- Spawn2105, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4Just watched this thing live on the news, it was very cool to watch and kind of made up for not being born at the time of Apollo 13.
I cant wait to see the first pictures or reports on the earth / ice composition of the samples they gather from the arctic circle.
Cool Stuff! - SupaDawg, on 05/26/2008, -1/+4I was just going to digg this. TOUCHDOWN!
Props to the entire NASA team for making this happen. Now lets get these solar panels unfolded and start digging into the surface. - badmephisto, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3This is amazing news. Everything went incredibly well from what I hear. It seems that NASA has a great team of people there.
- Quake120, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Somehow I doubt the probe's mission is to plant weed on Mars, although terraforming Mars using entirely marijuana plants would be extremely profitable for the scientists.
- psevium, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Same. It felt like something special and more important, probably because we've been able to be closer especially watching it live. Hopefully we also uncover a lot of secrets and can find liquid water etc, it'd make this landing seem 10x more important. Waiting for the first pics now!
- Quake120, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2I watched it live on NASA TV. I could feel the tension in that room from here. I can only imagine how tense it must be waiting for your $400 million dollar spacecraft to land and to know whether or not you still have a job.
They were calling out the distance to the surface via the probe's radar altimeter and for a minute there, it sounded like it was going to slam into the surface at a sickening speed.
I can't wait to see pics! - krische, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Do you mean Apollo 11? That was the first mission to land on the moon. Apollo 13 was the mission where the oxygen tank blew and they barely made it back to earth alive. (Also had the Tom Hanks movie about it).
- Spawn2105, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2ahh yeah of course i meant Apollo 11, silly me what was i thinking...
- fakekevinrose, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1Does anyone know what "F!"#%G" means?
- gamerjon, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1I'm surprised that the new automated jet-pulsing propulsion system with a 33 MHz CPU analyzing the radar worked so flawlessly. *awaits for the first picture of arctic mars!*
- bastardprince, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1em the pics have been up for hours guys:

- lensman00, on 05/26/2008, -1/+2This is great news for science on Mars today, and also good news for tomorrow as the landing system is a proof-of-concept for putting much larger landers on the surface.
- legendxx, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1I can't imagine what it would be like to design one of these. I read an article that stated the majority of US/Rus probes sent to Mars either crashed or 'vanished'. Most of those the engineers have no idea what went wrong so, in-turn, they have no idea about what to re-engineer for the next attempt. It really is like taking a shot in the dark and hoping to hit something the size of a pea. Much kudos to everyone involved.. looking forward to hearing about the kinds of things we learn from Phoenix.
- Zoltair, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1Old news... Boy how does this get to the front page being so old..... ;)
Actually very good news, looks like the landing went better then expected, congrats..... - OC73, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1Incredible!
- jbenson2, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1What, no ice! The lander was supposed to land on the northern pole to find ice. So this is just another situation where the Bush administration lied.
- snareguy17, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1I hope we find monsters this time.
- Darkmush, on 05/26/2008, -1/+0Science! IT F!"#%G WORKS!
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -5/+1one small step for man, one giant leap for smoking weed
