#1 Have a ton of friends sit at work all day and watch for you to submit articles
#2 Use the word "Amazing in the title"
#3 Make sure it's a list (ie. Top 10...) People are dumb and need things in a list (like this)
#4 End with an exclamation point! - Oatmeal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Letting someone else submit it can often screw things up though if they write a bad description. I know if I write an article that has the potential to be on digg I'll try and post if first so I have control over the title and content of the entry.
- SuperRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11From the Digg FAQ (http://digg.com/faq) ...
"17. Are blog posts okay to submit as stories on digg?
Blog stories are fine as long as the story is not plagiarized. However, if any URL within digg is consistently flagged as SPAM by the digg community, that URL will be blocked from submission. See a definition of plagiarism."
Don't blame blogs. Blame the blogger. - SuperRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'd rather digg my own post and let everyone know I dugg it than to have someone digging posts under a fake account just to add "credibility".
The way I see it, I add the story to the queue, you decide if it's digg-worthy. What does it really matter who submitted it in the first place? Are I "digg-whoring" by adding a link on my site to submit to digg anyway, so shouldn't I just cut right to the chase?
Seriously, all the people that are so confused about what's "acceptable to the community" make me giggle. It's all semantics. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Dugg for being one intelligent list.
But one guy I write content for on the side is a real upstream swimmer. He actually wants to find out what everybody else is doing, then have me do the opposite. It made sense when he explained it to me about keyword popularity.
On my own personal blog, I have discussed niche interests like the game nethack or ASCII art, and not a day goes by that I don't see 30 searches come in for those two topics alone. They aren't big, so there's no competition for them. Cornering a bunch of niche topics (the site damninteresting.com comes to mind) can get you more readers than trying to be the first site that pops up on Google for the power keywords.
But the heaviest Zen I've found is to simply write what interests myself. The motto I have is "If it wasn't fun for you to write, it won't be fun for others to read." - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not a bad list. I was all ready to roll my eyes when I saw the title -- cause I've seen this kind of thing a thousand times before -- but the author actually managed to say a thing or two that hasn't been said before.
- RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I shiver when I see things like this, and stuff SEO related. The mighty Internet Gods know I've been trying hard to get "dugged," found, captured, etc., for a shot at some mass appeal ... the thing is, if you don't "digg" yourself, who else will?
That's the beauty of Digg, Newsvine, and other social news/bookmarking/networking sites. It's an opportunity to have a voice, be discovered, etc. I wouldn't consider the user's submission spam, as he is contributing content -- who cares if it's his own?
So, on to the list I go, as I'm sure I'll learn a thing or two ... - kingp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8what about "21 ways to improve Digg submission traffic"????
- randfish, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10That was my reason for "self-digging," too. The last few times we've had an article on here, the title and description have been subpar, so it's worth it from my perspective to write the content personally. That's to say that your submission wouldn't have been great, Mijack - just that not everyone who Diggs is a great writer :)
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i think you did digg it
http://digg.com/users/mjjack/dugg - tomi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What the ***** is it with all of these off-topic 'how to get dugg on digg' comments? I thought it was a good article, even though it was from a blog (who cares? as long as it's quality).
*shakes head* - thebassman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Great list... I've gotta print it out and stick in next to my monitor when I blog.
- JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Here are the steps I've learned from Digg:
1) Pretend to be friends with other people on Digg, form a mutual voting bloc.
2) Make a headline with a ***** of superlatives. Copy someone else's interesting headline if necessary, just be sure your voting bloc sees yours first to bring it to the fore earlier.
2a) Get a few people in the bloc to make generic comments which you're certain most people will agree with early on. This will get them up to +40 diggs once the story breaks as front page news.
3) Instead of linking to the story, link to your blog which *then* leads to the story. Ensure that your blog entry adds absolutely no academic/informative value whatsoever, unless you count Google AdSense or interstitial ads as value.
I think that about covers it. - roadies, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@billyboobs34: +lame for thinking blogs are just for posting pictures of your cat.
What does it really matter if it is a blog post? Blogs are simply publishing engines. Would all you digg pussies shutup if this same content was written in plain HTML, or a CMS like Joomla or Drupal?
Rand wrote an article, using his own words and his own ideas. He WROTE IT. He's not linking to a video, he's not linking to a press release, he's not linking to another blog. This is HIS content. So shut up just because it was posted his content in a blog post.
Geez, I'm getting sick of all the whining here. Go back to myspace already! - randfish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Excellent ideas, there - I'll certainly pay attention to those in the future. I particularly like a submit to Digg button that includes the title, so that, at the least, they remain objective and accurate.
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Something that's helped Digg users in the past:
-Make a blog post on either; "10 Reasons Why Mac OS is godlike LOL" or; "10 Reasons why Windows is the worst OS ever LOL".
-Submit to Digg
-????
-Traffic. - RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Self-submission is certainly okay in the community, as I've heard it direct from the horses mouth ...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Some of the items on this list goes for all websites; definately was interesting to read. Most of all, I learned a little.
- sublimethinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I visited ronaldlewis.com because you somehow compelled me with your post. All's I'm gonna say is "Holy *****, you write long posts!". Also, the dugg article is correct -- it's very sad seeing posts with 0 comments like that.
- tom6a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And mjjack is right, this would have been submitted by someone else quick. I was in the process of submitting when I found out it was already posted...I was the 6th person to digg this. It looks like mjjack was the 12th or so in his attempt to submit. With a blog as popular as yours Rand you do have to be quick on the trigger if you want to control the digg submission.
- krellor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm just glad it wasn't 21 ways to whore your blog out like some sites have suggested. I am very tired of pointless self serving blog plugs. This one actually tells you to build a nice environment, rathen than whoring yourself on social networking sites.
- edyst3, on 12/08/2008, -0/+1It's very useful tips to improve traffics. Thanks for sharing with us.
As you said that link bait process is trial and error. You mean that we should submit our own post on some social bookmarking site? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why this is important is this. Unique and important content is getting buried. For instance my site broke the iTV Apple device a month before it was released or rumored. I posted on digg.com and got nothing, I shrugged my shoulders and moved on. This week I posted a story with details on iPhone, that were gasp accurate. I got a whole 10 diggs. Why? Because 100 other people posted fake pictures and garbage.
So the real content needs to find a way to rise above the spam, even if it has to fight fire with fire. - allonline, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Best Practice for Small Business - Persuasive Copywriting SEO . click to continue http://www.copywritingtip.com/ - tom6a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ouch. Is that directed at me? I'm a lazy digger most of the time. 9 times out of 10 I'll cut and paste the blog title and then cut and paste part of the blog for the description.
I'm a big SEOmoz fan and probably submit more SEOmoz digg entries than anyone who doesn't work there. Better work on my descriptions! - findhostcoupons, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1Thanks for useful recommendations we will try to apply them for our new blog and will check if they really work!

