mp.
- boomerxl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9222 megapixels.....all of them white. Bookmarked ...if his server ever gets back up.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19http://duggmirror.com
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8... I don't think I'll ever get over Macho Grande.
- spotty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8shoot, the cost of a swarm of diggers viewing a 222 MP image in one hour cant be cheap.
- wonginator1221, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12duggmirror is working slightly faster
http://www.duggmirror.com/technology/222_megapixel_image_of_Machu_Picchu_in_Peru./ - EssPii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Im guessing (hoping) that this is stitched together from many smaller images, because the amount of detail is insane. Its hard to tell since there are no people (the I have found yet) or moving things, so everything could stitch together perfectly without cutting anything off (like the last one I remember, the new york city street with half cars, half buses and half people!
Edit: Ypu it is stitched, he has a tutorial on his site.
http://esspeaphotography.blogspot.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Please tell me that this damn thing isn't only available in a ***** flash viewer thing!
For christs sake, most ppl ( at least the tech savy crowd who come here) would probably prefer a honking great jpeg so we can actually do something with the image instead of just look at it in a tiny flash window surrounded by wasted space. I don't care that it takes 1Gb to display, I want the pic! - Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Big Digg.. this is the type of thing more people need to be doing for the places few people get to travel to and see... a trip to Machu is still on my list, but until then this image is definatly the closest thing short of bieng there... spent like 20min on this thing and still more to see
And What is with the negative diggs on the guy nice enough to post the mirror since the site bombed already! - EssPii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah seriously. I want to download HIS copywritten image using up HIS bandwidth so I can do whatever I want to it without HIS permission.
He is making it into a smaller wallpaper, just grab that. - chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6it's likely that lenses will become the bottleneck very soon, rather than the sensor.
there comes a point where increasing the resolution of a 35mm sensor will only serve to show more imperfections in the light transmitted through the lens. in other words, you won't get any more detail at 200mp than you would at 20mp due to limitations in the physical characteristics of the glass.
this can be solved by moving to a larger sensor size, but that brings other problems.. - canadiense, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nice photo, but nothing beats being there in person. Hiking the Inca Trail for a few days and finally reaching Machu Picchu is a terrific experience. When you're that high in the air, the sky is crystal clear almost every day.
Log off your computer, book a flight to Lima, go out and buy a backpack, and take off. South Americans are IMHO the most friendly, genuine and honest people in the world. Spend some time with them on their turf, and you'll very quickly make some great friends. There are some excellent adventures to be had on that continent - 3 six-month backpacking trips and I've determined my only real regret in life is NOT spending more time traveling, and less time with my "career". - drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 nice all the mirrors and original sites are down. How disappointing, yet it must be pretty good if it eats up that much bandwidth.
- gimlik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's back up.
AMAZING PHOTO!!!!!!! - AuntCindyPants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg Killed it.
- EssPii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3When you are zoomed in fully, look to the top left and check out what % of the image it is. Its probably around or even less than 1%. Zoom into 1% the image size on your 1DsII and tell me how good it looks.
- JiMiThInG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't like that its in a crappy .swf format. Anyone know a way to rip it to a simple jgp or something?
- davidepaula, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yesssssssss!!!
Another site killed by digg :) - t35t0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2none of the mirrors work properly
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Indeed, Lenses are a big problem, but also are the sensors themselves. Only some of the much higher end digital cameras will you find even full 35mm sensors - The Canon Rebel XT is only a 28MM sensor. But, 28mm is damned huge compared to the 1/4" sensors used in many, many point'n'shoot pocket cameras. The bigger the sensor, the more light can reach it, and the same is true with the lenses themselves. You simply cannot get ultra high resolution photographs from a little tiny 1/2" lense. Not enough light can get in, and the manufacturing processes required to produce these lenses would have to be so good that the costs would be sky high.
That's not to say you can't take damned good pictures with these smaller cameras. My sister has a 4MP Kodak Easyshare camera, and most of the pictures come out really nice. - alej744, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DIGG EFFECT!!!!!
