- Laminarcissus, on 06/02/2008, -2/+134TERRIFIC, WE'VE BEEN THERE A WEEK AND ALREADY IT'S SCRATCHED. THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE STUFF.
- jonnyuoit, on 06/02/2008, -4/+91OIL?!?
- maybeishould, on 06/02/2008, -7/+72This is incredible. Wow...I hope they find organic compounds!
- sockpuppets, on 06/02/2008, -5/+53I hope they find hot pockets.
- morphinapg, on 06/02/2008, -4/+48Just tell bush it's oil and we'll be on mars in no time
- sockpuppets, on 06/02/2008, -5/+43Bad acting?
- bnordlund, on 06/02/2008, -5/+41*Just missed the bandwagon*

- arcticblue, on 06/02/2008, -2/+20What is that on the lander's leg (left side of the pic)? Is that ice forming on it or chipped paint?
- jeremyduffy, on 06/02/2008, -3/+21No kidding. Then we can finally tell all those freaks that think Earth is the only place with life in the universe to eat it! Of course, then they'll just claim that whatever the probe found came on the probe and fell off...
- inactive, on 06/02/2008, -2/+14Holy *****, I think Mars is hiding weapons of mass destruction! We must invade for oi, err, peace!
- LomasLou, on 06/02/2008, -1/+12Obviously it's an unintentionally uncovered portion of the Salt Flats in Utah.
- McHoffa, on 06/02/2008, -0/+10I already saw it happen on Total Recall... just need to start the reactors and get the oxygen pumping
- cesclaveria, on 06/02/2008, -0/+10so, your ISP put ice on mars?
- 1337jared, on 06/02/2008, -0/+10"THE BRIDGE IS AOUGHT!"
- iainc, on 06/02/2008, -3/+12Studio floor?
- godfly, on 06/02/2008, -1/+10even pope benedict admitted that there is a possibility that there is life beyond earth.
- slammerama, on 06/02/2008, -0/+9Why waste money on these rovers when we have peeping aliens in Denver who probably already know the answers?
- Llanowar, on 06/02/2008, -1/+10Wasn't this on the frontpage yesterday?
- DIYMan2007, on 06/02/2008, -0/+9david bowie will be happy to hear this...
- McShr3dd3r, on 06/02/2008, -0/+9So the Phoenix poops ice now?
- twertyto, on 06/02/2008, -0/+9Maybe they will but that's not going to be news. We have found organic compounds on Titan, moon of Saturn and in interstellar space to name a couple and excluding some obvious things like methane which is found in abundance in the solar system.
- Stonekeeper, on 06/02/2008, -0/+8Oops! Wrong thread? :)
- Navicerts, on 06/02/2008, -0/+8Were probably digging up and terrorizing a civilization far older and wiser than our own (just very very small!).
- deusknight, on 06/02/2008, -2/+10It's not ice... it's concrete... it never went to Mars!
- MattFid, on 06/02/2008, -0/+8Or a straw.
- vkiperman, on 06/02/2008, -0/+7Excellent!
I seem to remember that when the Rover spacecraft landed there was a lot more buzz compared to Phoenix. - hayzeus, on 06/02/2008, -0/+7Looks like Phoenix dumped its coke stash.
- sg7791, on 06/02/2008, -0/+7This comment intrigues me.
- PiGuy, on 06/02/2008, -2/+9Actually it's the imprint left by the shovel on the lander's digging arm: http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5j1hvRUNc9W-3lup ...
- bobdobolena, on 06/02/2008, -2/+9Organic compounds? It looks like the cranium of a Cyberdyne Systems Series 800 Model 101 Version 2.4.
- HaMMeReD, on 06/03/2008, -0/+7This is driving me nuts, nobody gets it, this is black and white for multiple reasons.
1) Saves bandwidth
2) They are still testing
3) Color is a combination of 3 "monochrome" images, red green and blue.
4) They don't do red/green/blue, they do much more detailed capture of the optical spectrum, 12 filters from ir to uv. They probably need about 8 of those exposures to produce a accurate color representation of mars.
5) Mars landers do not have high speed broadband, they are more like slow dialup. If the first thing you do is spend 2 days transferring a 10meg frame over and it comes in overexposed you'll be kicking yourself.
The lander was not created for your personal amusement, it is perfectly capable of taking very high-resolution imagery that I wish I had available for my personal use. It's job is scientific and don't bitch about what your given. They are doing a stand-up job at nasa. - Chode2235, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6Because thats a lot of f'in data. Look at any of the photos from the rover. The color high res ones are composites of many other images taken. Also, Color photography, although pleasant to look at, is really very limited scientifically for what they are looking for.
- ChronicColonic, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6The uncaring Martians let the door on their space craft swing right open.
- Gogf, on 06/02/2008, -1/+7Very cool. Here's another view of the same thing:

- DeathRay2K, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6Heh, wrong article. :P I always wondered how people could possibly post in the wrong article, but now I see it's pretty easy, especially with generic comments like "will it blend" showing up in every thread. ;)
- aptanalogy, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6And the best part: exploding cockroaches.
- asskicker32, on 06/02/2008, -2/+7Meh, If they do find something, God probably put it there to test our faith.
- hillkiwi, on 06/02/2008, -0/+5Good to know, I was considering moving to Shaw from Telus, but I think you submitted this on the wrong article.
- MaxMWood, on 06/02/2008, -1/+6Well done sir. You put Arnold Schwarzenegger's accent into words and made me rofl.
- omgstfu, on 06/02/2008, -0/+4While you're whining about that...
Lolcats is taken all ur lands. - leetninja, on 06/02/2008, -8/+12There was a movie I once saw called Red Planet - you should all watch it sometime and see what happens on Mars when we try to inhabit it ...
- mdman, on 06/02/2008, -2/+6They use black and white for quick shots as they can be sent over quickly.. hi res pics take a lot of time to send back gto earth so they dont do those for quick views. wanna see it fast from mars? its black and white first... then hi def later
- FyUoCuK, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4NO IT WILL NOT ***** BLEND
- dafragsta, on 06/02/2008, -0/+4... and delicious.
- jhshukla, on 06/02/2008, -0/+4or stuff settled after being blown by the retro-rockets
- SuicideMouse, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4deanoplex , this is actually really interesting when you look into it. So many cultures with "gods" claim that they came from the sky, many also have drawing/carvings with visual depictions as well. Perhaps the human race is to quick to jump to the "god" conclusion rather then beings with "god-like" power/magic.
As Arthur C. Clarke put it "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
Just imagine, I'm not even going to suggest you believe or take some leap of faith. - lolwutpear, on 06/02/2008, -0/+4People are impressed by things that rove around.
- effect1, on 06/02/2008, -0/+4Life-forms. You tiny little life-forms. You precious little life-forms. Where are you? Badda ba da ba da ba!
