- mistarojaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33this is also the only shot of the earth's atmosphere i've seen all month
- typo180, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I don't know...this is probably only the second or third coolest photo of Earth's atmosphere I've seen today. Today was an exceptional day though in the realm of cool photos of Earth's atmosphere. It definitely makes this week's top 100 coolest photos of...
ok, I'll stop - gr4yscale, on 10/12/2007, -9/+41digg me down, im retarded
- ghee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29I don't know about you guys but this is the coolest photo of the earth's atmosphere that I have seen all month.
- ryodoan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25In my mind Joe Kittinger is a true badass.
Oh, you just are going to go up in a baloon as high as we can possibly get you, basically there will not be any air left around you anymore, then we want you to jump out, fall through the thinnest possible air faster than many jets go, and then parachute to safely. Any problems?
Nope. - marcuschi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24That was the coolest picture of the atmosphere I saw today, because... you know, I am one to look at a lot of photos of atmospheres throughout the day.
- pronouncable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Fortunately this will still look the same after the machines attack.
- arcooke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I was going to set it as my background too.. but it was too bright for my taste. So I played around with it for a bit and came up with something that I think looks pretty cool. I also emphasized the moon quite a bit (actually replaced it with my own moon).
Use it if ya want. 1280x1024 only.
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/8264/earthnewaa4.jpg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14What is the bright dot under the moon?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@arcooke,
You have your very own moon? LOL! Where do you live, anyway? On Pluto or something? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13This reminds me of Joe Kittinger, first man in space, who took a similar photograph, except with him in it... in _1960_ http://www.glowfoto.com/static_image/26-203740L/3295/jpg/02/2007/img2/glowfoto
Read up on the guy here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Kittinger - moft, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Surprised no-one's referenced Boards of Canada's "Dayvan Cowboy" clip made from Joseph Kittinger's jump:

///got my vote for hero status
///can't wait for a digg story titled: "most annoying thread title gimmick you'll see today...no - wait, everyday!" - gklitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Gee, I didn't realize people saw more than one photo of the Earth's atmosphere every day.
- case116, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Higher Falcor, higher!
- raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@arcooke
Your version is very cool, more dramatic and all; but altering the original misses the whole point IMO. - NWVG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Reminds me of the Dreamworks opening animation.
- russellnation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8nice.
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah it is nice.. Serene..
I was kinda weirded out by the title though.. "The coolest photo of Earth's atmosphere you will see today"
Cause I look at so many photos of the Earth's atmosphere each day, this has to be the coolest...
Jimzip :D - ad0beaddict, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8my death beam! Prepare to die!
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Apparently some people disagree.
- Djerrid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Take a close look right under the moon. It looks like a star *in front of* the moon. Then take a closer look at the trail coming up beneath it. Is that a rocket?
- wazzadoin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'll say that it is the best I've seen in a year..
- screensnot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think it could be a satellite. Because it does appear to be in front of the moon.
- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it's more likely that it's a satellite. You'll also notice there are no other stars visible in the photo.
- booozeninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3if you lower your head far enough on an airplane and look up you will see this black in the sky. to different degrees depending on latitude and high atmosphere weather conditions. The reason that airplane windows are so low (top of window is at shoulder height) is to protect your eyes from UV and to stop people freaking out when they see the black of space up above. (Read this in an FAA manual)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Last I checked, we all live in the Earth's atmosphere (except for a few folks in the space station, of course), so it'll be in any photos we take. Whether it shows up or not is another matter...
- sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@arcooke
Jeez dude, why don't you show the moon cracking in half and alien spaceships bombarding the planet with plasma guns while your at it.
It's cool and all but if it doesn't look like a nice place to live :-) - M1THR4ND1R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nah, it's no match for all the other photos of the earth's atmosphere i've seen today -.- no chance
- Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Beautiful. It certainly beats the purple haze of pollution that hangs over Toronto.
- AlphaPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not just nice, epic.
- Stegg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How about "only picture of the atmosphere you will see today"? Unless there's some big looking at atmosphere picture trend I'm missing out on..
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How many pictures of the earth's atmosphere do _you_ see in a day?
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Except this is better
- HCJfilms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and the ONLY picture of the Earth's atmosphere that I'll see today...
But seriously, unbelievable! Looks like a little cloud town :) - RockBandit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here are quite a few other pics from the ISS taken with the exact same camera and lens:
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Study/ISSArt/ - shandar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@insovietrussia, Gagarin was the first man in space. Space starts at ~100 000 m, Kittinger was jumping out of the balloon at 30 000 m. The atmosphere (or rather lack off it) makes the conditions at that altitude good enough to simulate the real space.
Still a mighty impressive skydive. - KMye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He's shooting digital and there's probably a lens conversion factor of 1.3 or 1.4, so his 400mm lens would act more like a 500-600mm lens.
- gerryk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's no moon...
- insovietrussia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@soviyet
Interesting article (and photo), but I have to wonder, what evidence is there that Joseph Kittinger was actually the "first man in space".
In school we are taught that Gagarin was the first and I have yet to hear anything to the contrary. - evlpanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And for my final digg down - not to take all the wonder out of space travel but here's a random of the moon from a plane window. Just as impressive: http://www.flickr.com/photos/afishcalledishiguro/271703049/
but...
I can't recommend enough using one of those online satellite trackers to calculate when the ISS is travelling overhead. GO outside and watch it. Very cool, especially if the sun is just right, say an hour after sunset, as it can be very, very bright. - Shirokun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder where do I have to go to see such a big moon.
It's beautiful! - DatoeDakari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Think of the angle
- zai-asal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reminds me of the DreamWorks logo, sort of.
- Shaymus22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're right - out of all of the images of the atmosphere I've seen today, this IS the best :P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Being a Northern Texan, I must say that dust storm they pictured was a pain over the weekend. Even looking at it from above looks bad. Good pictures though, definitely.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Digg Censorship?
Why isn't this story in the top listing? 1,300 Diggs
http://digg.com/politics/BBC_Reported_Building_7_Had_Collapsed_20_Minutes_Before_It_Fell - Crusty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm embarrassed to say I've seen that movie about 20 times. I was a kid at the time, but still... 20 times.
- rzurad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not after Operation Dark Storm.
- DryvBy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amazing. Have you ever been on an airplane? You can see the same thing flying over Denver.
