- diggmeup, on 10/25/2008, -2/+22jobs down in a bad economy? no suprise there
- dse78759, on 10/26/2008, -0/+12I would not put on a tie for $12-14 an hour.
- Totz83, on 10/26/2008, -0/+11Thank god I work in the graph making sector
*pro-tip* - buy 'down' lines - AlaskaLoneWolf, on 10/25/2008, -0/+11Boil down all the IT guys, until there's nothing left but absolute ninjas.
Look on the bright side, maybe they'll be decent survival-of-the-fitest-deathmatches. - WNW3, on 10/26/2008, -0/+11My company just dumped all our IT and outsourced to EDS. Admittedly our IT was pretty bad. A lot of them were over in India already so that wouldn't impact these numbers. I'll miss the local guys though.
- UrinalPooper, on 10/26/2008, -1/+10I see what you did there.
- EvilFerret, on 10/26/2008, -0/+9I used to work at Spring HQ and at LEAST 90% of us IT people were contracted. I swear I'm so sick of hearing all of these radio commercials trying to claim that there's practically an unlimited job market in IT and it all averages at 75k+ a year. Around here (KC) it's almost impossible to get a permanent position unless you're willing to work for a smaller company for less money. Bah.
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -11/+20we need more H1-B Visas.
- psion01, on 10/26/2008, -0/+9Wait ... Snoggertogger says that and you choose to complain about his GRAMMAR?!
- r00tus3r, on 10/26/2008, -0/+8Man, that bites, but keep your head up, and take the free time off to study, and get some rest.
- olik, on 10/26/2008, -0/+8This is going to get so much worse in the coming months. It hasn't even begun.
- cactus476, on 10/26/2008, -0/+8Within the past week, my department of seven is now down to four....
But that's not due to the economy, it's because I have a new boss.... and he's an ass.
(BTW, I work at a public university) - pinstripewizard, on 10/26/2008, -1/+8All thanks to the Bobs.
- dilloway, on 10/26/2008, -3/+10You're such an idiot.
Sand ***** and Jews HAVE been planning this for a long time.
Unless your use of the noun Sand ***** and Jews is singular. Then I deeply regret critiquing your grammar. Perhaps there is something more profound we can discuss? - Inspectah, on 10/26/2008, -0/+7I told my mom dropping out of ITT Technical Institute was a good idea.now i work for the geek Squad.... :'-(
- phoenixshard, on 10/26/2008, -2/+9And idiots like yourself have been planning that stupid remark for just as long.
- passedoutghost, on 10/26/2008, -3/+10I find this funny because there were several diggers who said that nothing would happen with the drop of the stock market. Idiots.
- DeskFlyer, on 10/26/2008, -0/+7You people work in one of the most important industries ever. Don't give up.
- supermutt, on 10/26/2008, -1/+8You don't need a tie, but clean clothes and pants aren't too much to ask for.
- encrypteduser, on 10/25/2008, -1/+7Yeah, there are way too many frauds in the tech industries. It is unfortunate that layoffs must occur, but this will allow the real pro's to shine.
- supermutt, on 10/26/2008, -1/+6 Our company is trying to hire english speaking internet tech support in northern Minnesota that have some basic people skills. Not great money ($12-14/hr starting) but a stable company with full med/dental/retirement etc..
So far bombing out pretty hard. One guy turned up for his interview wearing a dirty t-shirt, jean shorts and flip flops. He offered to have his parents talk to us if we wanted to get a better idea of his work ethic. - inactive, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5Awesome, now i can have some good tech conversations with my new fellow burger flippers.
- expert01, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5Except for the fact that they're only going to keep people who work for cheap.
Like that one side said, YOU CAN HAVE TWO TYPES OF SERVICE FROM THE FOLLOWING THREE CATEGORIES:
GOOD
FAST
CHEAP
YOU CAN HAVE GOOD FAST SERVICE, BUT IT WON'T BE CHEAP
YOU CAN HAVE FAST CHEAP SERVICE, BUT IT WON'T BE GOOD
YOU CAN HAVE GOOD CHEAP SERVICE, BUT IT WON'T BE FAST - coneybeare, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5My company is looking for a good ops guy... maybe this is good news for us and 1 of those19,683.
