- mattsidesinger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38I disagree. I actually believe that flickr improved since Yahoo!'s acquisition. I do believe the roll-out of new features is slow, but the newish geo-tagging feature is great.
- Hegemony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34Was that written by a 12 year old? The author must not have had time to proof read this article... or maybe he did and that all sounded fine to him. That would be sad.

- MagnetoWasRight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Why they won't:
1. Microsoft knows that they'll have to overpay through the nose for Yahoo.
2. Microsoft knows that acquiring and meshing two massive divisions is rarely worth the trouble.
3. Both companies are doing pretty dang well on their own. - JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25del.icio.us, Flikr, Yahoo! Widget Engine, etc. I can't think of a single service Yahoo aquired that didn't improve after the acquisition.

Is there some problem with using facts in reporting? You have to realize that sounds ridiculous. And I didn't say he's actually a 12 year old... he just writes like one. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"Think about the last ten years, and name something from that time period that has been a really big success, something to stand next to Office or Windows."
Isn't that like arguing that asides from OS X and the iPod, Apple has not done anything in the past 10 years? Yes, a lot of their products are aquisitions, but if you call things like SQL Server, .NET, IIS, Terminal Services, Exchange, IE, Direct X, WMP, Visual Studio, Defender flops then you have a pretty high bar. It really is too early to decide whether Zune is seriously going to challenge the iPod. Early indicators are certainly along the lines of not yet.
Even without the 'cash cows' of Windows and Office, they are not doing too bad for themselves. - Naga10, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10@h2d2: I'd like to introduce you to a company called "Google"

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8"1. The search algorithm"
I am of the opinion that both MS and yahoo's search algorithm is...less than impressive. If this is the number one reason why such a takeover would happen then count me out for believing such a merge would take place. - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
I wonder if the Bush Administration would allow Google to acquire Yahoo. Then again, judging from them allowing SBC to aquire AT&T as long as the wiretaps stayed in place, I'd say there's a good chance that they would allow such an acquisition to take place. A Democratic Administration + Democratic Congress would not, unless the campaign contributions were spectacular.
As much as I detest Comcast, I'd rather see them acquire Yahoo than Microsoft. Or News Corp. Or Apple. Or Disney. Hell, I wouldn't count out AT&T as a potential suitor as well. It might be in AT&T's best interest to gobble up the # 2 search company just in case Google goes ahead and bypasses their "toll fees" by using some of that dark fibre of theirs down the road.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I very much doubt MS will buy yahoo.

It is an open source experiment. I think it is a wonderful idea because it allows for discussion and adds another layer of interactivity on the web. It is still in a very early stage and so, it might not work in any browsers other than firefox and there might a lot of bugs.
I am hoping that some of you are interested and will join this project. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"The few products they've produced that have been "successful" (some of which you've listed) rest largely on the success of Windows and Office."
I would go further. Most of the items in that list would not make it to their current market position on their own merit. WMP is not bad, but it took a long time to catch up to Winamp (before AOL broke it). There is no way IE 6 for example would be the dominant browser over Firefox on merit alone. IE 7 is at least comparable in terms of tabbed browsing.
But just like Apple uses their software to drive hardware sales, Microsoft uses SQL Server to drive Windows sales. If they did not have the Windows cash cow, then you would see a POSIX based SQL Server port, but they know they can sell more software if it is Windows only. I put to you that if Microsoft were a startup, then they would not use the same methodology, as their methodology can only work with deep pockets.
"I'm not sure that deserves the label "success" anymore than someone born into wealth does. Paris Hilton is rich and famous but is she a success?"
I am not sure if that is a good example. Although these products had quite a head start with some very deep pockets that the average piece of software does not have the luxury of, these products do work well enough for most people.
It would be more like if Paris used her inherited wealth to create a very successful business. - verticaltheory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft may very well indeed offer to buy Yahoo - BUT Yahoo will never let it happen - thank god!

You can't condemn blogs universally as spam. If you only accept mainstream media as relevant, what the hell are you doing on digg?
There are many, many excellent independent blogs out there. That said, shoemoney needs to spend some of that shoe money on a copy editor."
There are many many better websites than blogs. Blogs are for people that are too dumb to design a website and therefore, not worth my time. - Rogee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What a poorly written article. How did this get to the front page?

- robdazomba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3> Even without the 'cash cows' of Windows and Office, they are not
> doing too bad for themselves.
I don't agree. The few products they've produced that have been "successful" (some of which you've listed) rest largely on the success of Windows and Office. Internet Explorer would likely have not seen the "success" it saw without riding the coattails of an operating system. No startup could have pulled that off. IE has always been a mediocre browser and it dominates only because Windows does.
There was a time when MS was really doing some great stuff but those days are over and those great things continue to keep the company afloat. I'm not sure that deserves the label "success" anymore than someone born into wealth does. Paris Hilton is rich and famous but is she a success?
Look at it this way. It takes only half a brain to figure out that Windows and Office are the two most valuable assets MS has, and yet look at how badly MS has let the two languish. And not only that, but have imposed almost arbitrary "improvements" on them to give the appearance of having some clue about how to continue managing those two products. - wtf00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1go head join force.. I'll still use google haha.. google is printed in my head, if I need info my hand automatically types google.com..
- joshjoneswas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about one reason why this will NOT happen in 2007 or any other year: Because the people who blog about this pipedream are the same people poisoning the internet with their misuses of "there" and "their"
- everfresh59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll bet anyone, that in the near future, Google will be under a microscope with the US Gov't, and that something is going to completely rip them apart. It always happens with big companies. Google is completely taking over the market, much like Microsoft did in the 90's, and like every giant that comes along, it will eventually fall apart.
As for this really dumb ass idea of Microsoft buying Yahoo, your out of your damn minds. It will never happen. - guk6kk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dudes not everyone is perfect with their english gosh.
