- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+42Diamond was NEVER a rare commodity. The market is just artificially controlled.

- kaffein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+33I remember seeing this on /. before digg was born.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32De Beers will never let us mine it.

- alive1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29Singing Wind: Hmm. We always thought bead was worthless. We assumed our ancestors were cheated because they not have concept of ownership.
Bender: So we can have the diamond?
Singing Wind: No. We do have concept of ownership. You are free to go. Sorry about all the rustling and kidnapping.
Leela: But what about your sacred land?
Singing Wind: Land shmand! We don't wanna live on this planet. It's a dump. We'll buy new planet and act like it's sacred. With cash like this, who's going to argue? Nobody, that's who! - dantrenner, on 10/11/2007, -2/+29All of the above pictures are quite unrealistic because they have drawn a cut and polished version of the diamond in the sky which, of course, is actually in a rough, uncut and unpolished state.

- directedition, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17I don't think anyone's girlfriend would appreciate a diamond that would disrupt the gravitational balance of the planet.
- vertigoacid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13The ability to go in your backyard and just dig something up doesn't equate to rarity
You can't dig up a gallon of milk in your backyard, either - xnviews, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Of course if it were feasible to mine such a large diamond, the price of diamonds would plummet as they would no longer be a rare commodity. A woman wants a diamond from a man because it says that he can provide materially for her. It says to society "I'm married to a rich man who provides for me". For the rich it says "I'm rich and I can harness resources that the peon regular man cannot". This is the real function of a diamond. If diamonds were ubiquitous we wouldn't see news articles like this putting them on a pedestal. They'd most likely be looked on like any other large boring body in space.
- GeneralReikan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13No, they would simply assume control of it and constrict the flow of supply to control the market price. Infinite wealth. They did it in Africa.
- atariman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Guys, it's all a scam (the diamond market). They are not rare at all. I can walk into any mall anywhere in the world and come out with a diamond. What I can't do is walk into a mall and find a vinyl-caped Jawa Star Wars action figure (or Yak Face). Wanna show your love to your girl? Buy her a Yak Face action figure. It will have more resale value than that diamond.
- arjie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12First they ask for the moon, now this.
- vuke69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12They'll have YOU killed just for suggesting it.
- andrewa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13it's even sadder to see that somebody has nothing better to do with their time than fuss about whether a post is old or not.... So what?
- Kakou, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14.... Harry and Ronald? An invaluable stone? It all happens near Centaurs.....? Harry Potter is ***** real! The word prophecy is in there too! Who Knows? could that be a reference to you know who?
.....oh, God.... I need to get out of grandma's basement... and stop using three periods. - n00854180t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Actually, Sinbios is correct. Diamond is an artificially created market of scarcity. That's not to say that it is infinite, but rather that it was no where *near* the profitable market it is now, before artificial scarcity was created by DeBeers etc. It's fairly well known history.
- 0ceanic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10well hell, hopefully atleast the guy who discovered it gets to name it after his fiancé. what better engagement gift could a woman ask for? more women should be jealous of those who married geeks.
"for my engagement, my husband named the biggest diamond in existance after me." - Sazafraz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Decillion 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

- elscorcho717, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Diamonds: She'll pretty much have to.
- dicerandom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Saw this years ago, I believe that there has since been some theoretical discussions of using the crystalline lattice of the diamond to perform computations.
Imagine that - a CPU larger than most planets. Let the Marvin the robot jokes commence! - msgyrd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6FTA:
[...]indicated that such a large diamond probably would depress the value of the market, stating, “Who knows? It may be a self-deflating prophecy because there is so much of it.”
*****. Earth is already flooded with diamonds. Diamonds are literally everywhere on earth, and in significant abundance. It's the diamond cartels (DeBeers) that keep the prices retardedly high, and the legions of self-involved, jealous women who demand that the size of a rock you give them is an accurate measure of your love. Any woman who demands a months salary be placed on her finger should be gotten rid of immediately. - Bega, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8good luck collecting.
- Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Yeah... Not to mention it takes a supernova to make most everything we have with a greater atomic weight than than iron, or something like that. (Barring collapsing into neutronium, etc.)
When someone invents reasonably timed spaceflight, I'll know to dump diamond and gold stocks... - TequilaCollins, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Let's send Bruce Willis and cast up there to nuke it into a Billion-Trillion-Trillion pieces.
- krusader3z, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9I'm going to go out of my way to mention this to the Potter fans at work.
- DMU789, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Bling Bling.... It will be in the next MTV video for sure
- saigumi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Good news! That is the star I bought my grandpa from one of those "Buy a Star" things that were popular about 10 years ago.
Get away from my inhertence you bastards. - Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Nice job making a total non-sequitur.
- directedition, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Well, Sagan taught me that we are all made of 'space stuff' anyway.
- bemenaker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Montana and Louisiana are both known to have diamonds too. Someone is on the verge of opening an non DeBeers mine in Montana now. WOOHOO Fuhq DeBeers.
- Electrin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4BBC came up with a similar article 2 valentine's day ago. I spoke to an astronomy professor about it, and he told me that the pressure within a star was too great for diamonds to form. It's a commercial gimmick.
- JrGhoull, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5eh...she STILL wouldnt forgive me...

- GIMLISONOFGLOIN, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5this article was written in 2004, and made the front page a few months ago, and made front page today.
sigh @ old news making front page, again. - Rukaribe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3But they are shiney! :D
- geniusNOTatWORK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Diamonds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v0Av3ocF_A - aelias, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Considering they have the tech to create diamonds indistinguishable from the kind you pull out of the ground and for less than 1/3 the price, I question what thay're selling anymore. Blood diamond from africa, or made in a lab? Either isn't worth *****. Down with diamonds. Especially pink ones.
