- DubbleA, on 06/01/2008, -0/+30Whoever is running this Twitter account has a sense of humor to post this about a NASA governed mission:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi6tk3NdfaE - JasonCox, on 06/01/2008, -0/+26Digg + Twitter = Twitter is gonna go down again
- Sainthax, on 06/01/2008, -0/+21It won't be cool till a lander has the ability to Twitter itself, and you have to admit a lander sending back "omg I'm on Mars!!1!!!1!" is a giant leap for robotkind.
- aptanalogy, on 06/01/2008, -0/+20Bill Nye, FTW. Everyone, listen up, the argument's over, someone just Nyed the thread.
- shakbhaji, on 06/01/2008, -0/+18I'm not entirely sure, but I think it has something to do with the amount of power available and the amount of data that can be sent back to Earth per cycle. Color pictures obviously have more information so sending a color photo means less useful scientific measurements and information will be sent back for a particular data cycle. That was the explanation (as best as I can remember) that Bill Nye gave when he spoke at my school.
- mareacaspica, on 05/31/2008, -2/+17great initiative
- listrophy, on 06/01/2008, -1/+16Especially since it's two-way. The person behin... erm, Phoenix itself actually answers questions posed by other twitterers.
- spavacer, on 06/01/2008, -0/+12It's things like this that keep me on digg. I am getting sick and tired of all the other hate crap.
- spiffytech, on 06/01/2008, -0/+12NASA and many other astronomic groups use black-and-white cameras because they come in much higher resolutions than color cameras. Since they don't usually need color footage they choose better specs over prettiness. When they DO need color they take a series of pictures with colored filters slid in front of the B/W camera, then overlay the colored "grayscale" images to produce a single full-color image, a lot like a newspaper
BOL listener feedback FTW! - darthdusty, on 06/01/2008, -0/+11***** even the Phoenix Lander has a Twitter account.
- subxero37, on 06/01/2008, -0/+11I never understood why pictures coming from NASA (images of deep space, not-so-deep space, other planets, et cetera) are of generally low quality.
It's like they're years ahead of themselves with certain technologies, but can't afford a few decent cameras.
Or, maybe I'm missing something (In which case, I apologize) -- are higher-quality, high-resolution color images something that the public isn't supposed to have, for some technical or political reason? - deadbaby, on 06/01/2008, -1/+12It's not that they can't afford it (although they do have tight budgets) it's really just not needed and they wouldn't have the bandwidth between the Lander and Earth to transfer massive images anyway. The primary focus of these missions is scientific research not photography.
- ayeroxor, on 06/01/2008, -3/+13"newly taken photo's of the surface of Mars"
NASA said this? Great. Not even NASA knows how the ***** to use an apostrophe. - zzz@tkz, on 06/01/2008, -1/+10It is stationary.
- NathanLoehlein, on 07/27/2009, -0/+8No, it is fixed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Phoenix
- vpisteve, on 06/01/2008, -0/+7Wow, ya think?? You totally ruined it for me, dude. You're much to smart for me.
- TSCheredar, on 06/01/2008, -2/+9One more reason why I love twitter
- Dohko_Xar, on 06/01/2008, -0/+7Forget about RTFA, don't you even bother to read the description?
- sirbeta, on 06/01/2008, -1/+7Actually in general there are a lot of high resolution images. The thing I groan about mainly is the lack of color. Many interesting high resolution images are in Black and White.
Instead of seeing images like:
http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/images/2008/details/ ...
Why not images like:
http://www.sonikstudios.net/beta/images/crater.png
The later images was basically a 30 second photoshop of the original, but there is a lot more to it that way (or at least, there would be if that were the actual color) - Kastang, on 06/01/2008, -0/+6I am glad to see more and more companies communicating with their clients/followers via a social site like Twitter.
- inactive, on 06/01/2008, -0/+6That's really nothing.
That alien recently filmed by Stan Romanek, a Colorado native, has been using Twitter for, like, months. - neko, on 06/01/2008, -0/+6What are those things on your legs?
Oh, look at that thing!
What's that thing?
Oooooooh that thing has numbers on it! - Aidje, on 06/01/2008, -0/+6Good job reading the article.
edit: Dohko_Xar raises an even better point. - CasaMan, on 06/01/2008, -0/+5he is also referring to this dutch commercial..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3r7mIDycJsE - sirbeta, on 06/01/2008, -0/+4Thanks, actually. I did not know that was what they did.
- *jooloop*, on 06/01/2008, -1/+5You're so sharp...
Did you RTFA? That's what it says!
(Except no earthbound satellite is involved I believe, though the one orbiting mars may be).
A weak PR move? I think it's brilliant! - inactive, on 06/01/2008, -0/+4Does it have a MySpace?
- getbusylivin, on 06/01/2008, -0/+4Ok. These are the reasons they designed it to be a fixed lander rather than a rover:
1. costs were reduced through reuse of earlier equipment;
2. the area of Mars where Phoenix is landing is thought to be relatively uniform and thus traveling is of less value; and 3. the equipment weight that would be required to allow Phoenix to travel can instead be dedicated to more and better scientific instruments.
- Wikipedia - brian1625, on 06/01/2008, -0/+3It'll be more like, "Twitter is down? Meanwhile..... I'm on Mars, MARS, and they can't keep Twitter online? Really? I just flew from....... nevermind"
- nemof, on 06/01/2008, -0/+3Now, lets hope the Phoenix Lander is more reliable than twitter!
- inactive, on 06/01/2008, -2/+4*****
- getbusylivin, on 06/01/2008, -1/+3Question: Is the Phoenix designed to move? In all of the pictures I see of it (Phoenix), I have never seen any wheels or tracks on it.
Phoenix - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f6/0708 ... - Am I not seeing something? - inactive, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2Well it is an abbreviation at least.
- itcoll, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2this will definitely increase traffic to twitter !!!
- bxblox, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2Hi Kevin's sock puppet
- djcreamy, on 06/01/2008, -2/+4Dugg for dissing twitter.
- veracon, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2Phoenix has more friends than me. :(
- evilregis, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2Phoenix's own words: http://twitter.com/MarsPhoenix/statuses/821352024
"The terrain around here is the same for miles in all directions. I'm going to dig into the terrain but not drive across it." - mnmleon, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2take that tv!
- bpeacock22, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Speaking of NASA, the Discovery channel started "When We Left Earth" last Sunday. Not sure if they are replaying the first two episodes, but if you are even a little interested in space, this show was amazing! NASA gave DC access to their cold storage vault and in exchange, DC remastered all the footage to HD, then edited some into this 6-episode series, complete with rare interviews. Worth a look; maybe even a buy....