GRRR AAAGGHHHHJHH!!!! - techmonkey4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you notice the people sitting on one of the upperleft-most walls?
- GabeDiaz, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1man I really wish this was still up to be seen.
my family is from Peru and I've only been able to view the pictures and video that my sister has brought back from her visit. my dad always says one day he will "visit" but that has been his story since I was 10.
one day I'd like to go and see Machu Picchu for myself, hopefully before I'm 30 so I can cross it off my list of things to do.
hopefull this will come back soon so other can at least see the beauty that places around the world have to offer. - EssPii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, those were the only ones could find, apparently there are four though (that someone in the comments saw).
- Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This reminds me of another high high high resolution photo that was imbedded in a flash viewer. It was a s shot of some city from the top of a building, and it was crazy the things you could find given enough time to find them. Notable objects were a big church (i think) and a yellow crane on the horizon. You could actually read the name of the building company on the side of crane.People everywhere doing normal/odd stuff. Anyone remember where that image was from ?
- kcornwell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Google earth has this image that is like huge!!! you can see the whole planet and zoom all the way in and see people.
- winnopeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The digg effect is a wonderful thing.
- sirchadlington, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1duggmirror doesnt seem to work either. It loads the html page, but the photo seems to be embedded in a flash movie which never loads...
- troon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lenses are already the bottleneck, especially at the cheap end. I have a Minolta DiMAGE A1 5MP "prosumer" camera, with Minolta's well-loved 28-200mm (equiv) zoom lens. The DiMAGE A2 is 8MP, and it seems the lens's true resolution is somewhere in the middle.
I know this lens isn't high-end state of the art, but it's a hefty chunk of glass that probably outperforms virtually all the compact P+S cameras out there. - HitLines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@sirchadlington
This is because the account has been temporarily disabled. If someone was able to save it, I can provide a good mirror.
http://www.aguntherphotography.com/zoomify/zoomifyViewer.swf - PrplHaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, update this when the link works, or the image can be found somewhere else, this sounds tight!
- levyjl1988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wally in England, we call him Waldo, where's Waldo, BTW this is an amazing picture, took me like 10 min to see everything... Dugg!
- j0ew00ds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sounds purty, but its broken.
- IbnDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0still broke
- rockefeller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or better yet, get a field service engineering job with a company who has international customers. Then you don't have to put your "career" on hold just to get to travel. This way, the company pays you to travel. When you finish the work you have to do there, take a few days off and explore the city.
The beauty of it is, typically companies pay a premium to get people to travel because most people in the US don't want to. So you make huge amounts of cash working in foreign cities making huge amounts of money having a great time.
But I would recommend Asia, just for the golden ***** syndrome. - 5ShotsOfJager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0About the ability to get this much information out of a point and shoot camera, it probably wont happen any time soon since there's not much most people would want to do with the extra pixels ? No one is printing pictures of their cats uploaded to flickr on A0 paper yet. Being able to take a picture that size in a single shot would be usefull mainly to pro who need the huge quality.
- razishaban, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2shame digg kills everything it touches... maybe digg should have its own mirror, so that we can view it all from digg.com
- andreytcho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Should have posted it somewhere like picasaweb no bw restrictions ( at least i think it doesn't have any). Someone have it in other place ?
- unabonger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not working :(
- mindsocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a 230 megapixel image of Tokyo taken with a Canon 20D - 84x8megapixel images stitched together. I can't access the link right now, but I suspect this is exactly how the dugg image was taken, given that a 111 megapixel CCD only just went commercial.
- andre75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No it was a 70-200mm Canon f/4 L USM Lens @ 100mm. Otherwise you are correct, I stitched it.
Due to the stitching, the 100mm will appear like a wide angle with very shallow depth of field. - leafeater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can anyone please give an alternative link or temporarily host the file somewhere else?
- maradong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd second a call for a JPG. Unfortunately though, I do not believe there is one. Ah well. :(
- Sadiq786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, along with allot of other sites
- simonmcc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yip, could we try to keep these things quiet ;)
- icontacked, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i missed it!
