- ifruit, on 06/11/2009, -0/+44I remember in Winter of 1999 walking across a snowy UT campus, someone "walked" giant words into the snow, "Use Napster.com". That was the first time I had ever heard of it. Thank you Mr. Snowalker.
- partysan, on 06/11/2009, -1/+44My god, has it been 10 years already since Metallica was relevant?
- inactive, on 06/11/2009, -0/+34flashback...
"oh boy I can download Pretty Fly for a White Guy in just 15 minutes!" - mpn401, on 06/11/2009, -0/+31Ah, yes, Napster, the good old days...hell if someone didn't always pick up the damn phone in my house while I was on the homestretch of my five-hour download of the entire Soundgarden library.
- LeechesOfKarma, on 06/11/2009, -0/+29I loved Napster. I really felt like they nailed the whole functional process right from the start (besides hosting the files on there own servers). Others like audio galaxy, soulseek, kazaa, etc never seemed quite as nice.
- Hero0fTime, on 06/11/2009, -0/+24Remember the nights when you stayed up til 3 in the morning downloading as many songs possible because that's when no one else was online and that's when music was ripe for the pickin?
- Yankees368, on 06/11/2009, -2/+24Ah yes, Napster. I remember the dot system, Green for a good connection, yellow for OK, and red for bad.
A green, 128kb/s DSL connection was awesome!
A yellow, 56kb/s dial up connection was ok
A red, 28.8kb/s dial up was a no no. - miken32, on 06/11/2009, -1/+20I got all the music for my wedding from Napster. Those were the days.
- inactive, on 06/11/2009, -0/+19Heh, I remember all the mislabeled songs. You know, like every single parody song under the sun being attributed to Weird Al, and things like that.
- gl77, on 06/11/2009, -9/+26***** Lars Ulrich. ***** the RIAA and ***** Napster.
- Chouette4u, on 06/11/2009, -0/+14Cool story bro
- evil-doer, on 06/11/2009, -0/+14maybe for you.
for the rest of us it was ftp sites, irc, newsgroups, etc. - motang, on 06/10/2009, -1/+14I remember using Napster, it was my second year in college. Memories...memories!
- CodenameGamma, on 06/11/2009, -0/+13"You'll never shut down the real Napster."
- alexgdorman, on 06/11/2009, -0/+103am? back in those days I still had a bedtime!
- po43292, on 06/11/2009, -0/+10I remember 5 minutes ago when you couldn't think of anything to say, but you still posted.
- beta1, on 06/11/2009, -0/+9I remember downloading music with my 56k on napster.. Those were good times.
- chubbstar, on 06/11/2009, -0/+9only 10 years? it feels like so much has changed sin ce then.
- DuckSoup1, on 06/11/2009, -0/+9Wow, your e-peen must be SO HUGE right now.
- Avaseal, on 06/11/2009, -0/+8back when a 30+kbps connection was BLAZIN' Fast ..right before Broadband, oh thank jebus for broadband
- pulse768, on 06/11/2009, -0/+8Oh man, I still have mp3s in my collection that I got from Napster. Tied up my phone line for hours just to download REM's Man in the Moon.
- merky1, on 06/11/2009, -0/+8hey - some of us still use WinAmp.
- reefsurfer226, on 06/11/2009, -0/+7i thought i was so l337 with my 56k when my friend had a 28.8...
- evil-doer, on 06/11/2009, -0/+7i remember sitting on irc when a friend told me to join this channel where this dude named "napster" made a program to share mp3s and when i got on there was like 15-20 people connected. must have been a very early beta.
- alexgdorman, on 06/11/2009, -0/+7geez, I still had dial up back then
- LeechesOfKarma, on 06/11/2009, -0/+7I agree soulseek is great for underground music but I haven't used that in some time. Torrents have replaced everything for me.
- deviantsteve, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6!list
- chubbstar, on 06/11/2009, -0/+5pfft. more like irc and ftp servers.
- cam0man, on 06/11/2009, -0/+5i remember joining all those ratio FTP servers, only to log in and find 100 uploads of blur - song 2, the world's smallest song.
- Travelsonic, on 06/11/2009, -0/+5Trolling FTL
- ifruit, on 06/11/2009, -1/+6More like 35 seconds on campus.
- stuwanker, on 06/11/2009, -1/+6***** Napster, remember Scour?
No, sorry, ***** Scour, Napster was a godsend after dealing with that piece of *****. - blindmelon1, on 06/11/2009, -0/+5Lots of people out there still think that "Cat's in the Cradle" is by Cat Stevens.....lol
- jeremymccurdy, on 06/11/2009, -1/+6They weren't relevant then either, Lars Ulrich was just really bitchy.
- Tunguska, on 06/11/2009, -0/+5Congrats
- A11YND, on 06/11/2009, -1/+6Oh Yeah? I was the first user on Napster, don't trust me? Ask Digg user *insert friends name here who will back me up on stupid comment.* See? I told you. I could have a friend arbitrarily lie for me so I can get some kind of vindication of myself as a human being from my fellow peers on the internet.
- PunkFenixJT, on 06/11/2009, -0/+4Anyone else here use napster only to one day wake up and find "User Has Banned By Metallica"??
- atarijedi, on 06/11/2009, -0/+4I shall burn a Metallica effigy in remembrance!
- leamanc, on 06/11/2009, -0/+4Yes, Audiogalaxy! I haven't thought of that in years. It was so great. Oh well, torrent works well today, and actually makes all the old file-sharing clients seem irrelevant.
- SeverTomorrow, on 06/11/2009, -0/+4Cool story bro.
- inactive, on 06/11/2009, -0/+4Songbird. Use it.
- sweetumssama, on 06/11/2009, -0/+4Wow! I didn't know there was a song called "ull like this if you like linkin park godsmack..."
- Eaststand, on 06/11/2009, -1/+4soulseek is still awesome for obscure stuff and remixes
- spokexx, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3oh I absolutely remember when my friends had JUST gotten cable internet and Napster came out. Me and other friends would spend alot of time over there downloading frantically like we discovered gold.
- SeverTomorrow, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3Of course 56k never really got a 56k connection... The best I've ever seen was 48k I believe.
- KingGorilla, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3All alone in the moonlight!
I can smile at the old days! - Scott2, on 06/11/2009, -2/+5Ah yes, I always knew when I got a song from someone else on campus.
And - Oh, God - WinAmp. I shutter at the thought. - beand1p, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3University of T_____?
- leamanc, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3If only I'd had access to broadband in the Napster days, the damage I could have done. I still have a couple hundred full albums burned to CD-R that I got from Napster. (And honestly, I bought on either vinyl or CD everything I really liked. I like having the real product, and still do.)
My memories of Napster are those god-awful waits on dial-up, the joy of discovering so much music I had read about for years but couldn't find locally; and the odd fact that the Mac client could only download, not upload songs to share. I got a lot of messages from folks asking if I had similar tunes to what I was downloading from them, and I always had to say, "sorry, on a Mac."
I also remember that Apple's OS X page proudly displayed the Carbon port of the Napster client. "The file-sharing client comes to Mac OS X in a big way." Which was not true--it was a horrible port, completely unstable, and by that time Metallica had ruined all the fun we were having the past two years. -
