- diggidydawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sweet, thanks for sharing. I tested it and it works...
- ((PolyAst)), on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Cool! This is 2nd only to using AIM (Trillian Pro, really) for me. :)

- norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"U.S numbers only" != ANY
no digg for you - lou2ser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anyone know a free way to send SMS to New Zealand Vodaphone customers?
- bzImage, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Only US... no digg
- Tetra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4What's the big deal? You have always been able to send a SMS via e-mail. If Google was really clever, they'd figure out what the user's cell phone provider was and select the proper hostname automatically.
- GetInLine1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"f Google was really clever, they'd figure out what the user's cell phone provider was and select the proper hostname automatically."
Been done:
teleflip.com - caluml, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0" U.S. numbers only "
You know, there's a whole 4,700 million people that don't live in the US? - Eleron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't see U.S. Cellular on this list!
- p3lEr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0US only....
- crpietschmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What about US Cellular??
http://usc.ztango.com/uscwmss - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0caluml, ge doesnt own google....
- tpsobeck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4People live outside the US?
Cut the guy a break, he showed us a good website.
Thanks Buddy` - KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0" U.S. numbers only"
Useless. - alecks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0You can probably AJAX this from your own site.... anyone look into doing that?
- unilogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Any idea if Google tracks these SMS messages? Like they do with any other service they have.
- ashevilletech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Not even US numbers only...no USCellular, no SunCom
- SentOne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"US Only No Digg"
Thanks for letting us know - drowe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So, some carriers (VZW) charge $0.02 to receive SMS messages. Does this bypass that?
- hattan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uhm it is cool to be able to sms any US carrier from one page, but most carriers already have web pages to text your friends via the web. So its nothing you couldn't do before, you just had to visit the cell phone company's website.
Also , its a bit misleading send an sms for free? The person receiving it will still have to pay for it. - why27, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Its not loading?
digg effect google?
that would be interesting! - 8086ed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11In AIM (or any client that you can log in to AIM with, such as GAIM or Trillian), type +(Number) where number is 1(area code)(7 digit number). For example; an IM to +12223334444 would send a text to (222) 333-4444.
No digg. - tifosiv122, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1OK, spare the poor guy...it's the Major Carriers in the US. Outside the US never matters, why should it now? If your in the US and your carrier isn't listed...well that's your fault for using a Mom & Pop Cell carrier.
- ziggystardust, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0There are a dozen sites that do this. Its nothing new at all.
- Hergio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Geez people, quit being jackasses about it. Why don't you bitch at him too that because you're not living in the U.S. and your country's native language isn't English he shouldn't have posted a link to the English version of the page?
- Fab1anFab1an, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0any phone!! cool checking it out!! U.S. numbers only ! BS NO DIGG
- phntm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0yeah, who cares about US
- Eschel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's amazing how many people take it as a personal slight that he mistakenly said "to any phone"! Get over it. Geez. It was probably an honest mistake. And this is a cool feature that Google is offering. Yes, yes, for those of us ABLE to benefit from it...
And maybe it will be expanded with time. - very, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Why Should we "Cut the guy a break"? The Digg Said
"Send a SMS Text Message to any phone for FREE with Google"
U.S Cell Phones Are Not the Same as any - KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you can send SMS from e-mail here is how:
http://www.tech-recipes.com/instant_messaging_tips939.html - Hergio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"So, some carriers (VZW) charge $0.02 to receive SMS messages. Does this bypass that?"Highly doubt it!
- davak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thanks. ++digg
- djhifisi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0damn, I was so excited 'till I saw the US only thing.
Ass. - tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0im not able to find it now, but oddly enough, you used to be able to go to www.starburst.com (yes the candy) and they had a free text messaging service. this was back in 2003'ish. long before google did this.
- abuser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Haven't similar (free) services been around for years?
I think there's at least one that allows you to send SMS for free via Skype (and from cell phone to Skype).
I would think that to this service provider (like Google), sending a IM2SMS or email2SMS is free (it's just an SMTP message to the cell phone company where they convert it to SMS) and anyone can do it as long as they have an agreement in place. - onebigword, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to pay $0.10 to receive a SMS message. There is a service that lets you schedule reminder text messages.
http://bitbomb.com - launchpadtt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2US Numbers. Not any number. still useful but get the headline straight. please.
- MAG1CO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Google better get this sorted for some UK usage soon!
- dawie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0 U.S. numbers only - Jackass
- pfilias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is also part of their start page, www.google.com/ig. To add it: Click Add Content in the top left and then Add More Content.
Pretty slick. - the_witch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This is not new, there are loads of sites out there that allow you to do this. Secondly don't mislabel your thread, it is not any phone, it is most US phones for free. NO DIG. nearly as bad as posting a Blog.
- BlueCockatoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The main problem with this is that when you receive the message there's no indicator of who it's from other than google... so anyone can send you these things and basically spam you for free and cause you to have to pay to receive them (if your carrier/plan charges you).
I like the services like teleflip because the message comes from your email address. The Google SMS is ripe for abuse, I think. - Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0AIM works better.
- senfo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think some Digg memers are stuck in an infinite loop.
