- Kamael, on 01/05/2008, -1/+26A standard form factor that would allow you to change the case, mainboard, etc, like a desktop pc would be awesome...
- zachshmack, on 01/05/2008, -1/+20Perhaps the number of people who build/upgrade their own desktops is increasing as well...
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -1/+19No thanks, i prefer to put my full atx case in my lap
- wukillabee, on 01/05/2008, -3/+20i still prefer a desktop
- fartbuttes, on 01/05/2008, -3/+17No, it doesn't make sense for almost everyone. In fact a lot of people who have laptops have no use for them in my experience. Portability is pretty much the only reason to own a laptop - why would i want a crappy keyboard and inferior screen with lesser prospects of upgrading? whatever.
- Gaufre, on 01/05/2008, -2/+12it makes sense, the processors and hard drives have finally reached a point that makes sense for almost everyone on the computer spectrum
- oMeSSiaHo, on 01/05/2008, -0/+9Three years ago I sold desktops at about a 4:1 ratio to laptops. Last year I sold them at about a 1:3. I would say that less then 10% of the customers actually *need* a laptop but they want them anyway. Normal people dont care about the price vs speed. For them the convenience of not dealing with cables and getting online in the backyard is more then worth it.
Yeah, I've been working retail three years... - scallon, on 01/05/2008, -1/+10From a pure horsepower to price comparison, you just can't beat a desktop. Until the price disparity lessens somewhat, desktops will always be the better deal.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+8but then people wouldn't have a reason to just go out and buy a "new " laptop
- h4mx0r, on 01/05/2008, -1/+8I bought my first laptop a few weeks ago... :)
Still though, I don't really ever buy a new desktop, I always just buy new spare parts and slowly upgrade my computer. - ivoices, on 01/05/2008, -2/+8Didn't this happen already?
- asialife, on 01/05/2008, -2/+8It seems laptop sales eclipsed desktop all over the world in 2007.
- renegadeafk, on 01/05/2008, -1/+7desktop shall always rule gaming
- MikeCerm, on 01/05/2008, -1/+6I wouldn't go by Apple's numbers. Remember that Apple doesn't even make a mainstream, desktop computer. The Mini and the iMac don't count, for obvious reasons. Each is sorely lacking in upgradeability, which is commonly case with laptops, but unlike laptops, neither is portable.
Why would anyone buy a Mini when, for $200 extra, you could buy a more powerful MacBook, that you can actually carry around? You can make the same case for why the $2000 MBP is a better choice than a $1500 iMac. - BinaryFragger, on 01/05/2008, -1/+5You've never owned a ThinkPad, then. With their titanium frames, they're practically indestructible.
I've been using a T60 for the past year, and it still looks brand new. I know people that use T40s and T23s that still work well, too.
My Dell Inspiron 1100, on the other hand, was the victim of two cracked hinges within 18 months. - aydoubleyou, on 01/05/2008, -2/+6Its funny because Ive owned desktops for the past 10+ years and never a laptop.
But browsing NewEgg during 4th quater of 2007, I decided to finally get myself a laptop. And now I see that I wasnt the only one to realize it was a good time to do so :). - wocca, on 01/05/2008, -1/+4yep, prices are falling..
- Twee, on 01/05/2008, -1/+4Don't Apple's iMac computers already use laptop chipsets?
- BlakeEM, on 01/05/2008, -1/+4I bring it to friends house to play lan games or use it to diagnose problems when my main PC is having problems. It's very small and can sit on the desk right next to my PC, I wouldn't have room for a whole other computer. Not to mention use it when you're playing games to look things up. I could go on and on...
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -1/+4My laptop is better than my desktops. I haven't upgraded them ever since my parents bought them, they're still running with 256mb ram O.o.
- iofthestorm, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3There's never going to be a point where laptop tech is faster than desktop tech, there's just too many limiting factors such as size, power draw, heat, noise, etc that severely limits laptop parts. The price disparity will always exist, because laptops always get old/shrunken/weaker desktop tech. I suppose the only exception would be the Pentium M->Core architecture, where the Pentium M (based off of P III) architecture led to the development of the Core architecture, but that's a bit of a stretch.
- motang, on 01/05/2008, -2/+42007 was good for laptops so I don't really doubt that 2008 will be worst. Especially with the prices coming down.
- BinaryFragger, on 01/05/2008, -2/+4Doesn't surprise me, considering the current prices for laptops. I require a laptop for work (presently using a Lenovo T60) but for home use, I still prefer a desktop computer.
A lot of cheaper laptops still have 5400RPM harddrives, and although they're quickly increasing in capacity, I want more space. I'm aware that I can use an external harddrive, but I find that many of them lack adequate cooling, making them unsuitable for long sessions.
I'll keep my desktop until laptops have 500+GB of disk space. - krahzee, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2Not really shocking. sure desktops will always be better in terms of raw performance, but that having been said, most users day to day simply would not ever use that margin of difference between the two. Sure they cost a bit more, but if you live in a house or an apartment that doesn't have the space to dedicate to seperate area for a desktop, it's not as much of a compramise as it once was. Even things like bigger storage space can be achived with a USB harddrive.
