-- EDIT --
Downside: Bandwidth of 1GB/month... that's pretty pathetic.- lsdeath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Knew I needed to check the comments before signing up.
- Al3x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+75Ya, 1GB a month is a joke. You can put 25GB on there, and it'll take you over 2 years to get it back off.
- zeeeej, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Technically, it says 1GB per month of "downloads", not "bandwidth".
Of course, if you're actually using this for backup, you'll need to upgrade to their pay service to get your data back. - ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12http://www.rarhost.com is fairly good too, 300mb size limit PER file - unlimited files allowed, no download bandwidth limit, free member account for management.
- smileyrecords, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9http://mihd.net allows you to upload up to 1111 MB files
and no download limits
abd best of all there is a classic inteface for linux users so they can upload! - mdamico, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2If you did have 25 GB stored that you needed to retrieve all at once, its only $9.95 to pay for one month to get 25 GB download limit.
The 1 GB does seem way to low to actually use any of the suggested features though. - gyromind, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4With a cap of 25M for file-size. You're better off just downloading the Gmail GSpace extension for Firefox. Unlimited downloads, great speed, and if you run out of your 27Gigs, you just start an new email.
- olegk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7why would I pay even $50/year, when I can buy a HDD for that much?
- ajcip2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4undigg. undigg!
- loates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mydatabus.com - 5GB of storage (for free), unlimited sharing/downloads, 500MB file cap.
- AlanJuden, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6I didn't notice that...that kinda sucks!
- Dolemack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16It is just Streamload rebranded. Signed up but never use it.
- Denster23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yea I have a Streamload account right now and it still states that my limit is 3GB...I can go to upgrade my account...choose the free 25GB, and it still says limit of 3GB.
- loates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, i checked out streamload and you are right. 1GB / month is ridiculous!

I'd love to have a place to auto-sync large volumes of media & other data to from my Mac other than .mac (which is not fabulous).
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I already have a G: Drive. It's a 400GB Seagate.
Since broadband connections are so asymetrical (I get 750KB down, and only 25 KB up), I can't really be bothered to move huge amounts of data off-site. Having an external drive is just a lot easier, and if I want to share, I can just hand DVDs to my friends and family.
I do use FolderShare though. Unlimited storage and bandwidth, it's only limited by my connection.
@ jbsnyder
FolderShare is PC/Mac, and let's you create sync'ed folders on different computers.
- achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8have you seen Gmail Space firefox extension?

- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8They give you 25GB of space but only allow you 1GB of bandwidth per month.
That doesn't make any sense at all.- scooterbaga, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Come it's not that bad. It'll only take you a little over two years to use all the space.
- Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Yeah.. it would take just over two years to fill :P
...very silly.
Edit: dam. - Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It's 1GB download band, not upload - you can upload as much as you like.
- alchemista, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6What's the use of 25GB when you can only do 1GB/month? So it's going to take me over 2 years to ever upload my capacity, and then I'd have to wait another 2 years to ever download everything I uploaded?
I still haven't figured out these services yet, I'd rather put a 4GB flash drive in my pocket.- WillyMF1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Take files that are important (photos?). Encrypt them and break them into the right size and upload them for free. If your hard drive crashes, pay the money to download them again. Seems usefull to me.
- Flinty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Never been keen on giving people access to my files...
- Linh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeah, but it's good to have a remote backup. now the only thing is to figure out a way to secure it
- Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Making it secure (enough) would be easy. Just encrypt everything before you upload it. When I have to store files some where I don't trust a make a crypto loopback device, mount hat and dump all the files on there.
- Linh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@alex,
the problem is then you'd have to upload full changes. i'd like something rsync like.. block level changes. but all encrypted by me. heh... the only way i see that working is dropping my own box somewhere. or pay gobs of money for it to a reliable company. but my data isn't quite THAT important.
- DeejayLupo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Despite bandwidth limit, I do like the fact that I would at least have an offsite spot as a backup in case something happened.
And you can't knock free.
Let's see if this actually can handle the bandwidth and storage demands.. - YVReetesh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1does that ONE GB count the Uploading too?
- yalskey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No, just downloading. Some of the people here are implying that it would take 2 years to upload your data... that's not true. But it would take 2 years to download it.
- Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Oh, well thats ok then... WTF?
- Pie_Man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Just open 25 accounts...upload the full 25 gig to all of them. If you have a catastrophic failure where you need the data back you can get it.
- Flinty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Anyone made an account yet?
- joebloom, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I honestly don't see the point of 'online storage'. Hmm, why don't I just keep it on my computer? Or burn it to a CD? or on a floppy? Or a USB drive?
The only good thing with hosting files on the web is if you're going to share them for others to download for whatever reason.- lenny4422, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10People like online storage because they can use it to do offsite backups. So in the event that their computer/media is destroyed by fire/flood/other or stolen. They will still have backups of their systems. Plus they can easily access the data from any other computer connected to the tubes.
- diggitydank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Mostly agreed, joebloom...
I am not really big into the online storage services for straight backup. Maybe for a backup of a backup, but I would never trust all of my files on someone else's server. I use these services more for when I have files I need to use when I travel or files that I transfer between work and home. What happens when these companies go out of business? What happens when the Feds come and want your stuff? Is this company just going to say, "Here you go", like MSN and Yahoo? I can throw together a linux box or a networked hard drive and keep it at another location, e.g., my parents basement, and regularly send my important files there via rsync or something similar (note: I haven't done this, yet, but I am working on it). I can also keep that portable hard drive at my house to regularly back up to. While definitely possible, the chances of something taking out two locations at the same time are minuscule. - robdavy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@ diggitydank

