"When it goes on sale the XO laptop is expected to cost £268 (313 euros) and should be available in 27 EU nations as well as Switzerland, Russia and Turkey."
=$400 USD
We've had this for a while starting with the eee LAST YEAR.
misleading title
edit: LOL every other comment was made by people who havn't read the article! - chicagojack, on 11/14/2008, -2/+21how are our cell phones 4x more expensive than their computers???
- Finalreminder, on 11/15/2008, -0/+16""Do you have a $400 cell phone? Does it cook, iron, or something? ""
Actually mine does. It came with a wife attached and huge monthly bills. - neutronphaser, on 11/15/2008, -0/+14Subsidised by your network through a contract probably. It isn't unsual for a cellphone to cost $600 new.
- billjimbob, on 11/15/2008, -0/+13But does it do any of those things WELL?
Considering there are only a handful of phones that do web browsing well, I'll take that as a no. - gamben0, on 11/15/2008, -0/+10Can it run solitaire?
- jermm, on 11/15/2008, -0/+9It can run a video of Crysis...maybe...
- inactive, on 11/15/2008, -1/+10And Europe will be able to run Crysis via distributed computing.
- inactive, on 11/15/2008, -0/+7"yes"
- inactive, on 11/15/2008, -1/+8apple is happy. they can buy them and put it in a fancy case for $799
- mmittimm, on 11/15/2008, -0/+7Anyone know what OS is installed?
- GawtMilk, on 11/15/2008, -0/+7EDITOWNED
- nurbsenvi, on 11/15/2008, -1/+8I wish somebody made a phone that actually just make phone calls...
I don't need camera, internet, mp3 and games
just plain stylish thin as card 7day lasting phone
is that so much to ask? - agentzero141970, on 11/15/2008, -0/+6im sure its linux
- SadMartigan, on 11/25/2008, -0/+5Mobile phones in Europe are just as expensive as these computers, when purchased unlocked and un subsidized.
400 American bucks a piece. - mmittimm, on 11/15/2008, -0/+4Smaller devices are often more expensive to produce.
- MrSteamTank, on 11/15/2008, -1/+5It's called an oligopoly/monopoly. Living in Uruguay has showed me that cell phone service can actually be very cheap. The government owned cell phone here in Uruguay(ancel) provides cell phone service at an incredibly cheap price. 500 pesos(just under 25 bucks American) gives you approximately 7-8 hours of talking time. Text messages are a peso each and I bought a perfectly functional cell phone for under 20 bucks which I can pay as I go. Yet apparantly ancel still makes a decent amount of money even at these low low prices.
Back in Canada though it's highway robbery. I wasn't able to afford my cell phone contract and the cancellation fee was ridiculous. Pay as you go is also a rip off. Sometimes I just wish Canada had a publically owned cell phone company to keep the other ones honest. - rolf, on 11/15/2008, -0/+4"Mine has cost $50, and it have radio, mp3 player, bluetooth, camera, web browser, and a lot more of useless things."
They're probably useless because the phone is either not good at those features or the software/hardware makes it a hassle to use as such, being only good as marketing bullet points. - nrox653, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Comuting? I don't know the menign of comuting.
/misspelling - rolf, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3First off, all this aid we've been giving them for many decades now is HURTING Africa, not helping it:
http://www.spiegel.de/international/spiegel/0,1518 ...
And second, a world's population can AND has do multiple things at once - you can't enslave a free people to pursue your single pet issue/agenda. In the 1960s, the world had many problems as well, but that didn't stop America from pursuing the moon missions. - Finalreminder, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Good stuff. This'll allow much poorer families to access the internet and get help.
- astutissimo, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Yup, it runs Linux. It's most notable for the Sugar interface.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_(GUI) - rolf, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3It's funny, for the first time, I saw an eeepc at Target today with the box proclaiming it had easy to use linux while all the OLPCs seem to be signing on deals with XP installed.
Where did this total reversal of the expected in this entire situation happen happen? - frontaxle, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Vic30
- shagg187, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Pfft! Europeans don't have Dollars!
- hfactor, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Which countries do you speak of? Maximum VAT in Europe is 25%, standard is 15%.
