It's a form where you can post things, nothing more, nothing less, what's to hate about it? - meruru, on 09/22/2009, -2/+8It's hype backlash. Anything that gets a ton of praise in the media will get a fair dosage of hatred thrown back at it.
- TheEggAndI, on 09/22/2009, -1/+5the greatest thing about the internet is also the worse thing about the internet.
and that is, that it gives everyone a voice. which is awesome if you're a small time artist/writer/professional/business owner because now you have a world wide forum in which to get your name and your work out there. but most people are not these things, most people are not smart or creative or witty. so when presented with the same forum, they've got nothing but worhtless ***** to say. this is what twitter has encouraged. world wide ***** - FredFredrickson, on 09/22/2009, -1/+5No, it makes you a loser.
- diggbigwig, on 09/23/2009, -2/+6Most people 'hate' the hype more than the product. You can ignore the product by not using it (like most people) but you can't seem to escape the hype.
- jordanmoore, on 09/22/2009, -1/+5*10* ways, great! </s>
***** you, ***** your lists, ***** Twitter lists and lists about Twitter. - jloff, on 09/22/2009, -0/+3will change? or HAS changed? Don't see many ground-breaking predictions in this article...

Yes, because all tweets are like that.
Here are a list of my last couple of tweets. They're obviously less productive than your life must be. You'll only find 2 which is not useful in some way to the type of people I follow and that follow me, hence my bitly links have lots of hits:

