- EricCiccone, on 03/27/2008, -1/+1Or Wrong Topic, because this belongs in the picture section
- finalcloud33, on 03/26/2008, -4/+2douche bag?
- inajeep, on 03/26/2008, -0/+16It certainly is pretty. Big bright lights and simple description.
- noots, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1it's a shame the stars from our galaxy get in the way (all the stars you can see in the picture are within our own galaxy). It would look unreal.
- fwertz, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1So how do we get rid of them?
- noots, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1it's a shame the stars from our galaxy get in the way (all the stars you can see in the picture are within our own galaxy). It would look unreal.
- sockpuppets, on 03/26/2008, -0/+21Of course the property value of the NGC 3576 nebula is being driven down by the abandoned cars and uncut lawn on the the NGC 3577 nebula.
- bicyclethief, on 03/26/2008, -0/+10"Engage."
- finalcloud33, on 03/26/2008, -16/+1OMG!! more interstellar clouds of dust, hydrogen gas and plasma are on Digg!
- WoollyMittens, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7Wish you were there. (and not here)
- finalcloud33, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1touche salesmen
- Jokermx, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2It's awesome how you can come up with so many different forms by looking at it. First thing that came to mind when I saw it was a ghost goat with its mouth open, with four, bright eyes, and a cape.
- Sikarian, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2First thing I came up with was an angel of sorts. The long sweeping dust clouds behind being the wings, the 2 dark clouds in the middle being a hood.
- surKaz, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1I saw an angel too... Or some biped human.. I say that because I see someone raising their right arm.. .. with the white lighting going thru/around his/her body...... and the feet.. The dark cloud at the middle of the body is a hand holding it/him/her...
It looks like someone going for a dunk..
- RealmDown, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3Gee, Opus, it looks an ice cream cone to me.

- RobotLeAwesome, on 03/26/2008, -1/+4I am sexually aroused by this.
- RealmDown, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7It's an under age nebula, so you go sit in that chair over there.

