He should have booked it during the week, when the rates are better. - dixonHill, on 06/12/2008, -0/+34Yeah, you're right. Rich people should be required to spend all of their money on altruism. They shouldn't be allowed to enjoy any of their success. It's not enough for them to donate LOTS of their money to charitable causes....they should have to donate ALL of it. I really hate it when people spend some of their own money on things they enjoy, without getting everyone else's approval first. How dare they?!?
- rahulbrown, on 06/12/2008, -4/+27Most astronauts that go to space come back with a totally changed view of earth-- seeing it as a vastly interconnected, finite, small place. If we sent all the billionaires to space, I bet we could make a better world that had greater cooperation towards our biggest challenges. Launch away!
- ivandir, on 06/12/2008, -0/+20To put things into perspective for the pessimists. Sergei Brin does wipe his ass with a toilet paper and does eat at Wendy's once in a while. Even though he is going to space there could be a slight chance the rocket could blow up ending his life.
Being rich is all nice and has a lot of perks but in the end we are all humans inside. Enjoy. - Roland1232, on 06/12/2008, -0/+18I've got $3000. Just strap me to the rocket like Wile E. Coyote.
- pitchblack16, on 06/11/2008, -2/+17ahhh the joys of being filthy stinking and filthy again rich
- ChzPlz, on 06/12/2008, -0/+13He's not being noble - he gets his pay from stock. If the company succeeds, he profits greatly. If it doesn't, he gets a buck.
As an employee of a tech company, and as a shareholder of multiple, I wish more executives took this approach. There are too many that I have seen siphon off huge salaries while their companies floundered or failed. - yojiffyskippy, on 06/12/2008, -0/+12I thought he was already in space?!??! So who's been taking all those wonderful Google Earth snap shots?
- curseoflou, on 06/12/2008, -0/+8yeah, but that's assuming they have the same character and/or morals as the men and women that comprise the astronauts we deem heros(not the cazy diaper wearing ones). anyway i agree lets launch em'
- AmaDaden, on 06/12/2008, -1/+6YEAH! Especially when there massive down payment on something could help jump start a new industry. Doesn't he realize all the unemployed people this might effect? It could create a whole new era for mankind, but at what cost? Just because mankind has been dreaming of going to space since the first time we could look up doesn't mean it's something we should actually make available to Joe Average. Sergey is such an *****.
- zephyear, on 06/12/2008, -1/+5come on
what would you honestly pick
feed a couple kids in a 3rd world country
or go into SPACE
SPACE MAN
SPACE - arunforce, on 06/12/2008, -3/+7I'm glad about the opening of space to private companies. People like Brin will help increase the bounds when Barack Obama (most likely our next president) wants to cuts NASAs funding, though in the end it's going to be futile, Americans won't allow the Chinese to beat us to Mars.
- sonicomega, on 06/12/2008, -0/+4Either that or they want to get down the the whole earth domination thing
- thedogfatherx, on 06/12/2008, -1/+5What are you trying to imply about billionaires?
- inactive, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3i thought google was building its own space fleet
- gnorth75, on 06/12/2008, -1/+4Thats a pretty brash statement considering you probably wouldnt do any different if you had his money
- corryface, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2i know, why are us ordinary folk continually mocked
- EvilDoer, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2How much pollutants is his joyride going to put in the air? I'm outraged I tell ya, outraged!!!
- inactive, on 06/12/2008, -1/+3Oh great same story different title. How many versions of this story are going to be submitted today?
. - mustafya, on 06/12/2008, -2/+4Anyone with a lick of sense knows he does that and then takes his main pay in the form of options. This limits his tax liability greatly. The highest taxes he will have to pay under current law is 15% of the value of options cashed out.
Of course what he does is use those options as collateral on extremely low interest loans. Then cashes out just enough to pay the interest while basically giving the options to the lending bank. There is another billionaire currently being prosecuted by the IRS for doing the same exact thing.
It isn't illegal but it isn't a noble thing either. - Skurt, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2Great, 50 thousand kids learning to be welfare babies. This is the problem with these countries, too many people want to throw money at the problem, and the 3rd world countries just accept the money and when it runs out, start looking for the next hand out.
Use the money to teach, build, improve their lives instead of just feeding them again and again.
You people complain about the people here on welfare roles, are the same people who say give the 3rd world welfare! How about this, *you* go to a third world country and really see how it is and then complain about 5 mil can feed 50 thousand welfare babies. - suckanucka, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2That's pretty uninformed of you to insult Sergey like this. Google doesn't do anything charitable.
- painperdu, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2All that money and he wants to go in outta space? Why What the hell is in space? Everything that a multimillionaire could ever want, booze, women, crack, is right here on Earth.
- kingUssop, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2It's cool, but I don't think I'd drop so much cash on just some orbital trip. There are a lot of adventures you can have for that money. Hell climbing Everest with guides is only like $50,000. Not to mention more mature things to do with your money. But hey, it's his money, more power to him.
- Stevethegreat, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2Why? Really...
- DivineMonkey, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2Bastard.
- screwattackthis, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2http://google.org/
Is that not enough for you? - Malarie, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2Dude Google spends millions on renewable energy: http://www.google.com/corporate/green/energy/ Give the founder a break :)
- mdmiamifl, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Congratulations to him. He had a good idea. It was successful. Good for him.
- daridave, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1I say, cheers. He was smart enough to make that money, now spending his money on his dreams sounds just about right. That's what I would do. Stop being jealous ...
- luke374, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Bowie's in space.
- wlfldy, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I remember watching the first walk on the moon and wishing I was the one up there. Haven't you ever been somewhere that it at least "appeared" that NOONE else had ever been there? How exciting! Wish I could go with him. Ok, lame comment, I know...
- kingUssop, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Yeah but what if they just see the smallness as easier to take over? ;)
- roguephon, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Wendy's? If I were Brin I would have Gordon F****** Ramsay to cook me every single meal.
- inactive, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Hey hate to tell ya but communism don't work, just ask the Russians
- Nidy1, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1"If it doesn't, he gets a buck."
Not entirely true. If he knows/thinks the company might not do well he can just sell all the stock given to him. - inactive, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Thanks goodness, we're using water jet to clean our asses here. :D
- rootsm3, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Oh how nice. Where can I sign up?
- vade79, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1If Lance Bass on n'sync fame can go to space it is insulting not to have a Google co-founder do it.
- perrym, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1The Perks of Being [Rich].
enough said. - inactive, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I would. Not to say I wouldn't spend it on myself (I'd probably buy an oceanfront mansion and a big yacht), but even compared to that, spending that much on a rocket ride is just a waste of money.
- pigtown, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1And I thought being wallflower was sweet. Man, did I screw that one up.
- inactive, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Actually, a lot of the problem is that we give them these "handouts" in forms of loans (World Bank) which they'll obviously never be able to repay. It's basically what's been happening in this country with the housing market, except on a global scale.
- TimDigg, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Whoa people hate Google now?
- Juice7, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1I could use some percs right now...
- wlfldy, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Not if you have enough of it
- prrudman, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Carbon? You do realise that he isn't driving into space right?
- ChzPlz, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Agreed - sorry - was thinking of options, not stock.
- inactive, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1How bout this, Teach them how to support them self. Remember give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. I know it's simplifying the situation, but it holds true
- inactive, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Genie: Your wish is my command.
DivineMonkey: I wish I were that Bastard! -