> 1000mb files - DVD
This service, despite its free-ness, doesn't actually _fit in_ anywhere..
Also, the 1gb / month limit is a pretty massive oversight.
Another good alternative might be sourceforge.net - Your files might be accessible to all, but if you don't ever make any mention of the project, no-one is likely to snoop around too much. Of course, using sf.net for personal file storage probably goes against their usage policies, and would be an evil thing to do.
My main issue has always been keeping the most up-to-date version of files in all the various places I choose to work on files - If I work straight off the USB key that can work ok, but I prefer to have a backup copy, and if I'm working on source code, it tends to compile a _lot_ faster off the hard-drive. Creating better n-way synchronization software might be a more amiable goal than creating yet another free online storage website, methinks. - trinculo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Read the EULA for this. Not liking that fact they can use the information to monitor my usage and create a profile based on it to sell to their partners. This allows them to send me "Promotional Offers" based on that profile. Though lower lower lower down there is an option to Opt Out of this. Though I doubt anyone would actually be able to see that.
- jhooker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Have you read ANY consumer product EULA that does not say they have the right to monitor your usage and/or market your information unless you opt-out? Nice red herring post.

http://blog.streamload.com/?p=65#comments- RaistlinMajere, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Don't mod yellowhill down, he has a valid point. There are a large number of comments on that blog page describing numerous technical issues. I'd imagine the service is still new, possibly being overwhelmed right now, but if you're trusting them to back up your data, you might want to have multiple backups..
- mikaelc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Their service terms seems fair to me.
You can upload until 25GB for backing up your data. If you loose all your data, you can access the most important right away, and you can buy a 5$/month subscription to get rid of the 1GB download limitation. (Like first having to pay for your insurance when you need it).
The service seems complete identical to their MediaMax branded version, and what really annoyed me about that, is that you cannot map drives (like XDrive). It would be useful if they had proper FTP, but as of now, they only support FTP-uploading - no FTP-downloading. - americanXP, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I like that they give you enough space to actually store something. I might have to try this out.
!AMXP - ChanKaiShi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I don't undertstand the difference between AMD branded StreamLoad or just go and signup directly with Streamload, seems to me the same offering.
- theonlyvlad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm curious if they'll be able to get away with the Live! brand name, seeing how Microsoft has their web services, and probably an online storage soon to come, under the same kind of brand. Same name in competing market. Is this a lawsuit waiting to happen?

- zoom1928, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Great point about the spyware. This site is such garbage that when you go to upload it attempts to install a malicious ActiveX backdoor. It's signed from Persists Software, Inc. but of course that doesn't mean anything.

- xasx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3For all the people complaining about the 1gb d/l. If you need a real backup solution online, then you have to pay for it, bandwidth and servers are not free.
This is great since you can upload, for example, all your digital pictures. If your computer ever blew up, you can pay the money to upgrade and actually get them back. If you have a 400gb Seagate, it won't matter when a flood or tornado rips it apart. Some things need to be backed up online, and unless you have hosting that you pay for, this seems like a great solution.- tsteele93, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You have a point, but the problem with the service is that it is misleading. At first glance it looks like 25 gig free. Cool. But then there is a catch. Catches suck. So this service sucks. I use mozy now and it has 2 gig free, no catches. But I need more for my photos.
- xasx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone know any good software to upload files by ftp to your own host (pref free) automatically as backup.
- MikeRaff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think this is a great service. I can backup all my papers, resume, and business documents.
I can upload all my music and pictures from my home PC and have access to them at work - it doesn't count against you if you just want to view/use the files.
I guess I don't see what people are bitching about. Do you really need to DOWNLOAD over 1GB in files a month?- tsteele93, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well, if your hard drive crashes you probably would want to download over 1g a month. Don'tcha think?
- zoom1928, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What protocols does it support? rsync? scp? FTP? SCFTP? NCP? SMB? CODA? AFS? Well what? How in the hell are you supposed to be able to upload your files? The only big thing they're missing right now (but stated they would be adding by the end of the year) is an archiving feature. At the moment all files selected for backup are mirrored on their server.
and no i don't work for them. just a happy customer :) - smartremote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hi, try IBackup for Windows (www.ibackup.com/ibwin_new.htm). Perform interactive and scheduled backups of critical files to your online backup account with IBackup for Windows. Drag and drop files to get them backed up or to restore them. Restore the backed up data to the original location or a location of your choice.
IBackup for Windows transfers only modified portions of your files to ensure a quick backup with compression/ decompression on the fly. You can receive desktop or email notifications on your scheduled backups or restores.
Using IDrive (www.ibackup.com/IBDrive_new.htm) you can map your online IBackup account as a network drive on your computer. You can then drag and drop files to the IBackup account from the Windows explorer.
You can also try IBackup Professional, which encrypts data with a user-defined key so that the data stored on IBackup Professional servers cannot be decrypted by anybody other than you. You can `Privately Share’ data instantly with another IBackup user using the browser-based application Web-Manager.