- Equinox1, on 03/26/2008, -1/+0Reminds me of the beautiful planetary systems / clusters in Mass Effect.
- WoollyMittens, on 03/26/2008, -0/+9Yeah, the universe totally ripped of that video-game. :)
- ClockworksNine, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8Every time I see one of these pictures posted, I keep wishing I had the Enterprise D or E.
:[
One day...- lostarchitect, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6only the D or E? don't limit your options man, take whatever warp capable craft you can get.
- GorfTron, on 03/26/2008, -1/+4We know what a Digger would be doing on the Enterprise and it includes the holodeck, a goat and several gerbils.
- RealmDown, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Interviewing Richard Gere ?
- directive0, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1You can keep the Galaxy or Sovereign Class ships, I'll take a Defiant.
- jgzman, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Galaxy class is a beautiful ship.
Actually, I've always been impressed with the Danube-class runabouts. Hook me up with one of those. Side benefit, no criminal masterminds from the holodeck.
- twertyto, on 03/26/2008, -13/+3Even being an astronomer, I sick of seeing APOD submissions on Digg everyday. Space is cool. Yes, we get it! 90% of you don't even get what your even looking at. I know I teach several class on the subject per semester. It's like you're all caveman or something. LOOK FIRE! OOOO LOOK FIRE AGAIN OOOO
- Phennim, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7Your comment is misplaced. It should be directed towards the person(s) who are forcing you to read this submission, not the people who like the picture.
- lostarchitect, on 03/26/2008, -0/+12you know what? some people like beautiful things and they don't need a technical explanation to appreciate them. so piss off.
- twertyto, on 03/26/2008, -8/+1If you had a proper explanation of what is occuring in this image and what it took to generate it you would probably appreicate it 100x more.
- 10lbhammer, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7then quit being a ***** and give us the "proper explanation!" either that, or stfu and gtfo!!
- surKaz, on 03/26/2008, -1/+2I support the 10 pound hammer.... with my 20 pound hammer.... No.. That didn't sound like what you think it sounds.. (ok.. it did to me, too..)
- lostarchitect, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2probably, but that doesn't mean you need to be an ass about it. if you want to explain something, go to town. some people will appreciate it. browbeating everyone does you no good.
- 10lbhammer, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7then quit being a ***** and give us the "proper explanation!" either that, or stfu and gtfo!!
- twertyto, on 03/26/2008, -8/+1If you had a proper explanation of what is occuring in this image and what it took to generate it you would probably appreicate it 100x more.
- bicyclethief, on 03/26/2008, -0/+15You'd think as an astronomer you'd be encouraging more interest in space.
- twertyto, on 03/26/2008, -9/+1I most certainly want to encourage more interest in space but that involves education not oohing and ahhing over pretty lights.
- bicyclethief, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Yeah but fascination is a good precursor to education.
- twertyto, on 03/26/2008, -9/+1I most certainly want to encourage more interest in space but that involves education not oohing and ahhing over pretty lights.
- surKaz, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3Ok.... No one is pretending to know all about what that is.. (maybe you.. I dunno).. but all they are saying is that it's cool. Strikes a certain humility in us.. or all around 'cool'-ness..
Yes, we aren't smart as you (in this regard maybe).. but that still doesn't mean it doesn't loom good..
Did I sound too apologetic/pathetic? - WoollyMittens, on 03/26/2008, -0/+9So we're not allowed to enjoy the beauty, because we are not awesome rocket scientists like you?
- twertyto, on 03/26/2008, -9/+1Yes, that exactly what I'm saying. Bloody brilliant! Now get back to solving the Collatz conjecture.
/violent sarcasm- RealmDown, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8You are a brilliant teacher in your goal to drive students of all ages toward politics instead of astronomy.
- twertyto, on 03/26/2008, -9/+1Yes, that exactly what I'm saying. Bloody brilliant! Now get back to solving the Collatz conjecture.
- sockpuppets, on 03/26/2008, -0/+9Sounds like you'd be a dick of a teacher to have.
- jordan1, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8When he says "teach a class on this every semester" what he really means is he shows pictures of stars to all his stuffed animals in his mothers basement.
- hybridcreation, on 03/26/2008, -0/+10"90% of you don't even get what your even looking at."
It's "you're", Galileo.
Too much time staring at the sky in English class?
And another thing...eat *****. - RealmDown, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7Underwear is riding up there pretty hard, huh chief?
- apetrie, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7I find it both sad and pathetic that you don't think its a good thing when other people appreciate, on any level, something you teach. As far as not knowing what we are looking at, there is a handy description underneath the picture. Of course, there is probably much more to it than that.. in fact there is much more to that region of space than you yourself could possibly know or understand.
As a musician, and someone who has studied music for a good part of my life, I hear and understand things in songs that perhaps the average person doesn't notice. I think about the composition of it, the timing of the bridge, the symmetry, the tricks and flaws of a singers voice.. etc. What I don't do though is go around insulting people or bashing their level of interest even if all they get out of it is that it sounds good, or is a catchy tune, or has a funny lyric, or whatever. A simple appreciation for beauty is not invalidated by someone else understanding the science behind it, and I can't understand your motivation for taking the attitude you are other than to feel self-important and just generally be a complete dick.- twertyto, on 03/26/2008, -6/+1"when other people appreciate"
Ok, let just put this into the proper context. I'm referring to Digg users submitting APOD every day and seeing the same childish, machismo (in some cases) responses to it in the comments section. I would hardly refer to that as appreciation. It amounts simply to banter. If anything I don't appreciate seeing my profession being reduced to jokes and idle chatter.- apetrie, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7You take yourself way, way too seriously.
That being said, consider the fact that the great majority of people who digg an article, or click on the link to view it, are not going to post in the comments. That these submissions are showing up every day and popular enough to make the front page or get this much attention should be encouraging to you. Seriously, if I could think of a stronger word than snob at the moment to apply to you, I would.
- apetrie, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7You take yourself way, way too seriously.
- twertyto, on 03/26/2008, -6/+1"when other people appreciate"
- CosmicSombrero, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Woo! A fellow astronomer!
I beg to differ however. No need to be elitist here. Next year is the International Year of Astronomy, and public interest (no matter at what level) is ALWAYS a good thing.
- falloutsyndrome, on 03/26/2008, -7/+2Space/XKCD picture of the Day secion needed. Diggers, start your bitching.
- Jamfa, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3...looks fantastic as my background.
- WoollyMittens, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1Doesn't OSX Leopard come with something like this? ;)
- musntSurfatWork, on 03/26/2008, -5/+5Looking at this SURE DOES make me realise the (HOLY MOTHER F*ING UN-)importance of Clinton, Apple, Obama, MPG, iPhone, Digg, Oil, Terror, Bush, RonPaul, Paris Hilton, WOW, Neocon, Liberal, and Xbox.
- WoollyMittens, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2Yeah, except the dust cloud won't ruin your life as easily.
- kmcknight, on 03/26/2008, -9/+2ok i'll start it off...
If I really want to see the astronomy picture of the day, I know where to find it by now... unfortunately it's on the digg frontpage. - xDynaBlade, on 03/26/2008, -2/+2Found my new desktop wallpaper.
- frozenpxl, on 03/26/2008, -2/+1For the love of God, a desktop picture with that much going on would make me want to kill myself. And no one cares that you found a new desktop.
- xDynaBlade, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Oh, I didn't realize that my comments on Digg stories had to be important to other people.
- KenCrawford, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0I am honored that you chose to use my image as your wallpaper.
Kindest Regards, Ken Crawford

