Things Not To Get Offended Over, The Term "Black Hole"

- starmanjones, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1obviously it wasn't meant as a racist remark and he's an idiot if he caters to that sort of accusation. as a general rule i have nothing against stopping the use of a name or whatever if it insults some indeterminant number of people. i think it was right to discontinue "redskins." i think laws controlling this sort of thing are a bad idea.
if there was no discrimation we'd not need affirmitive action. if employers treated their workers right their would be no unions... while the circumstances in these examples is irrelevant the point is. if we would excersize common curtoesy... if racist remarks were socially unacceptable then it wouldn' occur to anyone to wonder if its racist.
an example of that is in my life is playing halo on xboxlive. i am so tired of bigoted ***** heads throwing racist ***** out that i've started telling them that they suck... and should shut the ***** up and then i tell them i don't play with racists... and leave. then i go block them so i don't have to be bothered with them again.
the same thing for fagot and gay... i know gay people and they don't act like that. the odds are at least one of the 16 people you are playing with is black and at least 1 in 10 is gay. twenty five out of a 100 women have sexually assaulted.
i heard a guy a telling a girl playing halo that he was going to come get her and ***** her... it was worse than that. if she had been assaulted that sort of thing can just flip you out. PTSD complete fear reaction. i ***** your mother last night...
geez. WTF? don't tell me you haven't enter the lobby and heard some kid obviously 10 years old using all these words. looking for approval. thinking its cool... and ok. its not. he's being warped. i know he shouldn't be playing halo but the point is that he is. and yes its always a he. xboxlive halo for me is a place i draw a line and call ***** on this crap.
the worst part is that it has the potential to allow people from all over the world to interact and know each other. be on the same team. that is a powerful interaction that could reach far past halo. halo helping with world peace. but what happens is that they hear americans talking trash and we sound just like they expect. rude, dumb, prejudiced, violent... assholes. quit tolerating it. say something so that the out group knows that all amercans are not like that.
we have to start making it socially unacceptable. that avoids laws... we should never have needed to pass hate speech laws. we did because it was less bad than the hate speech and the activities they are involved with.
another place... as long as i'm talking... is violence to women. if every woman on the planet was on the same page violence to women wouldn' t stop. its guys that do violence to women. so its guys that have to stop. we need to stop allowing jokes and lockeroom humor about rape and other things... because out of the 10 guys standing laughing 1 is very broken and sees the jokes and laughter as permission to do violence to women.
jokes and ***** behavior around violence to women should give you rhe same creepy feeling that you'd get if you listening to jokes about taking the little boy out back of the shed and ***** him... or jokes about having sex with 4 year old girl next door. its the same thing. guys need to just tell guys that its uncool. it should be taboo.
these are examples of how just the words sustains this crap. while black holes is not quit the magnitude its on the edge and the principal of courtesy and general intolerance for racism is where the problem lie. that problem produces the stupidity this guy in texas committed.
