- WiseWeasel, on 01/11/2008, -1/+37Podcasting is exactly how broadcast TV networks need to be distributing their shows on the internet. If they could release video podcasts of all their major shows, with commercials, we could just subscribe to the shows we want, and have them automatically synced with our computers or playback hardware as they're released. No need to use a web browser and navigate their website, no need to manually download episodes and manage them; the content we want would be automatically delivered to subscribers. If broadcasters are serious about staying in control with the shift towards IPTV, standard format video podcasts would be an excellent place to start.
- borez, on 01/11/2008, -0/+21Errr...who said they were dead?
Did I miss something? - wonderchemist, on 01/11/2008, -0/+19When did someone say Podcasting was dying? Just because "OMG Apple is D00MED once a month"?
- marshallk, on 01/11/2008, -7/+21I dunno, I find diggnation incredibly boring compared to many other good podcasts out there.
- sleeknerve, on 01/11/2008, -1/+15what how? podcasts dont have to be serious all the time, and face it, watching them try to talk about serious stuff while there drunk is really funny, and practically the main point of the show
- ojk007, on 01/11/2008, -4/+14i see what you did there. It Sucked.
- Blankford, on 01/11/2008, -7/+14as long as Kevin and Alex keep making quality Diggnation episodes, podcasts will never die....
- EvilAnimator, on 01/11/2008, -0/+7NIce kissass there, Blankford.
- HUKI365, on 01/11/2008, -1/+8Actually it was a much used innovation that iTunes came to later. For example Diggnation started before iTunes offered podcast support.
- fkr3, on 01/11/2008, -3/+10And when you get a bit older you'll find it's more fun to do that with your mates rather than watch someone else do it.
- WWWoody, on 01/11/2008, -0/+7That's what I said, didn't I? List three things that will ruin my day if I use it.
- z3021017, on 01/11/2008, -0/+6I love listening to podcasts rather than the breakfast radio on the drive to work.
My favourites in order:
ESPN: PTI (don't always manage to catch it on TV)
1UP Yours
Gamespot's The Hotspot - BurgerDST, on 01/11/2008, -0/+6Podcasts are just starting. Radio should worry. I grew sick of 10 min of radio programing then 20 min of commercials. Now I load up my D2 PMP with Diggnation, Tekzilla, Twit, NPR programs, DLTV, and many others that match my specific interests. Now I have too many things to listen too. Podcasting had done for my audio enjoyment what TIVO did for TV. Now I don't waste time on programing that is of no interest to me and excessive commercials. Inside Renewable Energy podcast or Military History podcast are loaded up for my drive tomorrow. Feeling stupid? Take a class from Harvard or MIT. Want to laugh? Check out the Onion Radio or Ask a Ninja.
- Vician, on 01/11/2008, -0/+5I have a Zune myself, what's wrong with owning one? The newest firmware works pretty damn well, I really like the 80GB one, and video play back on it is quite nice. What in the iPod line, for example, offers me 80GB of space and the same viewing experience for as much as I can get a Zune? Don't be a fanboy and buy what works, no matter what it is.
- phoomp, on 01/11/2008, -0/+5Podcasting saved me from the RIAA. Long live podcasting!
- sleeknerve, on 01/11/2008, -1/+6i kind of go outside all the time, so thats why podcasts are good, so i can listen to them on the go. You seem to be too ignorant to see the benefit in them though so instead you try to insult people that you think have a worse life that you do, which is always a great way to make new friends. Although your probably taking the advantage of being anonymous on the internet, so that way no one could beat you up when you insult them, which is probably what happens to you in real life all the time, so your tired of that and decided to be a douchebag on the internet
- stealthrocket, on 01/11/2008, -2/+7I go outside while listenign to my Podcasts. Get an iPod dude.
- spyrochaete, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Is Diggnation any good? I read some of the episode descriptions and it sounds like drunken frat boys ogling supermodels. I used to love Kevin's Dark Deals and hacker stuff from TSS so if Diggnation is at least somewhat educational I might be able to stomach it. Advice?
- BeeArePro, on 01/11/2008, -1/+5I'm a big time podcaster. I download radio shows that keep me sane at my job. I also love the Vh1 Best Week Ever podcast and NPR's Wait Wait Don't tell me.
- santaliqueur, on 01/11/2008, -2/+6Then you came back inside to make this post? stfu.
- xister, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4It would be a good place to start from our point of view (read: a normal, rational person's point of view), but we're talking about people that have advertising running through their blood. Their first thought (if they even considered podcasting at all) was probably, "OMG you can skip any commercials in the show!?!?!? Sorry- next idea..."
- stockjones, on 01/11/2008, -3/+6Podcasting lol all you are doing is downloading a fricking mp3 file.
- spyrochaete, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3I find it difficult to watch YouTube in the middle of rush hour.
- BurgerDST, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3Great idea. I think they prefer to sell the episodes for 2 bucks each. If they were free or lowered the price to 50 cents and kept the commercials in, they would be huge. I wouldn't even bother to skip the commercials if they were short and to the point. In fact, make me watch the commercial while the episode is downloading and use my amazon profile or something to target the add to something I might actually be interested in. I don't always have internet access or a computer to watch an episode on a browser, but I always seem to have PMP with me. "Thank you for choosing to download Chuck, Please choose an ad that might interest you to continue...Diapers, Beer, Dog food, or Video Games. Thank you for choosing video games... PC, Xbox360, PS3, or Wii. Thank You." Game trailer begins. A link to buy the game appears at the end. It would take a few short seconds to start or watch an add. I'd spend more time tracking it down to pirate it via bit torrent.