- BinaryFragger, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2I use a laptop for work, and it's fine even if I sit all day at my desk.
I have a USB keyboard and mouse at my desk, so if I spend all day at the office, I just plug them in and I'm good to go.
It's the best of both worlds for me. I can bring my computer wherever I need to be, and I get to use a mouse and fullsize keyboard if I'm at the office all day. - Error601, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2So, I guess the claims that they already have turned out wrong? I haven't bought a personal non-server box that wasn't a laptop for at least five years but we still do buy a lot for work.
- DamnMan, on 01/05/2008, -1/+3Panasonic makes toughbooks. they seem to hold up pretty well.
- tigerjk, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2My only reason as to why I still don't own a laptop.
- WWWoody, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2Well, when you can get a laptop that outshines most peoples desktops at wally world for ~500-600 bucks...
They really aren't bad at all for people that don't play games or do huge graphic editing. 1-2GBs of RAM, decent CPU, nice glossy screen.
It just works. - inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2Yep.
- BinaryFragger, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2Just give it some time. Like other technologies, the price will go gradually go down, and the capacity will increase. I paid almost $500 for a 5GB harddrive a decade ago.
- Tenlow, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2I still use my T23 daily. My 15" powerbook was twice as much and lasted half as long. One of these days I'll get a new MBP, but the T23 isnt going anywhere for a long time.
- secleinteer, on 01/05/2008, -1/+3This must mean 2008 is the year of the Linux LAPTOP!!!
- alphaterminus, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Granted my family are early adopters, but since day 1 when wireless routers were sold, we use laptops like a newspaper. We have like 6 cheap ones around the house that are always on. The convenience factor is really lifestyle changing. You can eat breakfast and read on online newspaper. You lay on the couch with the television on and im your family and friends. We have 3 desktops which are rarely used with the exception of 1, which powers Beyond TV on one of our televisions. The other 2 are only used for home office work and aps that require more horsepower like Photoshop, After Effects, and the occasional gaming. Once people get used to having Wifi and a laptop, they can't imagine life without that convenience.
- Dumbledorito, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1As opposed to processing power, memory, reliability, and upgradability?
We could chrome the cover of a book full of Betty Paige pinups and probably save you a lot of money. - wonderchemist, on 01/05/2008, -2/+3For home computers yes, Apple (which has a very small enterprise sales) already sells more laptop than desktops (4,337 kunit vs 2,714 kunit 52-week Q4 numbers). I dunno if the same will be true in the enterprise markets as the mobility gained by a laptop, is offset by the fact you sit infront of it at your desk all day long.
- Dumbledorito, on 01/05/2008, -2/+3I could see a hybrid system at some point (a laptop device that can dock with a desktop module containing a more powerful graphics card and so on) but for the graphics work I do, give me my dual-monior setup with a Wacom, full-sized mouse & keyboard and cable pipe over a laptop any day of the week.
- corduroy, on 01/05/2008, -1/+2Not just for the home. I work at a research facility and we probably ordered our last desktop. From now on all our orders are for notebooks. The difference in processing power for our non super intensive stuff is at the point where we won't miss having desktops. There will be the occasional desktop (we did pick up a dual quad, 8 gigs ram, etc for microscope work). In a few instances we need higher resolution monitors (why have most notebooks been stuck at 1280x800 for sooo long?) but it's easy enough to plug in an external lcd (and mouse/keybaord) for that.
- orbit1979, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1An iMac is just a vertical laptop with external mouse and keyboard.
- Tenlow, on 01/05/2008, -1/+2The funny thing is all of those features you listed would work on a laptop the same as they work on your desktop.
- CaviMike, on 01/05/2008, -1/+2That doesn't mean it prefers to be in your lap.
- miaow, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1yes my understanding is that laptops sell more.
- Error601, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1My relatively old Alienware laptop has a standard upgradeable graphics card. Calling it a "laptop" is suspect since you'd cook yourself and the computer if you ever put it on your lap.
- obxjdt, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1I'd love to have a laptop. but until I get the same bang for the buck, I ain't buying one....
- Dumbledorito, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Depends on the casemod.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1I have a laptop... at the end of this month, I'm going back to desktop. After a year with this laptop, i'm sick to death of it. They are not worth it.
- miaow, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1I will buy a laptop next time. Not sure why I didn't last time. Somehow we were programmed into thinking we needed to buy big ugly noisy machines with wires all over the place and loads of space for upgrading.
- miaow, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Another alternative would be an lcd with all the computing inside like the old crt imac. A laptop hard drive and so on. The box and noises and wires have to go, for non-gamers
- roberto_deneero, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1http://www.cartalkforum.com/images/smilies_funny/s ...
- allaboutdatiki, on 01/05/2008, -2/+2I'd love to see a comparison of the energy usage difference between an average laptop and an average desktop ... no doubt there's one out there ...
