- senorcool, on 10/17/2007, -4/+76damn, and my cow just got a facebook.
- ThreeDee912, on 10/17/2007, -2/+41Basically: Don't spam, flame, or be a troll.
Most other sites have similar policies.
The age restriction of 18 is BS, as Facebook allows high school students (read: 14 to 18 year olds) to have accounts as well. - NeoCortex, on 10/31/2007, -1/+28No mention of the fact that they also discriminate against weighted companion cubes.
- AccuraCast, on 10/20/2007, -2/+28Aren't half of those the reasons Facebook was invented in the first place - to let people message, befriend and communicate with others???
- Akaji, on 10/16/2007, -1/+24Yes, because using a made-up name is the epitome of social behavior...
- reeder, on 10/16/2007, -2/+22I just love the arbitrary nature of private website rules.
- ArmchairAthlete, on 10/18/2007, -0/+20"10. You are a cow, dog, or library
Being a real person is not enough, you must be a ***** sapien. Accounts have been deleted for cows, dogs and libraries."
Poor Weighted Companion Cube =( - Hayes, on 10/17/2007, -7/+26Buried as inaccurate. You don't get disabled for being under 18. Hell, they ask you for your date of birth. I've been using Facebook for about a year and only recently turned 18.
- MonkCanatella, on 10/16/2007, -0/+16Because he was under 18. Most decent people are born at age 18.
- inactive, on 10/16/2007, -0/+14Correct, but if you are not in a highschool network under the age of 18 your account WILL be disabled. This happened to me and I had to re-register, as they would not re-activate my account until my 18th birthday.
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -2/+16I got locked out of my account because I sent an email to tech support informing them I'm homeschooled. They returned my inquiry by sending me an automated email stating "your account has been disabled until you turn 18". Gee, thanks facebook.
I joined again under another email address and got some friends from a local highschool to approve that I indeed attended there. Facebook is great, but they really need to up their support for homeschoolers. - BarbaraKolbe, on 10/16/2007, -1/+14Are the rumors true regarding the opposite: folks who want to have account disabled and cannot get Facebook to disable? Just asking...
- Rikkochet, on 10/16/2007, -0/+13And I don't know any of you guys.
- verifex, on 10/16/2007, -2/+11Did you read the rules, at all? Most of those rules seem pretty sensible for stopping spam if you ask me.
- Leo21k, on 10/16/2007, -3/+12Facebook, the anti-social social site.
- xswag, on 10/16/2007, -1/+1014. Your Facebook account will be disabled for writing "13 Reasons Your Facebook Account Will Be Disabled".
- doshindude, on 10/17/2007, -1/+9who uses iTunes for free music?????
- Jadey, on 10/16/2007, -0/+8I got an account disabled for not using a real name, but it's their site, if I don't want to play by their rules, I don't have to use it. I have an account with my real name now. It's a bit frustrating to see hundreds of other accounts that aren't real names though. They should apply their rules equally.
- Firehed, on 10/16/2007, -0/+8If you hit the 5000 friend limit on Facebook, you really need to reconsider the meaning the the word "friend". Hint: it's not the same as drunken acquaintance that you barely remember.
- 2Deluxe, on 10/16/2007, -1/+9You fail on so, so many levels.
- WaveRunningNakd, on 10/16/2007, -0/+7My last account was nuked because I wrote a note about what a psychotic biatch my ex is. I never swore, threatened her, used her name, or broke any laws. Every single word was true. She found out about it, complained, and *poof* no more account. When I asked FB for a detailed explanation why, they gave me a BS canned reply that didn't even apply to me.
I used to think MySpace sucked, but at least I had some level of freedom of speech there. Facebook thinks it's the morality police and their ***** treatment of their userbase will lead to their eventual downfall. - verifex, on 10/16/2007, -1/+8I'm surprised they have enough man-power to keep up with all those rules, it seems like it would take a lot of people looking at a lot of peoples info 24/7 to keep on top of the massive amount of people on there, especially considering the rather restrictive nature of most of the rules listed. Although I gotta say most of those rules aren't too terribly draconian, I'm sure it cuts down on a lot of spam. I know I'd much rather have some restrictions then have lots of "spam" users.
- MalDON, on 10/17/2007, -0/+6The article talked about the "odd Facebook app" that lets you autopoke friends. It didn't link to a facebook app. The only Facebook app out there that does this is here:
http://apps.facebook.com/pokestats/
Being the developer of it, I've done quite a bit of testing and talking to the Facebook crew to make sure it falls within their rules. They only have a limit to the amount of people you can poke a day. Once you reach that limit they just stop you until the day is over. They don't disable account over poking.
*end shameless plug* - 2Deluxe, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6Hello. My name is Fluffly Tinkleberry. I would like to attend your 21st birthday party, befriend all your friends and see your contact details.
[ ] ACCEPT [ ] DENY - 2Deluxe, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6If only you had the kind of personality that other people would be interested in! Then you'd be set!
