No, it won't. - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+78your first problem is you're using a VCR... or did we enter a black hole and appear in the 80s again?
- Virak, on 10/12/2007, -6/+72Nonsense! Knowing that "aaaaaaaaaa" in Japanese translates to "aaaaaaaaaa" in English has revolutionized the way I masturbate to hentai games!

- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34But there are only 2 kinds of people in the world: those that can speak English, and those that can't. (is vs. are. look it up)
- GodKiller, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33I heard that the FBI and CIA are paying a hundred thousand dollar salary to people who can translate Arabic languages.

but with knowing Japanese, you may be able to hit on that cute japanese girl in the cafe with it ;)
but I think they hit the nail on the "getting to the point" statement.. I hear too many life stories on why won't their printer work problems.. :) "well I met Jim at the party when I was 20 and have been together for 10 years.. on our tenth anniversary he bought us this computer... three years later we decided to get this printer and now everytime I print something the printer says 'Pc Load Letter'" How do i fix this?" - theoverlord, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26I wholeheartedly agree with you. More people should learn a second language.
Yes, "tech speak" is necessary in today's world, but it is something that will come about fairly naturally. We are just in a big transition period where so much tech as developed so fast, that there are lots of people who aren't wired in to think about it. Kids are growing up with this stuff and they will have it a lot easier to learn "tech speak" though I grant that people will still need to work on it.
That said, more people need to learn a second language, especially in the US. The job opportunities that are available to people who speak English plus another language(s) (especially big ones like Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, etc.) are amazing. Sure you can still get a job and make a decent living if you just speak English in the States, but if you have a second language under your belt it opens up whole new avenues that stretch across many industries. Plus you have the added benefit of beginning to understand other cultures and peoples, something that is seriously lacking in the United States today.
So learn tech speak, it is certainly needed. But please don't think that is it. There is a huge world beyond just English-speakers. And if kids in the States don't start learning a second language soon, they will one day be losing jobs to my classmates in Hong Kong who grew up speaking Cantonese, learned Mandarin from their friends, learned English in school and take Japanese classes on weekends to expand their job options.

A monoglot American, trying to play catch up and learn Chinese - ButterBuddha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23learn "tech speak"? I'm tired of hearing people talk about how they've "downloaded the internets"
- ominpotent123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20"PC load letter? what the ***** does that mean?"
- shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20"you're already 10 times more versatile than all those other bilingual show-offs."
Not to nitpick at this guy's anecdote or anything, but being a big-time techie and also a student of Japanese, I'd much sooner take the Japanese than "tech speak". I'm interning for a law firm in Japan that has a patent translation service extension, and let me tell you, there is some money to be made in the translation industry - patents or otherwise. Don't knock bilingualism. - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19There's a certain other kind of speak that'd be doubleplususeful under today's regime.
I love Big Brother. - xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Tais is *****? Who is tais?
- ForTheUnknowing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18"This program has more nested conditionals than rand()'s"
Oh crap! My libc's rand() has zero nested conditionals, even when expanding into it's subfunction!
Better learn some more "Tech Speak"(tm), and fast - orlyfactor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17@benitojuarez:
He said "cryptographically speaking" so "584e4d59c580ca10f301d53814b700da" is probably an MD5 hash.
owned. - sergeantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Tech speak isn't a language. It is just an improved vocabulary that results from learning a new job skill.
So the question is, what is a more valuable job skill, high computer skills or a second language? Well, of course the answer is it depends on what you want to do. If you live in Kansas City and be a paralegal, I would say tech skills are more important. If you want to a social worker in Chicago, I would say a foreign language is the best.
And no, learning tech speak isn't more versatile. True, it may open up way better paying jobs. But I'll take an associate position at a non-profit over a cubicle in the IT department any day. Plus, saying tech speak is more versatile kindof ignores the fact that there's a whole world outside of the States to explore - arnar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Well.. I'd say there are three kinds of people: Those who can count and those who can't.
- KyjL, on 10/13/2007, -1/+15@Pete:
No, we get it. It's just not funny anymore when you see hundreds of disgusting CS kids wear those shirts all across high school and college campuses, expecting people to go up to them and say "HAY I'M STOOPIDZ, WAT DOEZ DAT MEANS", then tell them what it is in the most elitist tone of voice they can possibly pull out of their scuzzy asses. - navitatl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Learning Hindi made me rich. I was able to recruit workers and start an outsourcing firm.
This article really is BS, nobody should discourage learning a human language. - Philluminati, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16
"French will make you sound sexier..."
So you'd rather be a geek than have sex?
Idiot! - livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Being bilingual or even trilingual is great, but good communication skills are whats most important. If you can't get your point across in any language- it doesn't count for *****.
Even Tech Speak is good when you want to sound all smart and *****- but talking to managers you have put it in to lehmens terms to get anywhere. I speak from experience. - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15No ubuwalker, what _I_ said was octal. I was commenting on people digging me down. 171157165040141162145040163157040156157164040061063063067 = Octal, using numbers 0-7, translated it reads:
you are so not 1337
584e4d59c580ca10f301d53814b700da = Hexadecimal, but it looks like gibberish to me. - Chaulis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I think I'm going to route my packets somewhere else for now.

