18 Cool Things Google Could Do With YouTube

splashcastmedia.com — Google made an official statement this morning about its plans for YouTube; those plans are interesting - but there's a whole lot more that could be done. Here's a list of 18 cool things the company could do now that it owns the world's leading source for online video.

  • Joab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1519.) Allow live streaming video. i.e. As its being filmed it can be watched. I would like to see independent video news sources start appearing on the web. I'm talking about a group a lot more organized then a 1 man show filmed via a webcam.

      The idea itself is very tricky! I'd like to be my own personal streaming, but you have two options:
      1) get a mega hot upload speed to stream to everyone, and be a web server
      2) attempt to find a free multicast server that lets you use any kind of format.

      So, the stickams a great place.

    19. Do not, under any circumstances, *googlify* YouTube. Meaning: Do not link any YouTube Profiles to Google IG, Google Mail, Google Notebook, Google Sitemap, blah blah blah. You get the point.

    Likelihood: No chance. They will googlify the shizznik out of YouTube.

Neither do I want my private life analyzed by some Google mathematician. I can see the point in Google's strategy and I know they need to expand so their shareholder value stays up. But damn ... why googlify YouTube? So they can serve me ads of automatic WebCams that does one snapshot every day for 3 years straight or selling me CounterStrike:Source just because I like watching nerds screaming "Headshot! I 0wn0rz you, b*tch!"?

    Keep the service separated and all will be good.

    Provide users with tools for online video editing so that users can mix videos online.
    Provide a CVS like tools also for video editing.
    Encourage mixing and content creation with Special FX, ex : sell suits for motion tracking and software for avatars, like golem in Lord of the rings.
    Promote free software to do video editing.
  • ninefourchevo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd like to see YouTube's video player interface be identical to Google's (aside from the branding).. Google's is much slicker. It lets you jump to precisely any point and buffers from there. The YouTube one doesnt come close.
