- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13for current business owners too...as a matter of fact, I think anyone who want to make a website should read this....twice
- Railer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"Webmaster is a real job." - I'm putting that on the back of my business card.
Under it, "I am not a wizard, a psychic, or a magician. Please assume no magical powers" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8they didn't say we could use animated backgrounds though... h0h0
- skinnyjohns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Less is definitely more.
- brianamerige, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5...seriously. that's sort of insulting.
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Uh, a Submit to Netscape button? That's just evil.
- critterman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5for potential business owner's this is a great resource.....
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Maybe this observation is completely wrong, but if you're viewing this article because you found it on Digg or if you're a regular reader of that site, then surely these (fairly simple) rules would already be common sense to you?
If not, me and a tidal wave of other graphic designers are standing by to work with you. :-) - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4railer - That is awesome.
- philz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41. Intro. Every website needs one. At least one.
2. "Flash Pages" - code your website using Flash - no one uses HTML
3. Java Applets, let your visitors know how many visitors you have, most of the time 2 digits are enough.
4. "News" Section. This is where you put "Under Construction" or "We have a now homepage" in. With the date of 14.5.2004.
Did I miss something? - MrSarcasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Umm... duh?
- jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25. Make sure the only way to contact you is through a web form that produces a 404 error when submitted.
- ryannerd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Common sense stuff, but written in a humorous way.
- stalinvlad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Perhaps one could search for sites which show some or all of these 10 no-no's and then contact them with an offer to redesign their website...
- OdinEye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably not completely wrong, but it would be a mistake to assume everyone on Digg is a web designer or can write code.
I'm really interested in tech, and I'm fairly handy with a computer, but I've never had the time to learn HTML or any other coding. My business page violates a couple of the "rules" here, primarily because I haven't had that time. I'm then somewhat at the mercy of canned programs (and currently not budgeted for a web designer) and their limitations.
Given that - some extra guidance isn't a bad thing from my perspective. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah... seems like a hint to me. We rushed our site up to meet a deadline for a prospective client. Now, every day, I get some reminder that there are plenty of things we should be doing that we didn't. We've been out for three months and I'm eyeing a redesign. Oh well, such is the ever changing world of web.

- nerdvernacular, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Damn straight! - I refer to KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid. Clients love hearing that.
- moltar2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeahhhh!!! You missed animated gifs! Gosh!! No propa intertube web-site without one!!!11
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree with her ;)
- MrDiggDugg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Not to mention that common sense is anything but -- and doubly so when it comes to web design.
- chrislongridge, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Have they stopped trying now? - Buried!
- nodream, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4buried as bleedin obvious
