- VSack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The funny thing is its only the tools who have zero business sense or who are just fanatics about other non-MS software that don't understand one thing: You don't have to like him, but you have to give him credit.
- Microsoft has been instrumental in mainstreaming and standardizing PCs in today's digital age.
- Bill Gates hasn't necessarily been innovative in the sense of inventing new and exciting technologies, but he has had a decent business sense when it came to what to push and what to avoid.
- Microsoft can be blamed for being evil and monopolistic, but every new technology has required a singular point of focus and control to assure that standards are created (even if the company is the one to dictate a standard of their own). American Railroads, Standard Oil, AT&T, and Microsoft are all clear examples of this.
Hate if you want, but you all have something to thank Gates for. - FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Don't be a fool, he's rich becuase he found a product that people wanted, and gave it to them"
Not exactly. Most of the wealth and power at Microsoft came from the profits off their OS and Office suite. In both cases, they basically made it impossible to buy a PC without getting Windows, and they were found (and upheld) to be an illegal monopoloy for they way they used illegal methods to get and maintain their market position. So it wasn't that everyone wanted Microsoft products, they got them whether they wanted them or not, and Bill got the change.
That said, it is a very good thing what he is doing with his money now. I applaud him. Andrew Carnegie did the same thing. A rotten SOB in his life, he later gave his money away and rehabilitated his image. That's the transition Gates is undergoing now, and no one can deny that it's a good thing that he's doing. But let's not rewrite history as to how he got the money in the first place. - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How was he disgusting :D?
And as for Signing up to classes that had the hottest girls, I give him props but thats only because he reminds me of myself, I only went to school because of the hot girls. - stanley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Somehow, "Stealing from the middle class to give to the poor" doesn't quite have the same ring to it"
He's not stealing from anybody, we pay him for a product you WANT, not a product you NEED. Don't complain about the price and quality of Window's and other microsoft products, if your that against it, move to Linux or get a Mac. The only reason he got rich was due to providing a product that the people wanted. Nobody made you upgrade your windows if you still have it, Win95 still runs just as it did before, so he's not stealing by offering better products like 98, NT, XP and now Vista. Don't be a fool, he's rich becuase he found a product that people wanted, and gave it to them, lets see you do better.
I think its amazing that he's willing to donate 90%+ of his money to charities, i heard he already set up small trust funds for each of his kids so they will have to work in their lives not just live off their dads success, it will be enough to give them comfort somewhere along their lives. Hopefully he'll be smart and divide it up a bit, some to the poor, some to aids, some to cancer and some to charities. He has alot of money that can be put to great use. - saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+115. When he saw a prototype of apples 'lisa' with a mouse and gui, he made his programmers work day and night to copy it and release it before apple did.
And thats a fact. - zoomie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The rocking thing could be attributed to Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism...high functioning austism. There has wide speculation that Gates is an "Aspie". Many Asperger support groups like to count einstin, isaac newton and other geniuses as "Aspies". And of course, for the FOSS community, Bram Cohen is an admitted Aspie
- Animal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, sounds like a nerd. How strange.
- chimney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1most of this info is in the book "Hard Drive : Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0887306292/104-6071855-6987109?v=glance&n=283155&s=books&v=glance
i read it back in high school sometime between 96 and 98 - FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, pmr, that's not it. Otherwise you would have to argue that all the Microsoft fanboys who rag about Apple are feeling inadequate about their OS choice. Leave the psychiatry to the experts.
- FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seriously, someone should combine the Ballmer monkey-dance video with the Gates rocking-back-and-forth video, and make it look like Billy-boy is rocking to Ballmer's rhythm. Best video ever!
- shit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Number 15: BILL IS SHORT FOR WILLIAM.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet you'd be all over this if this was Steve Jobs....
- flump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0number evelven on that list is quality :P great digg.
- bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really love reading why people didn't like an article and they are not digging it. Thanks for the info Ginocide. Keep up the good work. Maybe one day we'll all have that kind of time to waste.
- FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you take the time to read an article, note the comments, and then add a comment of your own to say, "No digg!" you have just undercut your own comment. You evidently digged the story enough to go that far.
- FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is something truly hilarious about writing "the Mac looser community" and spelling it wrong!