- TheJokerV, on 10/16/2007, -3/+9I don't use facebook but let me get this straight: They force you to use your real name? Are they trying to encourage identity theft? Isn't this the sorta thing most police officers/logical adults would advice against? I know, you can set your profile as private but still. Once your nformation is out there, it's out there. One mor reason why I will never join these retarded social networking sites. If I need more friends I'll do it the old fashioned way: going out and meeting new people.
- krizzle, on 10/17/2007, -0/+6#14 : Your real face is not a penis.
- thrasher9898, on 10/16/2007, -1/+6.....what about creating 100's of fake accounts to get free itunes.....
- Unnis, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5"You chose (or the choice was made for you by your parents/guardians) to be homeschooled. Why do you feel that society should reward anti-social behavior? "
Not wanting to be abused on a daily basis does not qualify as anti-social behavior.
Also, what social skills do you learn in school that you wouldn't otherwise learn in community events, special interest group meetings and other venues that serve as a substitute for school? - inactive, on 10/17/2007, -0/+514. You graduated and got a ***** life.
- windmillninja, on 10/17/2007, -1/+6Poke the ***** out of EVERYTHING
- chillfaktor, on 10/16/2007, -1/+5why does this remind me of the southpark episode where cartman becomes hallway supervisor?
- ILikePants, on 10/20/2007, -1/+5But why does EVERYONE need to see my first and last name? I can message, befriend, and communicate with initials.
- idc5, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4I was disabled for joining a group based on an inside-joke for a friend (which I was invited to). The admin told me that I had created the group which was attacking another member even though I didn't even create it (the original creator left the group and I was the first person to join the group).
- inactive, on 10/16/2007, -0/+4uh?
- shadydentist, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4This explains the mysterious disappearance of weighted companion cube.
- Nerys, on 10/16/2007, -2/+5Or maybe those who actually have a desire to ACTUALLY have an education. I see the education they get in many highschools today. its bout 3rd grade level stuff nowadays in 1th and 12th grade. Pretty lame. My brothers Classes consist of Math - Reading - Gym - Lunch - 3 Periods of Cooking - What the hell is that?
Makes me wish I was homeschooled sometimes. - thenoseymethod, on 10/17/2007, -1/+4I love it how they have the power to completely erase your account, yet you can only 'disable' it.
- RubberBinder, on 10/16/2007, -2/+5Just break all of the rules and your account will be gone.
- Anchoret, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3I find it staggering that people would actually put their real names and personal data on FaceBook or MySpace.
- insanepandas, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Yes, but if people aren't your friends all they can see is your name. As far as I know, you can't steal somebody's identity with just their name.
- luvs2spooge, on 10/16/2007, -2/+5I like the way facebook is now.
I think the requiring people to put their full name prevents it from becoming myspace. That and the fact that it doesn't crash every three hours...
Besides, meeting people in real life that you know on facebook is much less awkward than meeting & heart ; *generic myspace name* (TM) & hearts;. - mattm371, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3I think this list is interesting, essentially the 13 things are all things myspace isn't or won't police, which all boils down to using the network as a marketing piece. i guess thats competition, offer what your competition doesnt
- AgarwaenUmarth, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Anti-social? You're not familiar with homeschooling if you think it's anti-social. I personally am in more than one homeschooling group in Houston. I interact with the State-schooled on a daily basis and am good friends with many of them. But, no, you know far more than I do, as Big Brother has told everything, and I have refused the enlightenment and omniscience that comes with obedience to Caesar.
And you might add one more category: Libertarians. We don't want to be locked into an indoctrination and day care facility for 7 hours out of the day. Just a note.
Government schooling comes out of a sense of entitlement. I shouldn't have to pay for your schooling from the State, which I refuse on religious and political (though the two are one) grounds, but I do, because you think that I owe society something (with you being society). You have no right to have armed goons demand a percentage of my property values, or else I face imprisonment. You demand my money at gunpoint, and then speak of entitlement? Are you not saying that I'm your slave, and that you are entitled to my property when you take of it? Why should I pay taxes for owning property, unless I am a slave? I shouldn't, and by deduction we can reason that I am a slave, but so are you. All hail our supreme lords, who allow us lowly serfs existance! - knutslie, on 10/17/2007, -1/+4***** facebook
- elitedarkness, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2CaponeX says: "Why do you feel that society should reward anti-social behavior?"
CaponeX, do you know many homeschoolers personally, or are you basing your statement on a stereotype? I was homeschooled, and am now one of the youngest customer-facing employees at a fortune 100 tech company and have more money than I know what to do with. Which of those 3 "anti-social" catagory do I fall under?
CaponeX says: "The world does not owe you. The sooner you lose the entitlement complex, the easier your life will be."
haha... see above - mmortal03, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Yeah, me too, I mean, damn them for keeping me from creating my own website!
- pcpimpster, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2The creator of Facebook just got "most influential IT person"...
Great to see him advancing the information age with his myspace for grown ups.
- themilk, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3digg this blog and forward this story to 5 of your friends or you facebook will be deleted!
- inactive, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Yeah, that's probably just because they passed over your account. I initiated contact with them trying to inform them that I'm a homeschooler. I had a constant nagging to join a highschool network and couldn't. When I did they sent me back a "congratulations, your account is disabled until your 18" letter.