- IAmTheGuy, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2It's a simpler version of Fedora
- MrSteamTank, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2I've been living in Uruguay and two of my nephew's have these laptops. They are pretty nice little laptops that are really sturdy and have an excellent battery life. The screen can be flipped around allowing it to be used like a book as well. The best thing about them is that they automatically connect to all the other OLPC's nearby and can connect to the internet through one.
It gives teachers a lot more tools to teach with. If the teacher wants the kids to read a particular article or use specific software all of them can simply connect to the school website and use it accordingly.
It's an absolutely excellent tool for the rural schools that are really lacking in infrastructure. - macewan, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2I'd own one for the history behind it and what it represents. Then again I'm over 25 and history means something to me. ;-p
- harrisbradley, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2It's funny it's called the 100 "Dollar" laptop, and it's sold everywhere by America.
- jamesmcm, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Because then it isn't reflected in the sales (so it looks like there is still no market for gnu/linux systems) and I would have to pay the MS tax.
- FishHammer, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2This isn't really that big of a deal. You can get a decent used laptop for that price if you go garage sale hunting or find a used hardware place. I'd be impressed if they had any horsepower in them but I seriously doubt it. Besides, they're primarily for school use. Stupid way to try to pull Diggs out of an unimpressive article.
- nrox653, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Newsflash for them: Continue selling it, and they can lower the price further.
- insomniac8400, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2"When it goes on sale the XO laptop is expected to cost £268 (313 euros) and should be available in 27 EU nations as well as Switzerland, Russia and Turkey. '
That is more expensive than an ee pc. - Archer007, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Amiga is still in legal limbo. Read the articles on Ars Technica about it.
- GawtMilk, on 11/15/2008, -1/+3I use a Nokia 6288 that was free with contract. I pay $14USD a month; it's a two-year contract.
I put Opera Mini on it. Good enough for me; as I only really use Facebook, GMail and Google on my phone. It has fast 3G service, a camera and a music player. It's all I need. I'd never spend more than $50 on a phone. The more features it has, the less battery life it has. Oh, except for games. I have tetris.
Then again, I live in Hong Kong. Regardless, I've never understood why people want such a damn expensive phone. The number of times I actually use it for things other than calling people / text messaging comes to about an hour a week. I simply have no need for a "smart phone". So many kids at my school have iPhones and Blackberrys that they just use for texting and calling people. I think they look like idiots when they hold a big brick up to their face. - MasterGrief, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2There is nothing disgusting about a low price.
- Rikkochet, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2"Considering there are only a handful of phones that do web browsing well, I'll take that as a no."
Seriously? It's fair to say that NO phones so web browsing well. Sure, Blackberry is reasonably easy to navigate, and iPhone LOOKS pretty, but they're all abysmal. EVERY "feature" phone out there effectively has no browser - they're that useless. Blackberry? Usable but pages look bad and navigating around is a chore. iPhone? Safari would be nice if it wasn't so horrendously laggy and crashing all the time. Palm? Blazer is a sad joke. IE mobile? We're getting there...
I recognize that all the companies making mobile devices are breaking ground considering what they have to work with, but let's not kid ourselves that any of the mobile browsers out there are even approaching working "well". Mobile is still crap. Usable, yes, but nowhere near what is has to be. Don't give them a free pass. - roxgod666, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2No.
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -0/+1that is good news. if you need more laptop parts information. see here:

- lemur, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1You can run it... it's probably like 30 seconds per frame but that's a decent spf.
- Frostek, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Just so you know, we're buying them under the same Give One, Get One scheme as yourselves. A good way to help out someone less fortunate.
- ssj2119, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1What are you talking about? Phones are like £400+ here offline
- neutronphaser, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Solution: Opera Mini
- TheKingInYellow, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1the usa will about to be able to buy these as well but the price is $200. this forces you to donate a computer to a kid somewhere and you get one also. not a bad deal.
- simoncallesen, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1It's not especially cheap at all. Not compared to all the other "real" netbooks that have started popping up since the OLPC was first announced. I would much, much rather spend €100 more and get an MSI Wind.
I suppose it makes sense to sell the OLPC here from a charity point-of-view, but not from a value for money point-of-view. It's just too little too late for that. - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1if you want laptop battery with discount price. go there:

UK VAT is 17.5% -
