Sum won just needs to billed a better spell checker, sew I wood still reed threw and revue your work, Ore not and chews to bee boulder.
I used the spell checker, and it worked great, no misspelled words.
I'm easily amused with our language, I should write like this all the time just to piss off the grammar Nazis :-) - AwwHellYeah, on 10/12/2007, -9/+48Me fail english? Thats unpossible! -Ralph Wiggum
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -7/+37People need to learn their own god damned language if they want to sound remotely intelligent. People who correct them are just fed up.
- Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31In my experience, people who learn English as a foreign language don't make these kinds of mistakes anywhere near as often as people who are native English speakers.
- nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31what about "too" and "to"? That's one of the worst ones.
- SnapETom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Alot.
I hate that. It's a childhood trauma.
In 4th grade, our teacher added "a lot" to the weekly spelling test because so many people were getting it wrong. Each week, someone keep getting it wrong, so she kept it on the spelling test. Week, after week, some bonehead would screw it up and it would appear again the following week. This continued for six weeks. - rimco, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31It's about freakin' time... I'm so sick of people who don't even understand basic elementary school grammar.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28I'm Digging it for the children of today.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26(see logo)
- modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25They missed the #1 grammar issue here on Digg, the use of the word addicting instead of addictive. This one drives me up the wall as it's constantly used in the titles of posts.
For those of you who are saying not to digg because it just encourages the grammar nazis, this article only points out what is an obvious phenomena. Using poor grammar only makes you look bad. You become an object of ridicule because you choose to write your opinions in an open forum. It's pretty much the equivalent of wearing a pink tutu in public, you're just making yourself a target. - pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20As someone who struggles when speaking a second language, I am tolerant of people who speak English as a second language and have difficulty. Granted, on the internet it can be hard to tell who's who, but my beef is with the native English speakers who can't form a coherent sentence. It's just sloppy.
- Alphabet, on 10/12/2007, -24/+43well, I was trying to create a bad grammatical sentence without being obvious about it. But while I was typing it, I started to get confuse on what "bad word" to use.
But in all honesty, I bet half the people who read those sentences didn't realize I used the words wrong. - Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Is failing to use a capital letter to begin a proper noun one of them?
- Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17coolmos: You get a free pass if English is not your first language. The sad thing is the number of native English speakers that get these things wrong all the time.
- coolmos, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24News Flash of today: I haven't been to your elementary school.
Start writing in perfect Dutch, and i'll write perfect English. - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14It does have something to do with your education. It also has to do with your habits. For example, people who rely on Microsoft Word to capitalize their sentences often won't capitalize them outside of Word. People who don't correct their word misuse keep making the same mistakes.
That's why i'm against all the auto stuff that Word does. Spell check is good, but you can't just run it and expect everything to be right in your text. - krschuerman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13There are two large billboards near Mitchell, SD for a service station that read "24 hour toe service". My wife has always wondered who would want to do a pedicure at 2AM.
- kton25, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Here's a good grammar reference.

It has saved my dignity on a few occasions. - vandewax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11No they didn't. See # 6
A coworker was jokingly wrote me a note that said " YOUR GAY"
MY response was "MY GAY WHAT" - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I'm glad that someone finally recognised "should of".
The number of times I've actually being criticised for "should have" is astronomical. - Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11We certainly do. Someone who can barely handle the language in which they're writing (unless it's not their native language, I can accept that) should not attempt to convey complex ideas. When someone presents a piece of information on a technical subject with grammatical errors in the text it causes readers to trust the information presented to a lesser degree. For instance, if I came to you and said “I got here a equation that makes Einsteins theories work with Quantum stuff.” Would you believe me? Or would you assume I was most likely full of crap?
- The_Dude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9#8, the lay, lie one is the only one that trips me up. The rest are pretty easy and logical.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9#4: i.e. for e.g.
No: Use an anti-spyware program (i.e., Ad-Aware).
Yes: Use an anti-spyware program (e.g., Ad-Aware).
-----------------
I've always wondered what the difference was; I've always kind of assumed they were equivalent. I guess you learn something new every day. - GrimLeaper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I must allot you a digg for that. (Unfortunately, my brain has been damaged by seeing "alot" so often that I had to check the spelling of "allot".)
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I find people who learn a second language are better at grammar than native-english speakers. The reason for this is our poor education system, which does not teach us any of the fundamentals of our own language. I only learned what nouns, verbs, ad-verbs, pro-nouns, etc. were through French class.
