- linker3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Flash memory - no moving parts? - well, those electrons don't stand still!
Seriously though, has the author just trawled through the last two years of tech web sites and pulled out some oft-mentioned terms?

Voluntary, qualified, peer reviewers(???) - blastcube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What the hell?
"By transmitting data to and receiving instructions from nearby base stations, BAN chips can reprogram your heartbeat at your doctor's office or make a diagnosis from a bedside wireless monitor at home."
I hope i'm not the only one that thinks this is a bad idea. Some guy will probably get blackmailed by someone who hacked his pacemaker, threatening to shut it down if he doesn't give him half a million dollars.
Let us pray Microsoft doesn't provide the embedded software for these. - jaknet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"BAN chips can reprogram your heartbeat at your doctor's office"
Brings a whole new (and scary) meaning to the phrase "there has been a fatal error at..................... this program will now shutdown" - drpsycho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Buzzword hell.
- dilbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From TFA: "...flash memory is smaller, has fewer moving parts..."
Waddaya mean, fewer moving parts? IIRC: NO moving parts at all. - twyford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Flash Memory has fewer moving parts? IT HAS NO MOVING PARTS! :P
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What about Quantum computing? The first quantum chips have already been developed:
http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/01/12/2327246 - Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"and the URL remains "maps.google.com" instead of the meaningless string of letters and numbers"
Which is a disadvantage of AJAX, not an advantage... - tomakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"...flash memory is smaller, has fewer moving parts and uses less power."
Uhh last time I checked flash is solid state and there are no moving parts. - RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wank, first of all ajax is not a new technology its old as dirt, someone decided to name a bunch of protocols together
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Samsung announced a 16Gbit chip, not GB. 16Gbit is 2GB."
You mean a 16GiBit chip, not GBit. - bitswapper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fiber to every home? They're going to pay for that exactly how, again? I think it'll happen eventually, but for 06, its still in its infancy.
Here's a few they left out that will more than likely occupy people's minds with respect to technology: Broadcast flag, DRM, and the A-Hole bill. Wait until the average joe can't record the superbowl or listen to his favorite CD on the way to work. That'll get people's attention. - absurdist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Screw AJAX. Screw Flash Memory.
The day my car starts telling me how to drive is the day I take a 200 watt soldering gun to its CPU. - richliquid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I learned some new terms. For example: SPIT:
"...VoIP can be used like e-mail to send a single voice message to thousands of recipients simultaneously, creating a telemarketer from hell."
dugg - Calculon64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice find.
- Vlatro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This spring, Lexus models in Japan will be available with a camera mounted on the steering column that uses facial-recognition software to determine whether you're watching the road. "
Fitting they release this technology in Japan first.
Finally someone has found a politically correct way of saying:
"Hey you asian guys, ***** pay attention when you're driving" - TarryTops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK now please find me links to 1000 more of those 15 Top tech tings to learn for 2006.:D
- pab89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"BAN chips can reprogram your heartbeat at your doctor's office"
What an excellent idea, and there's absolutely no chance of interference from my microwavURGGGHHHHH!!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you still get wear and tear in those flash chips, moving parts or no.....
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I think having a car break by it self will cause more accidents than driver error. Can you imagine looking off to the side for a second doing 65 mph and having you car start to break. That would probably disorient the driver making an accident more likely.
- CaptainGs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dig'd this story! IPTV stirs my geek imagination -- I'm working on a mythtv box as we speak :D
But seriously, "Metadata" as a new concept for this year?? I'm going to announce that file headers are a new concept this year too --- just because most people don't realize it's there doesn't mean it should be held up as new. I just don't understand why anyone that isn't already accustomed to metadata, will have to do so just this year. - yoshisushi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Perpendicular Storage? The smaller Toshiba drives already have this.
- CadMasterAdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why isn't SED technology on there?
- Alef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@bitswapper
"Fiber to every home? They're going to pay for that exactly how, again? I think it'll happen eventually, but for 06, its still in its infancy."
Fiber to the home has been available for half a decade even in tiny villages in the middle of nowhere in northern Sweden (Västerbotten County), where the population density is 5 people/sq km on avarage. It costs about $20 per month. - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm still waiting for my flying car, personal jet pack, home fusion reactor, direct neural connect and a whole lot of other things. What really happens is you get a whole lot of other stuff that is sometimes more amazing than what they write about.
- scurrg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Samsung announced a 16Gbit chip, not GB. 16Gbit is 2GB.

- weissed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice article. Thanks for sharing.
"Sirius is betting on the automobile back seat, with a planned offering of two or three video channels aimed at bored kids on their way to grandma's."
I hope they don't bet too much money on this... - Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL, we won't see fiber at out doorstep for 5 or more years. But when we do it will be sweet. Streaming HD anyone?
- inveterate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah, nothing like the new year for tech articles written by non-tech savdefine savvy writers.
There is a reason Pop. Mech. stopped letting people comment on their articles a few years ago - they are usually embarrassed. - bitswapper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Fiber to the home has been available for half a decade even in tiny villages in the middle of nowhere in northern Sweden (Västerbotten County), where the population density is 5 people/sq km on avarage. Hmm. What's it take to become a citizen of Sweden? - NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd say only about 3 things I certainly needed to know about.. and it probably wouldn't have hurt very much if I didn't know the other 12 things. Nevertheless, good read. Digg. :)
- zmich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In response to the flash memory comments.
LAME. - freeyayo50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im interested in the Nanoparticle Batteries. Cool to charge your ipod to full power in just a minute.
- PseudoCyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old concepts fluffed up by an ignorant pseudo techie. No digg.
- gizmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.openedboxx.com for iptv news and reviews :D
- shreky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the IPTV. Not sure if it will catch on though.
http://www.westernstudios.net - h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Metadata: why would anyone aside from programmers care about that?
"It won't be easy--or cheap--to establish a secure, nationwide networkthat puts test results and prescriptions online, and allows nationaldisease trends to be tracked."
Why not? Any techy could set it up pretty cheap. Is this just a way for the techies to exploit more money for themselves that should be used in office equipment?
"Hitachi estimates that by the end of the decade, perpendicular drives could store 10 times more data than today's drives."
That's great but the title is 15 terms you'll need to know by 2006, not by the end of the century.
PRESOLAR INTERSTELLAR GRAINS
Honestly... Who cares?
FIBER-TO-THE-HOME
Yes, please.
BLIND-SPOT DETECTION
Last I heard they were called rear-view mirrors. Properly adjusted, you will have no blind spot.
Pedestrian Protection System (PPS)
" if you smack a pedestrian, the hood is automatically raised to cushion his landing on the engine block"
Uh...I'd rather land on a hood than an engine block any day.... - zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fiber-to-home will be great. i can't wait.
- northLite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Threading - Yes times 1000, comments are almost unusable how the are, Ive been wanting this for forever
Article categories - have you ever looked on the right side of the homepage?
Negative Digging - reporting stories, most of the diggs occur after a story is already on the homepage anyway, the report feature is good enough, and there needs to be an option to view stories that have been reported
Metamoderation - read about this on google, seems like the first order of business is to get threaded comments though
Voluntary, qualified, peer reviewers(???) - those would be every user on this site. who knows about qualified though, maybe some of the top users are.
-linker 3000 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm assuming Rick Romero was a contributor to this article.
- TwistedMenta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well none is fewer than any moving parts
- Vladk1000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Interesting, nice find.