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -0/+5I too believe that we should not try to reverse our brain drain by importing foreign talent.
- z28com, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5You can't live on $12-14/hr. nowadays. Things are just too expensive. Living on that money now is like trying to live on $3-5/hr. back in the 1980's. The prices of everything have skyrocketed since then making it too difficult to live on that low income. Companies need to start people off at $50k just to be at poverty nowadays.
- FAT_PIGGY, on 10/26/2008, -3/+8Join the Marine Corps
- r00tus3r, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5Way to ruin it JP, I bet your LOADS of fun at parties.
- schnikies79, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5Glad I don't work in IT.
- JPOnion, on 10/26/2008, -0/+4My tech company is about to lay off around 1000. 20682...
- passedoutghost, on 10/26/2008, -0/+4That's what I was thinking. If things get really bad and I can't find a job, I'll join the army. At least I'll have a steady income, food, shelter, clothing and who can forget the weapons! And I heard you get paid more if you join the special forces or become an officer.
- z28com, on 10/26/2008, -1/+5That's why education is a waste of money. You're better off just starting a business with you're in your early 20's and stick it out until it starts making millions.
When you get a formal education, all you're doing is making someone else rich in the pyramid scheme of things.
Put all of that same effort into working for yourself. You'll be better off. Jobs are a waste of time. - DeskFlyer, on 10/26/2008, -0/+4Do you need photographers for any obscure reason?
- m0llusk, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3Surely you mean "prose".
- jsp123, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3What company?
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3My company laid off a lot of people in all parts of the company. I have always wondered about the mentality that thinks they can solve problems by eliminating the people who actually produce for the company instead of eliminating the people who are running the show. It's like a ship headed towards the rocks. Getting rid of half the oarsmen only slows the ship's coarse towards disaster. To solve the problem the captain needs to be thrown overboard and a new coarse needs to be set.
- winmywii, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3My company is hiring developers in the Milwaukee office.
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3For the price of ITT, you can buy your own geek squad.
- Snap65, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3Where is this "unlimited job market in IT"? I've been searching for it.
sincerely,
Underpaid IT guy that works at a small company. - rbempah, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3I actually work at EDS and the layoffs have started and it is so depressing to see your co-workers getting layed off left and right, and you are sitting at the edge of your seating wondering if you are going to be the next one to be let go. This is a crazy kind of way to live everyday. This is especially tough on parents who are single and depending only one income, which is me. So many days you get so depressed you don't' want to go to work because you just don't want to get layed off that day.
- Enlefo, on 10/26/2008, -1/+4Add another 10 people to that list, my company laid off nearly 10% of it's people... myself included. Lucky for me I had already made plans to leave the country... see ya later suckers.
- pak314, on 10/26/2008, -2/+5At $12 an hour who can afford clean clothes and pants?
- expert01, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3Hey, support.com is hiring! Those bastards wouldn't hire me (conflict of interest my ass). Anyways, Help Desk Technicians for $13.50 to $15.00 an hour. Full time. Repair computers over the internet from home.
All you need is an industry certification, a computer running at 3GHz (or supposedly a dual-core running faster than 2GHz or a quad core), dual monitor setup, and a high speed internet connection. They're partnered with office depot, and boy do they need help. - thegreatsam, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3=(
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2I'd rather drive around in circles in my forklift for $28 p/h full time. Thank ***** trucks never stop like tech does.
I'll point you to a better industry
http://www.seek.com.au/users/apply/index.ascx?Sequ ... - r00tus3r, on 10/26/2008, -3/+5You're lucky anyone turned up at all. That salary is downright pathetic.
- 1Bad, on 10/26/2008, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Household_income_in_t ...
Median household income among men $45k, and among women $33k. I don't think the majority of people are in poverty. Yes, at that level of income it is harder to enjoy all the luxuries that we see in the media such as fancy cars, new computers, new cell phones, and big screen TVs. However, many people live happily on those wages.
Hell, I work part-time as a student and when I am in school don't even make the median, however I still manage to pay for everything I need to survive plus all the extras I desire. I also live in California, and am not in debt. On the other hand I don't have to support a family. -