# According to the latest [Zillow Market Reports], home values in Dayton decreased 15.7%. FML. FMMFL. - FredFredrickson, on 09/22/2009, -0/+2Maybe it is a waste of time, but more thought being put into it certainly can't hurt anyone.
I mean, nobody can stand it when politicians cling onto out-of-context sound bites their opponents make, so why should we move toward that ourselves?
If you want to link me to an article you liked, why do you need to use microblogging to do that? - inactive, on 09/22/2009, -2/+4for me - the best use of twitter by a business is O2 (mobile phone provider in the UK) who treat it like a customer service line and have responded to a whole bunch of my issues!
- TacMedic, on 09/22/2009, -1/+3There is nothing wrong with the concept of Twitter in my opinion. What it has done is open up the net to micro-thoughts of the general populous and not surprising you have to filter through tons of garbage to get at anything good.
As usual its not the technology its the people. - FredFredrickson, on 09/22/2009, -2/+4I hate it because it encourages people to value quantity over quality. Instead of spending time to formulate something informative, useful, and entertaining, people end up just barking little bits of pointless information at each other. It pushes society toward a mentality of instant reaction to sound (or rather text) bites. What benefits do we gain from condensing information down to chunks so small there is no room for interpretation or reflection?
And aside from that, it's nothing that couldn't be done with RSS or other existing technologies, so the explosion of people excited about is baffling. - Wuss, on 09/22/2009, -1/+3Twitter when used as Twitter is by far the stupidest popular web 2.0 site to have ever been thought into existence. I hate it, I hate people who talk about it, I hate any word that starts with "twah" sound.
Twitter, when used by people who know how to leverage it in business, is an INCREDIBLY powerful tool. I personally believe that's what it will evolve into, and also find it's profits. As much as I hate it, the article is spot on a lot of points.
Twitter good for smart business, bad for how your turds looked last night. - TheEggAndI, on 09/22/2009, -0/+2im an out of work film-school graduate. so take everything i say with a grain of salt =)
- finewine, on 09/22/2009, -0/+2I get some of the hatred, but most people's hatred is just because they don't use it. They think "oh, all you do is update your status" and then they think of MySpace and Facebook statuses. They then conclude that it's the same thing,.
That hatred, I don't understand. It's not the same thing -- I "follow" friends on Facebook, I follow colleagues and people who tweet things of interest to my work on twitter -- most of them I don't even know. It's like subscribing to updates on someone's blog.
The hatred I do understand is what @Dmilla15 and @digwigbig are talking about. I hate it when news agencies try to be hip by just dropping the word "twitter" and not even knowing what they're talking about. I especially hate it when they try to use people's tweets as support for their news stories.
It's just a problem with technology though. Everyone can do it, so everyone's presence is equally felt. - covertbadger, on 09/22/2009, -0/+2Wow, I thought there was nothing in the world with less useful content than twitter, then pow! Your comment comes along and hits a new low. Seriously, did you even think about what you were writing there, or is that just another step towards your astroturfing payment for the day?
- hivoltage815, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1Twitter is actually a useful service for businesses, bloggers, or anyone else who has a message to distribute to anyone who cares. But the other 90% of it occupied by "eating a ham sandwich" posts still minimizes its impact. Furthermore, the fact that you cannot pick and choose who of your followers gets the message takes us a step in the wrong direction in the field of internet marketing. As Google and Facebook have shown, the benefit of data collection is the ability to distribute targeted campaigns.
- finewine, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1I disagree.
I just hooked up a service where you can receive time-sensitive "rewards" (for a lack of a better word) for a popular club. The only way to receive the "secret word" is to follow them on twitter. The updates are usually sent out around prime time, so we can push marketing to them at the proper time.
Tweets will look something like this:
Special appearance by ______ tonight. $1.00 patron shots - say "froggy"
The idea is that a large number of people receive device updates. They get a message like that at, say 10pm when they're already in the area, and they grab their friends and come in.
And yes, it does work. Not only do they get an update on what's going on without having to ask around or be anywhere near the place, but they get encourage by the special discount. - brandnewx, on 09/22/2009, -3/+4Twitter will definitely change ***** into *****.
I have yet found a single reason to tweet unless I'm too bored or too angry that I just want to let some words out; otherwise, twitter is a waste of productive time to both writers and readers. Digg is better in a sense that it informs. Twitter just puts trash in your brains. - covertbadger, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1The ham-sandwich brigade are a breath of fresh air compared to the relentless self-promoters.
- supersonicjim, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1I preferred it when the Internet was not for the everyman.
- finewine, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1Well, some people use it the same, so I'm not necessarily accurate in saying that it's not. What I'm saying is, people look at twitter as facebook without any features.
in my experience, facebook is for friends, twitter is for people that you have interest in hearing from. For example, I'm not interested in any of my old highschool friends have to say about their day, or that they hate work, or tha tthey're tired today. But I am interested in useful links for my colleagues about cool software or projects, About a cool technology that's being developed, or about an upcoming conference. The people I follow (and most of the people that follow me) are software engineers/developers/architects (whatever you want to call yourself). But at the same time, I want to stay connected to my friends.
It's not really a status update, or a "what I'm doing". It's just a text box. - Dmilla16, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1I hate when news stories say "according to person x's twitter account..." and how i can't go a day without hearing twitter on television somewhere. It's a message board that celebrities figured out how to use. I don't care what you're doing every hour of the day and normally you could avoid it but when the media cites peoples twitters all the time you can't escape it.
- tyrulz, on 09/22/2009, -1/+2only celebrities and businesses actually have use for twitter....other people who use it are just doing so for vanity
- tyrulz, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1reach out to fans
- yerdaddy, on 09/22/2009, -1/+2Twitter has nothing to offer real business over conventional website interfaces and email except as another way to extend the process loop of ordinary functions and insert noise and someone else's greedy sausage fingers into your daily routine. If you feel lonely or you want an answer quickly as possible, get on the goddam phone. Anything much more important usually involves airplanes. The only thing you need Twitter to stay connected to is a stale Dum Dum sucker like banks used to give away.
- Dmilla16, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1what use could celebrities have for twitter other than for vanity?
- finewine, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1This one I agree with you on. The problem with the internet is there's no real balance. It's like public access television -- sometimes you get someone who really know what they're talking about, and sometimes you get a druggie trying to talk economics. Unfortunately, they get weighed the same. An argument could break out on digg, and you have no clue who has the PhD and who didn't even finish college -- as long as their grammar is OK.
But I'm not sure how this relates to twitter. Just don't follow someone who's information is useless, any more than you wouldn't have a conversation with someone who's a moron in real life. Use your same ***** filter. - finewine, on 09/22/2009, -1/+2@FredFredrickson
The problem is, half the time when people spend the time "formulating something", it's a waste of everyones time.
If I want to link you to an article that I found useful yesterday, why do you need to read an article reviewing the article I read?
There are still venues for those that want to blog, Twitter is used (at least by me and the people that I follow) for sharing of quick thoughts. - Charun, on 09/22/2009, -1/+1I like amazon's service twitter.com/price
DM them a title or ISBN and they will send you back a price. - nittanygrl, on 09/22/2009, -1/+1I thought we'd go forward as far as tech and social networking after Facebook, and twitter seems to have only made us go back. Maybe in 5 years we'll be teleporting (a la Obi-Wan Kenobi). Ya never know...
- E3CKen, on 09/22/2009, -5/+5Great article about Twitter that demonstrates how business can leverage technology to increase revenue, sales, marketing efforts and profits! Wonderful ideas and examples to follow.
- FredFredrickson, on 09/22/2009, -1/+1Isn't it funny that we are in an unprecedented age of information, where we are able to send and receive more information between ourselves than any people ever to walk the earth, and yet every day the information gets more and more useless and empty of anything of substance?
- ProfessorBooty, on 09/22/2009, -0/+0How is it different than Facebook status updates? I'm not a hater but I have never used Twitter.
- brandnewx, on 09/22/2009, -1/+1Answer lies in the content of what I write. You see, a tweet of "I'm at Caltex station filling up a tankful" is not equal to a Digg comment of "Digg is better in a sense that it informs" although both are at about the same length. One is about me that has nothing to do with you; therefore, the info is useless. Another is a short sentence that could provoke a debate.
Twitter is a mountain of trash. Write trash. Read trash. - inactive, on 09/22/2009, -1/+0Nothing.
Just like people who hate WoW even though it's just fine.
Like there's some secret ulterior motive that this service has to personally screw them over.
It's complaining for the sake of complaining. That and the people really can't grasp how the internet is changing life, mainly in terms of social media. First they hated the internet because it made people anti-social, now people are "too social", blah blah.
Yeah, people can misuse it and post ***** about their sandwich, but it's really just a short and simple way to connect.
TL;DR - "change is bad, me no like change", or "If you don't like it, shut up and move on already because the rest of us are just fine" - geodebug, on 09/22/2009, -3/+2Oh good gravy, not another twitter article to bring out the same old comments:
I like twitter
me no like so much
you are dumb
your a moron
yadda, yadda, yadda - JasonQpublic, on 09/22/2009, -3/+1Not a day goes by that I don't log into Twitter and tweet my tweeples. Does that make me a twit?
- Phocion55, on 09/22/2009, -3/+1I'm questioning how productive you were with your time writing this comment.
In reality, the only difference between a Digg comment and a tweet is 140 characters.....and with Twitter, you can more easily filter whose comments you want to see. - JasonQpublic, on 09/22/2009, -3/+1You don't have a sense of humor, do you?
- mister711, on 09/22/2009, -21/+16twitter is awesome! digg me down bitches

What is Digg?