- JoeDiggsIt, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3Sounds like you had a pretty good podcast going. Btw, the Mooney Suzuki are awesome.
- lul101, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3Same, i personally prefer: TTRS over Diggnation. Their reviews are the best(although contains some spoilers for movies) , and love the fact that they don't give a number out of 10.
- CraigRat, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Podcasts keep me sane when I am on the road heading to remote sites....
I look forward to my distorted View,KATG, The Awful Show, SModcast and Never Not Funny fixes...
Far from dead, the medium is improving...the good ones get better, the chaff falls to the wayside... - rwscold, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2podcasts ftw!!
- WWWoody, on 01/11/2008, -3/+5I wouldn't get my news in the morning if I didn't have podcasts. NPR + zune = Informed.
We don't get the station in my area, in case you didn't catch that. - MindTrigger, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2I love well produced, niche podcasts. I consume various podcasts on subjects like programming, scifi, backpacking/hiking, philosophy, hemp/marijuana, spirituality, futurism, and more. The biggest bummer about podcasts is how quickly they seem to come and go. Most people should not podcast, but there are a lot of decent ones out there.
- xister, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Wow... You know, a little googling beforehand usually helps you avoid stupid statements like that. Besides, popularity does not always = innovation. By your logic, Britney and Paris are innovative women...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_podcasting ... - JDoggMac, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Podcasting will never die, same with video podcasting
- KMartSheriff, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Anyone who still says "OMG Apple is doomed" hasn't been outside in a long time.
- WiseWeasel, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Two words: product placement
: P
You do make a good point though. I already skip most commercials with my DVR, and maybe they could bank on the fact that a large portion wouldn't bother skipping ads... - aburrido, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1So you're the one
- JoeDiggsIt, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1So what podcasts do you enjoy? (I'm asking a serious question.)
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -2/+3Gtfo the internet.
- JoeDiggsIt, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1Cool, thanks, I listen to a lot of NPR podcasts but I haven't heard of that one. neat concept.
- xister, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1I did podcasting for about two years over at Podomatic and the thing that ended up driving me away from it was the ***** site. They did that stupid crap that sites do when they have an IT staff that is lacking; they roll out tons of features to keep your mind off the problems that the site is having and to keep you around. The site was so broken at one point that I couldn't access my podcast for over half a year. I ended up going down from over 2000 DL's a month to 200. I was so pissed I vowed never to go back to the site. I ended up going over to that ***** Adam Curry's site and the setup is so confusing (not to mention the ***** and obnoxious commercials they produce and place in front of your podcast) that I gave that up after a month or so. There are a lot of great places to find podcasts, but not many to easily produce and publish (think: Blogger for podcasts). I think that podcasting would flourish if there were more sites that made it easier to publish. Though I could be wrong about that- I haven't been in the game for almost a year now.
- istoleherface, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1Geeknights is the greatest podcast. period.
- brundlefly76, on 01/11/2008, -1/+2Podcasting download stats are irrelevant as they are often scheduled, unattended, and automatically updated whether they are watched or not - unwatched items may in fact represent the vast bulk of dls.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Hosting your own is also a viable option, especially if you had 2000 downloads a month.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Highly, highly recommend The Chaser's War On Everything.
- counterplex, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1Lots of interesting ones out there - the following are some of my favorites (I know you didn't ask me specifically but what the heck :)):
NPR Intelligence Squared US: http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/podcast_detail.php? ...
WNYC Radio Lab: http://feeds.wnyc.org/radiolab
ABC TV The Chasers War on Everything: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/chaser/war/int/vodcast/ (it looks like they're not allowing any more downloads of the show - not sure if the podcasts get updated) - MrViklund, on 01/11/2008, -1/+2Don't think I can agree with you there. Sorry to say but I don't like Diggnation at all. I have tried to start to watch it 2-3 times and every time I only see crap and what a good podcast it could have been. I know that the podcast have many followers and not to insult them or the show but I really wonder how anyone could watch that show... It's so much of nothing...
- mattyice11, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1Podcasting has nothing to do with Apple despite 'pod' being in its name.
- MacParrot, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1The Zunes seem to be some pretty nice units. Better screen ratio for viewing wide screen content, same storage capacity, some features that the iPod doesn't have. I would buy one myself if it wasn't for the software and some of the limitations of the device.
1. No Mac support. Deal killer for me right away. YMMV.
2. Microsoft's Marketplace requiring pre-purchased points for content. Anything unused sits there drawing interest for Microsoft. I prefer to pay exactly what I need to when I feel like purchasing it like with Amazon's music download service and iTMS.
I won't complain about the DRM as Apple does the same (though no fault of either until the labels allow them to sell it without it). Heck, I don't even mind the brown one. It's just a color. - CuddyBuddy, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1If Radio was like the web directory (aka the original Yahoo, in which I get what Yahoo gave me), podcasting is like a search engine (I get what I want, so more like a google)...now you go figure which will be more popular - a directory or a search engine...not much to figure, eh?
- hrvat420, on 01/11/2008, -1/+1diggnation is the highlight of my week
- Prombar, on 01/12/2008, -0/+0about 100 of those was all me
