- terminalpariah, on 10/23/2007, -1/+43Guys, I think I just solved the energy crisis! We'll build an enormous pyramid, and cover it with waterfalls...
- gcnaddict, on 10/15/2007, -1/+41Bulbasaur used Solar Beam!
It's super-effective! - inactive, on 10/23/2007, -5/+41You know why the Pentagon likes this idea?
Imagine a powerful solar powered satellite, capable of shooting a multi megawatt laser or microwave beam down to Earth. Electrical power? How about WMD power? - Jeffmr1, on 10/15/2007, -1/+37Uhhh...Sim City?
- le12484, on 10/15/2007, -0/+35Living next to the ground collector would suck.
- anagoge, on 10/15/2007, -1/+31Ion cannon ready. Select target.
- gcnaddict, on 10/15/2007, -1/+23That was the Microwave plant right?
I actually had it misfire once. It's nothing special. A few houses are completely obliterated, sure. Besides that though, nothing much. - inactive, on 10/14/2007, -1/+17Kinetic weapons are cheaper and provide better results than any microwave beam. This isn't James Bond or Star Trek.
The reason it would be great for the military is to eliminate the need to truck large quantities of fuel into areas for generators. You could simply beam down power for electricity. It can be rather difficult to get in enough fuel into very remote areas for power generators. - branjb, on 10/15/2007, -4/+20Someone's seen Die Another Day one too many times.
- mancat, on 10/15/2007, -0/+15Don't worry. The government will just turn off disasters.
- willyjlyles, on 10/15/2007, -0/+15Haven't we already had solar energy conveniently being beamed down to us for a few billion years already?
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -2/+16Ridiculously expensive. It would be cheaper/faster/produce more power for the the government to give (I use the term loosely as taxes come from us) 5 PV panels to each single unit household in the nation.
A better solution would be the Germany model of heavy government subsidies (I use the term loosely again as subsidies are taxes) for PV and let the market go to work. The less the government is involved and the more the free market comes into the play the better the results. - mcmlxxii, on 10/23/2007, -4/+13@branjb you think? I think it's a pretty serious consideration.
- mal1964, on 10/13/2007, -2/+10The Star Warms Project.
- Humptydank, on 10/14/2007, -0/+6So if it's in geosynchronous orbit, it wouldn't be able to direct the beam anywhere but directly below itself? A first year engineering student could design a mechanism that could put a spot on a moving car from geosych orbit. So isn't another way of interpreting a geosynchronous position that a single satellite could target an entire hemisphere?
And isn't the whole -- "sure it technically could be developed into a weapon , but seriously, it's just for power" the line we're currently not accepting from Iran? - grimstar, on 10/14/2007, -0/+6Does no one think of the little fishes?
- alexmensen, on 10/15/2007, -3/+8Ion Cannon Engaged.....
- Oronar, on 10/18/2007, -1/+6You've never lit things on fire with a lens and sunlight, have you?
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -0/+5I'm sure they will taste delicious when cooked by a satellite space laser.
- jhuebel, on 10/15/2007, -0/+5But when will I get to use my "Jump To Conclusions" mat? :-(
- gcnaddict, on 10/13/2007, -0/+5"Ridiculously expensive"
I'm sure the pentagon hasn't maxed out its credit line yet. - jlharrity, on 10/15/2007, -0/+5Doesn't he have to evolve to Venusaur before he can use Solar Beam?
...
wow. - Asianwaste, on 10/14/2007, -0/+5Except for the giant mechanical spider.
- python2121, on 11/07/2007, -2/+7Im thinking hammer of dawn...
- shamanlife, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4"15 launches a year" ... have you noticed NASA's budget? If the pentagon gets involved, there might more than just 15 launches per year.
- Sketchcast, on 10/15/2007, -1/+5Why the HELL would we want to invest in any space based technology? I'm so sick of NASA wasting money that could be put into corporate welfare or the new crusade. God designed this planet for us, and he gave us lots of oil for our SUV's. I say we just keep invading the middle east and killing the non-Christians over there and just keep taking their oil until all us good evangelicals get raptured up into heaven.
- Sketchcast, on 10/14/2007, -1/+5Shhhh... the republicans haven't told anyone about that yet!
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4I used to target Womp Rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters.
- kingfoot, on 10/14/2007, -1/+5while most the time i disagree with you, you have my digg on this one.
- inactive, on 10/15/2007, -0/+4It's *bullseye*, I hate grammar and spelling Nazis but misquoting Star Wars is a sin.
- ZenMojo, on 10/14/2007, -0/+4You know, this really is a home for nerds. (The same exact thoughts went through my head just now.)
- Oronar, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4Yes, and more power certainly isn't of strategic benefit...
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -0/+4and then the archeologies will launch!
- RealmDown, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4I am reminded of the immortal words of Socrates who said, "I drank what!?"
- theonlywizdum, on 10/15/2007, -0/+4My guess is that all the layers of our atmosphere lowers the amount of solar energy that reaches the ground, A platform in space would be fore efficient, but then you still need a way to get that energy to the ground.
- crgh, on 10/14/2007, -0/+4put it in the ocean
- secretivecoward, on 10/15/2007, -2/+610 billion for only 10 Mega Watts....or we could just build more nuclear power plants and get 100,000 MW. What a waste of money....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_by_coun ... - Lowrads, on 10/15/2007, -0/+4Microwaves, unlike gamma, xray, and most ultraviolet, penetrate the atmosphere fairly easily, thus do not typically add much energy to most of the gases in the atmosphere between us and outer space. The amount a solar sat would emit to receiver stations would be absolutely virtually unmeasurable compared to what the atmosphere bathes in from the furnace of the sun. It would have to be intensely focused above design specs to be able to roast cattle or passing birds.
http://www-xray.ast.cam.ac.uk/xray_introduction/Hi ... - socomoddjob, on 10/23/2007, -2/+5"A satellite capable of supplying the same amount of electric power as a modern fossil-fuel plant would have a mass of about 3000 tonnes – more than 10 times that of the International Space Station. Sending that material into orbit would require more than a hundred rocket launches. The US currently launches fewer than 15 rockets each year."
Not happening. - snowKFH, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3"The last question was asked for the first time, half in jest, on May 21, 2061, at a time when humanity first stepped into the light. The question came about as a result of a five dollar bet over highballs, and it happened this way:..."
Looks awesome, until some idiot gets his hands on it and fries us all.
L2evolve then we can play with nice things - CptCheerios, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3Wait let me get this. Government wants to build a 10MW laser or microwave generator to be able to pick a target out from space and beam energy down, and its backed by the government.
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3ok, i'm gonna need a ***** of hydrogen and some space.
- vat0r, on 10/14/2007, -1/+4Correct but it's a foot in the door towards development of a superior weapon. The military is not involved in anything unless it provides them strategic benefits.
- Ibox, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3Thats why they are trying to find a cheaper method of space travel.
- Humptydank, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3Yup, and I wouldn't mind a little more research into our Frogger of a power grid, and we wouldn't have to worry nearly as much about these new extraordinary technologies if the whole system weren't based on Pac-Man.
- fantasticFlan, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3Ok, ok, we'll surrender if you stand on this red X.
- Ibox, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3On the Moon
- romistrub, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3Why try to maintain an incredibly complex equilibrium when we could be creating artificial environments?
- andywebb95, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3Dugg for the concept of beaming energy to where you need it regardless of the time of day or weather conditions.
- shamanlife, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2If enough energy is collected by the orbiting solar array, there may be no more need for the burning of fossil fuels and thus would reduce the green house effect.