Go Ontario education system!!!! :/ - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9If you don't know the difference between "your" and "you're," then your elementary school failed you miserably. If you have trouble with words like this, STOP yourself when you write them and don't go further until you know that it's right. This whole "well, people will understand what I mean anyway" mentality has to stop.
If you care about your message and want people to receive it positively, write it well. - grahamcase, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Actually "Your v. You're" was #6!
- diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ah, but you can do good.
Granted, the meaning of the sentence changes, but it is perfectly valid English. - TetsuoTW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Just because it's the Internet is no excuse for disregarding your own language.
If you're a non-native speaker, fair enough, English is a hard language; but if you're a native speaker of English, over the age of 12, and incapable of communicating in coherent, grammatically correct English, you should be destroyed.
Ignorance is no excuse for anything. - BlueLaser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I completely agree. I would even bet some of the kids making flagrant errors in this thread ("their" instead of "they're", "it's" vs. "its", etc.) probably don't understand they're making mistakes. They spend so much time on IM and message boards (where grammar rules are usually not important) that they've actually degraded their ability to even recognize proper grammar.
My wife knows a school teacher who said she has had kids turn in English papers that use "u" (for "you") and other IM short hand and be shocked to find out that their paper failed. - Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm with you 100%. The popularity of "IM terms" is ruining the grammatical future of the English language. I'd hand out instant F's to students if they turned in a paper with an IM short-word in it... and then write "You got an F, lol, stfu, gtfo." on their paper.
On top of that, the popularity of rap (and rap-like/rap-hybrid) music (the source of 99% of horrifying grammar) amongst all younger demographics is, I believe, and even greater problem. I'm sick of people "axe"ing me questions and using"what it is?" (not even a complete thought) as an interrogatory phrase. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7My personal most-hated mistake lies in the misuse of adverbs. YOU CANNOT DO GOOD. You can do WELL.
- Alphabet, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11@threemagic
It's fine. People aren't raised poorly. The problem is that during english class, you're only taught basic grammar. The only way you can pick up on most grammar mistakes is if you do a lot of reading. And then when you write something out, and then reread it, you'll say to yourself "wait, that doesn't sound right."
I'm sure most people won't get my joke anyway. - senfo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Another one that I didn't see on the list is the use of the word "I".
No: She went to the store with Sherry and I.
Yes: She went to the store with Sherry and me.
No: Sherry and me went to the store.
Yes: Sherry and I went to the store. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9All your base are belong to us!
- Firemeboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I had a boss who relied on spell checker far too much. He once sent out an e-mail in which he wanted to say, "Every facet in our organization will be represented." But what he actually sent out was, "Every fascist in our organization will be represented."
Nobody wanted to attend the meeting. - suppazone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Being Danish I'm not sure, but the article has a mistake as well?
No: #2: It's for its (or god forbid, its')
Yes:#2: It's for its (or God forbid, its')
Isn't God spelled with a capital G? - forumreader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It drives me absolutely crazy when people spell "ridiculous" as "rediculous." I have no idea why.
- blackhand0114, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I wish digg could have a sticky so people wouldn't have an excuse.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The then/than mistake gets on my nerves the most. Whenever someone uses then in place of than, I immediately assume the person is around 9-12 years in age. English is a second language for my wife and I have never seen her make that mistake.
- fotowca, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Don't get grammar and spelling mixed up. The red lines in office products are for spelling. Green lines are for grammar. Most people turn the grammar checker off. I know I do.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yes, the most common error I see on dig is the all-too-common "your stupid," or "your an idiot." As much as this is corrected, people still don't "get it."
That being said, I actually work with someone who commonly writes in emails such things as "we one to" for "we want to." This lady is in a position of authority, but her poor grammar and spelling make her appear child-like, so no one takes her seriously. - JoeCool1986, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Education at it's best!" - a sign for an elementary school near my house
- sud0n1m, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Technically you should spell God with a capital G, but I guess that can depend on whether you are a religious person.
- mopslik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've never understood why so many people misspell "a lot". I've never seen anybody write "alittle".
- m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Learnt is British English, you moron. Please understand that the entire Earth can access Digg if they have access to the Internet. That's they way they use it.
- bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I don't need bad grammar to make me look stupid. I do well enough on my own thanks.
- Xanin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10"Do not misunderestimate me" - George W. Bush
- jsd8cc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Note: Here's a sub-peeve. When a sentence construction begins with If, you don't need a then. Then is implicit, so it's superfluous and wordy..."
Yeah, try telling that to my computer science professor. - confluence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Discreet = subtle