- JonTheGoose, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7Astronomy truly is a humbling science.
- nickrct, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Astrology on the other hand, is retarded.
- CosmicSombrero, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0Yeah, and its damn good at crushing your soul after the umpteen years of school I'm going through for it...
Still love it though.
- WongWeiHo, on 03/26/2008, -3/+3I'm not going to lie... it kind of looks like Jesus raising his arm up to me.
- chesscat, on 03/26/2008, -3/+3Jesus got nothing to do with it. It's all a cosmic accident and random in nature. Accept it, move on, and enjoy life.
- chardar4, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0here we go again...
- Bojanglesmn, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1I saw God riding a bull personally.

- MoBASS, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2I feel really small right now.

- booshack, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1RTFA
- hybridcreation, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8I'll say it again...
Anyone can click on the APOD site and look at the picture...Digg gives us a means to discuss it (even though we don't even know what we're looking at, according to the ***** above).- DrummerAndrew, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1The only decent reason to have these on here EVERY DAY is what you just said. It would be nice if not all of them made it here though.
- lamiaconfitor, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2Gorgeous.
- manmademark, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1Falcon PUNCH!
- Narcism, on 03/26/2008, -5/+2We need the ability to individually block submissions from domain names. Noone's forcing me to visit the link (and I didn't), but I do think I'd be better off if I never saw a link from nasa.gov, xkcd (I have an rss feed for that) and lolcats.
- RealmDown, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2In general, I believe your observation correct. In this specific case, I am glad Digg already has that functionality for comments from individuals.
- Gotar, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2In the middle I see a man flipping the bird. What does this say about me?
- RealmDown, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1You like bird burgers ?
- vdog, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1I see a girl holding a black swan.
- nekochan, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1since everyone else is doing the 'seeing shapes in clouds' thing, guess i should play too.
uhm..
hunch-backed Cthulhu pushing a thick branch out of the way. - cinnabon, on 03/26/2008, -4/+1To those who hate to see APOD everyday. Please BURY it as duplicate or spam. This may help for not showing it on the front page.
- gtlogic, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1It's hard to think we're alone, but at the same time, there's no indication otherwise. Pretty disappointing.
- SuperVepr308, on 03/26/2008, -2/+1The Klingons are around Uranus heading for the Crab Nebula
- taketheleap, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1APOD = dugg blindly.
- CosmicSombrero, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I was reading some of the techniques this particular photographer employs. He's pretty masterful at image processing - I nicked some of his techniques and applied them to some of my own hobby astrophotos and they definitely made a marked improvement.
- threepm, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2I see the Grim Reaper holding an axe or knife... Lets stay out of the Delta quadrant ok?!
- DodgeCity, on 03/27/2008, -1/+1Everyone in the universe knows about God and doing the right thing to and for others.
Everyone but us selfish earthlings.
Of course... We're "special". We deserve "everything".
We all have such a rough life in paradise.