Just the other day in a (non IT related) meeting a few people kept saying 'PING me an email on that'. I mean wtf.
Perhaps, they were referring to the ping sound you hear in Outlook when a new message arrives. - hockey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I speak English (both American and British), Australian, Pig Latin and Eubonics.

Show any woman you know "Tech Speak" and your chances for sexual encounters with them drops significantly. - wassim2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9There are many different levels of expertise for translators, and the salary is dependent on that.
- kazimir34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Quebec french does sound stupid indeed.
- kirakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Inaccurate. If the author is so convinced of what he is saying, then his article should've been in codes instead of English.

- Jarasmen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah, seriously. I'm tired of the big ***** that read some colorful computer mag and throw at me random tech words. "Hey, this file you say is an archive is an exe! My archivizer-thing cannot open these! Send it again!"
- laterallateral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7tech speak? what the ***** is that even supposed to be? As if technology was some kind of singular state... There's technology involved in garbage disposal, am I to better understand the specifics of it, knowing this "tech speak"?
If at least I knew german, I could talk about chicks with a german garbage disposal specialist over a pint.
This article borders on insanity. - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't know what you just said, but it pissses me off.
- HEDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow, to have one of your reasons be "A Worldly Perspective" and then say Bilingual persons are show offs, that makes a bunch of sense. At least 6 of your reasons could be also be used to explain why it is advantageous to learn other spoken languages. To demean linguists in the way you have shows a shallow outlook, and is merde, (***** for those techies of you who don't speak French) for the following reasons:
1. How better to gain a worldly perspective than to speak in another language, especially since you must learn some of the culture involved to learn a foreign language.
2. General Exposure to Knowledge -- wouldn't a thirst for knowledge include other's languages and perspectives, too?
3. Knowledge portability -- this one is pretty easy to see, the ability to speak Japanese makes more than just your tech knowledge portable to another language.
4. Technology is not equal to future -- Technology may open up new possibilities, or it may harken in the end of our civilization, the choice is up to us, hopefully we are not all as narrow minded as you.
5.Articulation and specification -- can you say REBOOT in japanese? how does tech speak make you more articulate with the world, other than with your weekly LAN group?
6.confidence -- you know the confidence it gives you to be able to tech speak around illiterates and know you are the only people in the room who can understand? try talking to a woman in Russian, or a man in Italian, when everyone else just speaks English, and you can talk more than just the size of your hard drive.
I do not mean to say that tech speak is not beneficial to be fluent in, just that you should not bash what you do not know, and judge not lest ye be judged - grve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6its actually a good way to filter out incompatible females :)
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4*****. Knowing legalese would be a better way to go on a purely jargon basis. So many people get good jobs from basically just understanding legalese. Tech jargon is useless unless you have at least some technical skills, but legalese will holds it own. Also, at the top, Lawyers have pretty darn nice lives, its just very few people can make the cut of learning enough about the law and also working on ones personal presentation skills at the same time.
- Wolfghost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5orlyfactor,
Maybe it is an MD5 hash, but the exact text read "To put it cryptically", not "cryptographically speaking".
"cryptically" does not equal "cryptographically" -