- kylebrothert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is lame. The grammar is horrible, and it's not interesting.
- ozjmu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was really hoping that "gates_rocking.avi" would be Bill Gates head banging to some Whitesnake...oh well.
An interesting list, but I can't digg due to spelling/grammar and digging your own blog (diggsturbation?). - ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That list is poorly written, full of spelling errors, poor grammar, and words completely left out.
And it made it to the front page of digg. 8-0 - aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the rocking was a bit wierd.
- lotus22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ Vsack
Amen Brotha. - Soniti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This video supports my notion that all it takes is different chemical levels in the brain, and a person is a genius. I think that rocking back and forth is a nervous twitch of sorts- showing his brain isn't 100% stable with all the information being processed.
It's sad to think that this man is a billionaire, simply because genetics gave him a GREAT roll of the dice.
~Soniti - Bungler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's sad to think that this man is a billionaire, simply because genetics gave him a GREAT roll of the dice."
So, what's your principle? People's circumstances should not be determined by random events? How do you propose to change this? - Quest-Master, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The rocking back and forth video has been Dugg ;(
- truk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kind of cool. I'd never seen the rocking video before.
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"gates is donating 90%+ of his wealth to charities when he dies..."
Somehow, "Stealing from the middle class to give to the poor" doesn't quite have the same ring to it. ^_^ - Pooter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a lot of this stuff was in the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley. If you havent seen it yet and you dugg this you'd probably like it. i loved it
- ralcocer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He had a partnership with Paul Gilbert!?!?! Paul Gilbert absolutely rocks!!!
- ComputerGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry about the grammar, I'm not the best hebrew-english translator. I fixed it up a little, hope it's better...
- dotuplink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dude just watch pirates of silicon valley...
- FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ Vsack
Valid points, and credit to him where it is due.
Now, on the other side of the ledger, let's talk about all his cruel, stupid, immature, illegal actions...
OK, on balance...he's a tool. - p014k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can just imagine seeing him in the World Poker Tour at the final table on TV with millions watching and just seeing him get pocket aces and rock back and forth like a psycho. lol
Dugg :) - fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out "The Aviator" with Leonardo DiCaprio it was about another "quirky" businessman, the creator of the H4 Hercules, aka:"spruce goose", Howard Hughes, he was bizzarely successful and famous and had his own OCD demons as well... good flic.
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0#15 - Little Billy Gates only received a contract with IBM because his mommy was on the board.
#16 Little Billy Gates did not write MS-DOS
#17 Little Billy Gates likes to stab his friends in the back. - slemmons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rocking (and rhythmic motion in general) is a typical symptom of autism, and can be seen in people who show signs of mild autistic tendencies as well. Social awkwardness or "nerdiness" can also be a sign of mild autism.
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go on a tour of a psycho ward. Many of the patients in deepest withdrawal will rock back and forth too.
And I'm sure he's like John D. Rockefeller, who started his charitable foundations as a P.R. maneuver, after his mine managers slaughtered women and children at the Ludlow Massacre. - tsigo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Regarding the spelling/grammatical errors, note at the bottom where it says "Translated from TheMarker", which is an Israeli site. I'll give it some leeway.
- mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0here it is for those who can't access it:

WTF? That's some SERIOUSLY hardcore programming he must have been doing. - leomyhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why doesn't this guy try to use spelling and grammar check? No Digg...he lost all credibility with me when I saw it littered with errors.
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ARGH! Someone already owns the domain for traf-o-data.com! I guess no squatting for me.

#15 - Bill Gates only received a contract with IBM because his mommy was on the board.
False, and lacking in important background information.
#16 Bill Gates did not write MS-DOS
Irrelevant, he was able to provide an OS to the right people, at the
right time, after he had tried to help another company get the contract.
#17 Bill Gates likes to stab his friends in the back.
Such As? Most of his "friends" became millionares off of his business
ventures, including the guy that did invent DOS. - ChrisB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://spherule.com/media/video/gates_rocking.mov
- Skizzot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like Bill Gates. I like linux but seriously I like windows a lot too. I think is a ok OS, everything has problems but if you're not retarded and you know what your doing , there isn't anything wrong with windows.
