- lewystud, on 04/26/2009, -3/+134I would like more of my tax money to go towards NASA please
- dzneill, on 04/26/2009, -1/+99I think a better gauge of American genius will be what replaces the shuttle. NASA has a tough act to follow.
- airwalkery2k, on 04/26/2009, -8/+100...From the 1970's...
- thelastcivilian, on 04/26/2009, -9/+98Indeed... a phallic symbol of American genius.
- charlietuna, on 04/26/2009, -2/+48As it ages, the shuttle is rapidly becoming more of a symbol of the US resting on its laurels. A successful return to the moon would be a symbol of US dedication to long term technological leadership in the aerospace field.
- bjxrn, on 04/26/2009, -0/+36Here is an HD video of STS 1:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0mftrFD7X4 - shdwfx, on 04/26/2009, -2/+38I think you nailed it, unintentionally.
The US has been resting on its laurels for so long, that even critics like you consider it a step forward it the moon landings would be repeated 50 years after they first happend! - inactive, on 04/26/2009, -5/+34Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr von Braun called to say go ***** yourself.
- Dustin81783, on 04/26/2009, -2/+31Hey, I was there for that launch! It was my first up close too. Beautiful.
- imagination777, on 04/26/2009, -18/+47i think the germans mite not agree with ur title
- PaulTron3000v5, on 04/26/2009, -24/+52america.
***** YEAH! - bipolarruledout, on 04/26/2009, -3/+29+5 insightful.
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -0/+26I wouldn't mind the bailouts if they went solely to NASA to develop us into a more advanced space -faring nation.
- URnotheonly1, on 04/26/2009, -3/+28do you have one?
- ArchetypeRyan, on 04/26/2009, -2/+27The USA's space exploration program is great and certainly warrants a good deal of pride, but imho the shuttle is a poor symbol of genius. This isn't because it's a poor piece of technology - most other nations can't equal it - but because we could do much better. It's more of a symbol that were riding on the coattails of the post-war generation. Funding for NASA is way down; if we want to show off America's 'genius' we need to stop wasting money on blowing **** up and invest in technology and infrastructure.
- Culyt, on 04/26/2009, -3/+27A symbol of American genius... meaning 40 years out of date?
- gamersedge, on 04/26/2009, -1/+24Yes, but our space launch system from the 70's still beats most other countries launch systems, hands down.
- Balath, on 04/26/2009, -5/+27I think the perfect symbol of American ANYTHING is something that blows up on occasion.
- Balath, on 04/26/2009, -0/+20Did any of you ever really listen to JFK's Rice Stadium speech?
When he details how we're getting to the moon, he literally says that we're going in a rocket made out of material that hasn't even been INVENTED yet.
I'm infinitely proud of that moment. Sure, let's go back to the Moon, but let's go to Mars, too. Then, after we establish ourselves there, we'll start thinking about using NASA's new ion drive to visit Proxima Centari. - snowblind113, on 04/26/2009, -1/+19Mostly Wernher von Braun.... the father of NASA
- jjb123, on 04/26/2009, -11/+28I'm conflicted, I want to digg up for the picture, but digg down for the blind patriotism.
- Phyltre, on 04/26/2009, -0/+16Seeing as virtually all American talent is just a few generations away from "foreign" anyway, I'd say it should be obvious to everyone that the entire point of American genius is the opportunity that genius, no matter where it comes from, has the opportunity to flourish here.
It's not the American people, it's the American principle of operation that is at play. - pw378, on 04/26/2009, -0/+15MOST other countries? Name any country that can currently beat America's 1970's space technology? Hell, how about America's 1960's space technology? Hint, nobody else has walked on the moon since we left it nearly a half century ago.
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -0/+15Like Wall Street.
- RapnGranny, on 04/26/2009, -11/+25Hmmm. Remind yourself again who actually developed the rocket technology that made the US space program possible. I seem to remember a lot of foreign names in that group.
Perhaps the real genius was recognizing foreign talent and allowing foreign brains and technology to influence domestic development in a case where real benefit could be realized, regardless of national "pride". - pagno, on 04/26/2009, -13/+26Cool pic, stupid title. Buried.
- Painkilla05, on 04/26/2009, -0/+13I diddnt know the Soyuz could also bring satellites and ISS nodes with it.
- Hologram0110, on 04/26/2009, -2/+14Right. All he did was rightfully point out that much American rocket science is based on work preformed by German scientist before during and after the war. So the title isn't being fair implying that America did it all on its own. No need to mention Jews, get off your high horse.
- pw378, on 04/26/2009, -2/+14Dr. Robert H. Goddard called to tell Wernher von Braun to go ***** himself.
- trafficlight, on 04/26/2009, -0/+12But a vagina-shaped spacecraft just isn't that aerodynamic.
- FKnight, on 04/26/2009, -0/+11@pietasterkid
Endeavor is only 17 years old. It hasn't reached its projected operational lifetime. Atlantis's systems were upgraded just about 10 years ago.
Additionally, as far as the computers go -- its launching into orbit, opening a door, and moving a cargo arm.
They're not playing Crysis, dumbass. When you launch a shuttle into space with half the world waiting to bitch about your slightest mistake, you use proven, tested computer systems -- not a Core 2 Duo running Ubuntu. - bipolarruledout, on 04/26/2009, -5/+16What's truly impressive is our ability to flatter ourselves.
- Megaloth, on 04/26/2009, -4/+15Human genius.
- wpyh, on 04/26/2009, -1/+12I was going to say, that photograph reminded me of the Washington Monument... which is a tribute to Bill Clinton!
- Dustmuffins, on 04/26/2009, -0/+10Blind?
- pw378, on 04/26/2009, -0/+10Von Braun was a wuss... he gave up his secrets and we never even had to water-board him.
- DirtyBinLV, on 04/26/2009, -6/+16Yes, the Shuttle program that is going to be shut down soon and outsourced to Russia is a good symbol of American genius.
- eatasandwich, on 04/26/2009, -11/+20While I understand that NASA is populated by some damn brainy people, and that the Space Shuttle is an amazing thing, don't you think that a better symbol of American genius might be something that doesn't accidentally blow up on occasion?
- Chairboy, on 04/26/2009, -0/+9Technically, the shuttle has never exploded. Challenger broke up due to aerodynamic stress when it was separated from the rupturing (not exploding) ET/SRB combo.
Columbia broke up on re-entry under blowtorching and aerodynamic stress that caused structural failure. - aggyro, on 04/26/2009, -10/+19The U.S. Space Shuttle Fleet is a symbol of German genius.
- pw378, on 04/26/2009, -1/+10Its not blind patriotism, there is a ***** picture to look at.
- Contradictions, on 04/26/2009, -0/+9If yours has that kind of burning sensation I'd be concerned.
- 666300, on 04/26/2009, -0/+8I would like to witness a space launch one day.
- lewystud, on 04/26/2009, -0/+8better go soon - only about 9 shuttle launches left - although maybe more 'space' launches
- cspinelive, on 04/26/2009, -1/+9more like 2/132... considering the total number of launches
- esteskid, on 04/26/2009, -0/+8small is very relative in this photo
- DirtPile, on 04/26/2009, -6/+14...comin' to save motha ***** space, yeah, ***** YEAH
- graemee, on 04/26/2009, -1/+9Nope
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Goddard_(scien ... - graemee, on 04/26/2009, -2/+10One word. Goddard.
- EpicSelekta, on 04/26/2009, -0/+7Space shuttle was all ours. You're thinking of the Saturn rockets, which were partially based on the German V2 rocket.
