- inactive, on 05/19/2009, -3/+116Wow, that is beautiful; the people that are moving below seem unimportant and obsolete. Space is the final frontier.
- novenator, on 05/19/2009, -4/+107My god...it's full of stars.
- inactive, on 05/19/2009, -0/+87I wish I could see that every night.
- Gr00ver, on 05/19/2009, -0/+77"Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."

- joeboy70, on 05/19/2009, -0/+49one of the best things i've seen on digg. even better than that shaved dog and the shop sign with the spelling mistake.
- Primatelord, on 05/19/2009, -0/+44This makes me hate living by or in a big city. Holy crap...
- bwjacket, on 05/19/2009, -0/+31I wanted to disagree, but I can't - technically.

Photographer pulled a savvy trick with the lens color filter (passing 656nm where a lot of the Milky Way light energy is) and also post processed the 20 second exposures, from his comments:
Contrast and brightness have been increased to make the Milky Way more stunning in the video. However, standing in the field at the Texas Star Party with dark-adapted eyes with the Milky Way overhead is a very stunning experience. Many first-time observers remark that the rising of the Milky Way looks like storm clouds coming in over the horizon. When the Milky Way is overhead it casts shadows. You can hold your hand up and move it around and see the shadow move around on the ground in front of you. It is a moving experience the first time you see the Milky Way that brightly in the sky. Fort Davis, Texas is at 5,000 feet altitude with very dark and transparent skies. - michaelrsa, on 05/19/2009, -0/+26Man I was expecting to just see a high density of stars, not that. That was amazing.
- RyanBlueThunder, on 05/19/2009, -0/+22CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!
Deep in the hearrrt of Texas! - fadetoone, on 05/19/2009, -0/+22These are the voyages...
- Gnarstache, on 05/19/2009, -0/+20I wish we had two moons
- juniorb, on 05/19/2009, -2/+21Christianity was created by people who saw this kind of sky practically every night.
- Mike10010100, on 05/19/2009, -4/+19Something like this just completely humbles me. We think we are so important in the universe, but something like this shows that we are utterly insignificant.
When someone does something selfish, or thinks only about themselves, instead of thinking about the larger picture, I think of views like this, and suddenly everything is put into perspective.
This is why logical people don't need the comfort of believing in God. God gives people the serenity to know that whatever they do, God will still be there. In that same sense, for Atheists and Deists, the stars will always be there, always keeping man in perspective.
I hope one day we will be able to see all those stars up close. That is the drive for many a scientist, to understand the universe and its machinations. For now, we can only dream. - levitron, on 05/19/2009, -0/+14Stupid sun, ruining all the stars...
The moon was shining sulkily,
Because she thought the sun
Had got no business to be there
After the day was done--
"It's very rude of him," she said,
"To come and spoil the fun!" - Taiyoryu, on 05/19/2009, -0/+14Damn you, Edison!
/jk - civicsi99, on 05/19/2009, -0/+12actually that is Venus. you can see it just before sunrise.
- darthfergie, on 05/19/2009, -0/+12I used to live out in the country, now I live in a city of 6 million. The biggest thing I miss is sitting out and watching the stars. This really made me homesick.
- gingerchic, on 05/20/2009, -0/+11Unfortunately, living on long island, or near any big city, means you maybe see five or six stars a night. I would love to see something as beautiful as the Milky Way some time in my life.
- VincentThomas, on 05/19/2009, -0/+10What, may I ask, makes nonliving mechanical matter more significant than intelligent, autonomous human beings (or even intelligent, autonomous ants, for that matter)? Either everything in the universe is significant, or none of it is at all, for it is either purposeful or meaningless accident.
That being said, the theist takes comfort in a sense of purpose and meaning, even I, the deist, who does not necessarily know what that meaning is. If the only thing out there is truly the empty void of space, then the fitting perspective would certainly be one of nihilism. It would mean we are the worthless byproduct of a cosmological accident, and that we have no intrinsic worth or value except for that which we assign ourselves.
While I do agree that a good treatment for the self absorbed human is to look out into the vast universe and appreciate the immense beauty, I don't think that the theist is incapable of this, nor is he illogical by default. When you say that the logical man does not need the comfort of believing in God, do you mean that he does not require it to function sanely? In that case, I agree with you, although it takes some intellectual dishonesty to deny the pointlessness of life that follows from such a belief in order to maintain a balanced, let alone happy or fulfilled life. However, if a God does exist, then the belief in that God would not only bring much needed comfort to man, but a point to the otherwise meaningless existence of mankind, as well as knowledge of a significant universal truth. This is why I continue to ponder (logically, mind you) the possibility that a God does exist, and no matter what conclusion I currently hold in my mind, I will continue to discuss and search until I die, because nothing is more important than that. - gemlarin, on 05/19/2009, -0/+9Someone please explain this to me. I have been out camping many times, far away from light pollution, but I could never see the milky way. How did he manage to capture it in such clarity like that?

- rblancarte, on 05/19/2009, -0/+7I have only been out to Ft Davis/McDonald's Observatory once, but the view saw so spectacular, and then only one night. God, I would love to spend some time out there.

- christoast, on 05/19/2009, -0/+6because they thought everything orbited the earth. Its not unreasonable to think that if you didn't know anything about space. it took Copernicus (who was goddamn smart) years and years to empirically prove the earth was going around the sun. And before that everyone thought the earth was flat. So we have flatness and the illusion of the earth being the center + dumb people = ***** up world view
- tom957, on 05/20/2009, -0/+6That video was very, very intense.
