- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -0/+90Editor's Note: I don't think we need the Editor's Note
- Scotty87, on 08/22/2008, -2/+84This list kinda sucks
- crgnetworks, on 08/22/2008, -0/+66The "Editor comment" sucks even worse!
- otis12, on 08/22/2008, -0/+58Went to Japan to use their 40Mbps line to download the internet.
- nypix, on 08/22/2008, -7/+62***** you, 2 of my friends were killed for their wi-fi connection.
- 4rp4n3t, on 08/22/2008, -1/+51For a PC World article, the editor comes across as a clueless *****.
- ssaxusggid, on 08/22/2008, -1/+44I once traded a Klondike Bar for Wi-Fi.
- umbrellainabin, on 08/22/2008, -4/+45i get what your saying but your english kinda sucks dude
- RockBandit, on 08/22/2008, -0/+35Hah, I've definitely done my share of crazy things to get a wi-fi connection. Standing in the snow on our balcony with a laptop, as well as using a fishing pole in an apartment to try and extend the reach of our crappy USB antenna out the window.
- Hello1024, on 08/22/2008, -0/+34One interesting thing to know:
Any of those services that offer "pay as you go" wifi, "free wifi when you buy a drink" or a voucher system are fatally flawed security-wise.
If you want free access to one of them, log onto the network and stick your card into monitor mode. Find packets from another user. Set the MAC and IP address of your system to be the same as their system and use an IPtables rule to prevent your system sending TCP RST's to their packets. Now just browse the web.
How it works:
Since both systems on the network have the same MAC and IP, both systems look like one to the security system. That means since they are logged on and have access, so do you. Usually a network wouldn't function with two systems with the same MAC and IP address, but in this case there is no problem since in 99% of cases when your system receives a reply to a packet sent by the other system it will discard it, since there will be no open active tcp or udp socket. - linuxtraveler, on 08/22/2008, -2/+34I had once hack the netgear router of an hotel. Actually the login/pass for administration page was the default one (admin/password).
Since then. I have a copy a the webpage with all default login/pass of router in local on my laptop. - Hello1024, on 08/22/2008, -0/+28Far more relevant:

- gasoline, on 08/22/2008, -0/+25I recently visited a prison where cellphones are allowed in the minimum-security section. The reception was so weak that some prisoners climbed a tree to get better signal. They looked like monkeys.
- jesperhh, on 08/22/2008, -1/+24first time i actually enjoyed "***** you, 2 of my friends were killed for x"
- zip000, on 08/22/2008, -0/+23or you could fork out a dollar or so for their cheapest item.
- Skahara, on 08/22/2008, -0/+22My dick is a Wi-Fi antenna. Do you want free Internet?
- CalcProgrammer1, on 08/22/2008, -1/+21I've walked around with my PDA back and forth around buildings while looking like a total idiot trying to get a connection. One time, my dad and I drove around stopping in front of each hotel that said "Wireless Internet Here" and checking to see if they had an open connection...we were in the process of selling our house, and my dad e-mailed an important document to the real estate person from a parked car out front of a Super 8 motel. That's about the craziest WiFi finding experience I've had.
- cawfee, on 08/22/2008, -1/+21 "Had to climb on my mother's roof once. It was so fun. I actually saw a naked neighbor girl."
I wasn't aware corporations employed kids in their puberty as remote employees. - MrMysterious, on 08/22/2008, -0/+19Pay $50 a month to have tethering for your Sprint phone only to use it about once a month.

Editor's Note: *insert annoying, unnecessary comment* - zwaldowski, on 08/22/2008, -0/+19Every time I go to a restaurant that has free WiFi (talking local businesses, not chains), I upgrade the routers' firmware (it's almost always a LinkSys router) and switch them to OpenDNS.
- GiJoeBob, on 08/22/2008, -3/+21Here are the default admin names and passwords to several hundred routers-
http://www.phenoelit-us.org/dpl/dpl.html - cquilliam, on 08/22/2008, -0/+17Remotely connected to a neighbor's linksys router, upgraded their firmware to dd-wrt, set it up for WDS network with my own router, then had a stable wireless and wired connection for my house. This lasted for about 4 months until I finally shelled out the cash for my own net connection. Of course, this was completely insecure, but those are the chances you take.
- tfogarty, on 08/22/2008, -0/+16While I had dial-up every time I wanted to get a software patch that was over 20MB, I would walk half a mile to get to a neighbors house which had a broadband Wi-Fi connection which their router said I could use, thankfully. ^_^
- inactive, on 08/22/2008, -0/+16*****, that's like the ultimate and meaningless geek quest I've heard.
- 5xSTUN, on 08/22/2008, -0/+15They have Google on the internet machine now?
- Eezyville, on 08/22/2008, -0/+15*head explodes*
- potisreallygood, on 08/22/2008, -5/+19Ever sucked dick for wifi?
- Hello1024, on 08/22/2008, -1/+14is there a fully automated wep hacking tool yet? I mean one where you just have an icon on the desktop that says "find me internet access" and it will automatically try to find open or insecure netwoirks, hack them if necessary, do a bandwidth test on them, and connect you to the fastest hackable network ready to browse the web.
- SEJeff, on 08/22/2008, -2/+15No, because if you can't figure out how to do it with the zillion howto articles on the internet, you don't deserve free internet.
I've hacked wep with livecds before in a pinch. It really isn't that hard to use kismet and aircrack-ng...
Yes people that means use Linux. - censorshipwreck, on 08/22/2008, -2/+15Ooooo, looks like someone figured out how to use the Google on the internet machine!
- Hello1024, on 08/22/2008, -0/+13Thats pretty harsh, but 5 stars for ingenuity
- sleepydumbdude, on 08/22/2008, -0/+12I live across the street from a public school with an unsecure connection. I pay for my internet but download all my music from another laptop connected to them. Its one of the reasons I considered when I signed another lease for the place. Been for at least 20 months.
- airforceteacher, on 08/22/2008, -1/+12In Reno?
- mccartyba, on 08/22/2008, -0/+11That's a disgrace... The tech people at that school must be idiots. Good job for making use of it, though.