http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=banish - randfish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Man, you're picky... OK - next time, 25 items on how to reduce potential criticism from Diggers in the Digg post comments. Betcha a shiny nickel it gets Dugg :)
- wonderwealth, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1Great list. I'll defintely have to mull over these points for my blog.
- FelleSE, on 02/01/2008, -0/+0Great list you got there.
Thanks for the effort, really! - dannysullivan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Real men do lists of 25 items. If you can't do 25, don't bother. Courtesy Digg only, Rand :)
- ganeshkb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Make your blog simple but informative. Please make sure there is SPAM that has been posted to your blog. Please keep it simple and sweet always, reply to people who comment on your blog.
Take care

http://dexter-laboratory.blogspot.com/ - binarypower, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Why use "tactics" to drive people to your site... thats semi-spamming... why not just deliver great content? Word of mouth (or "link from site") traffic is much better than "what did i click on" type traffic.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Great post as usual Rand. I often wonder how you're able to come up with such copius content :)
- AngryBacon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Here's another.
XGL+Compiz+Ubuntu howto! - dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That 14 yr old blogger that keeps submitting annoying lists could learn something from #18..
- howidid, on 06/30/2008, -0/+0Awesome post. Definitely worth bookmarking.
- RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Actually, I rarely try to promote my own blog, but other interests instead ... the blog is just that, something for me to share my opinions, etc. The entry you're referring to is quite long, and in fact, it's the longest one to date, and a short entry wouldn't do the subject justice.
The things I'm working to draw attention to, are like diamonds in a crack ... it's only a matter of time before things "take off." Regardless, I'm happy with the progress of things. - theanimeblog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0wortwhile article - great tips!
- alones76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Your post is very useful for me. thanks~
- ourmonmouth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Good content that is helpful, interesting and of value to the community should be rewarded with traffic. Can it be that simple?

- dubaiweb, on 11/24/2008, -0/+0OK I googled how to improve traffic to my blog and you came up in the first ten. BUT the make sures and the do this is great but wouldn't you wanna explain HOW TO such as the RSS statement. Folks just getting started are clueless. But thanks for getting it going.
