- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53Title doesn't say it all if you have to put a little description after it.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -3/+2128 days yet it goes from Sep. 1st to the 17th? Am I missing something?
Either way, cool .gif. - dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16There is nothing wrong with the .gif. The download just stalls part of the way through and the browser keeps repeating the frames that have been downloaded. Save the whole image (eg. right click on it and save as) and then view it. URL is: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c0/Lunar_libration_with_phase2.gif
- garrettnb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17do you have to ask? of course cheese ***** blends
- daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14This is cheese dust. Don't breathe it.
- moojj, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I'm sick of seeing "Title says it" in the posts. Stop doing it.
- Manhigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Why would the other side be ligh 24/7 if it faced us? The lunar cycle is just a function of the spherical shape of the moon and its orbital period, neither of which have to do with the fact that it is tidally locked such that one side faces us.
- brewno2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6this is the other side of the moon (the one we never see), if you're curious:
http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/imgcat/hires/a16_m_3021.gif - mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm not quite sure this is from a bunch of photos. the moon looks very pixelated around the edges, looks like a computer generated sphere.
- bubza, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I believe the appearance of the wobble may be a combination of the moon's elliptical orbit (making it appear bigger as it is closer at certain times in its orbit), and the fact that it's orbit is a few degrees off from the plain of Earth's rotation (making our perspective of the moon appear to shift vertically up and down from a fixed spot on the Earth over the course of its orbit)
... or maybe I'm full of crap and the moon does wobble :) - blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Aww, have a sense of humor man. At least this article has moon in the title.
- Vironex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8All submitters bow down and adhere to the demands of moojj!
It's almost as if it actually hurt you. - loganz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4on the wikipedia caption, it mentions its "simulated".. so im guessing it might be fake.. but theres an external link to a real photo sequence of the same.
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap991108.html - DrakeTheRedEye, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Nice Find.
Visual proof that one side of the moon is always facing us. I read if the other side faced us, it would be light almost 24/7.
It looked like it wobbled though. - jmoutinho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This wobbling is called Libration. To understand it a little more and to know the source of the animation, visit Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libration
- Enasni1212, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Am I the only one that thinks that "wobble" is an awesome word?
- zadadka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It wobbles..... http://en.mimi.hu/astrology/moon_wobble.html
- m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the wobbling is called libration. It allows us to see >50% of the moon, even though only 1 side is supposed to face us.
- MacBandit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Libration
That's what the wobble is called and one lunar cycle is called Lunation, quite appropriate for Diggnation. - Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+228 days later...
there you go. - daft89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That must be the moon's bad side.
- voodoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the moon does wobble, althought very slowly, it's called libration
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libration - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+3ahh...thanks for the explanation.
- daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeh, there's something wrong with the .gif or something. I only get 5 days. Click on the pic though and it will download the full 28 days.
- Bartboy919, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9Just so some other ***** doesn't need to say it: But will it blend?

Digg This!
I just posted about 13 months per year
http://www.digg.com/general_sciences/13_Months_per_Year_Balance - BHRecon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone else notice his wiki link for moon?.. i almost spit out my drink.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1follow the moon.. Sun Cult Fx ext.

The moon does indeed wobble on its trip around the Earth...allowing us to see slightly more than 50% of its surface. Fascinating animation - thanks for posting! - thetimeisnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool,
so then this is one month of 13 total
yup. there are 13 months per year, not 12
13 x 28 = 364
plus 1 day out of time on july 25

http://13moon.com - MehYam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Imagine the dark side of the earth, and moon viewers at either edge of that dark side. Each viewer would see slightly different portions of the moon, given that they're thousands of miles apart. Wouldn't composite photos from those different angles produce the illusion of wobble, even if there were none?
- Juano11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dug up because you're a bitch...there if you hadn't burdened the rest of us with your little whiney rant, then you're dig might have counted for something....
- hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I'll see you on the dark side of the moon!!!"
You think we can see the American flag from here? - mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ahh that's a much better version loganz, nice one
- m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is on the wikipedia page for lunar libration. Also has a nice description of what is going on.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libration - mr_mechanics, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Nothing that has "The title says it all" should hit the front page. If the title says it all then don't add a description, it is redundant.
Otherwise, this is pretty cool. - nonchallant0819, on 03/31/2008, -0/+0This is a great story... found this one through http://www.google.com

- knifesideleft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm disappointed, I was half expecting a Zombie joke in this thread.
- davecor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The original caption at Wikipedia says this animation is a simulation. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libration )
Here is a real photographic time-lapse showing the same effect. Here's hoping the page has a decent server.
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap991108.html - procrust1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But a lunation, the time that elapses between successive new moons, averages 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes; a lunar month.
A year is way closer to twelve lunar months than thirteen. - Myztry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah. Besides the distinct lack of natural optical smoothing around the edges, there is also distortion at the top and bottom suggesting a computer texture drawn at a sharp angle. And during 28 days wouldn't the moon interscect the horizon from a single earthbound viewpoint. Or at least change percieved colour / brightness as the intermediate atmosphere depth change / clouds passed over, etc. Would be so much easier shot from space, which it may have been. But then we wouldn't be seeing the 'earth side' and I couldn't say whether we are seeing that or not... Looks nice anyway.
- BlackJedi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3It's cool, but I Dugg it down for one reason:
Gif leached from WIKI. Leaching sucks - I don't care who it's from. Host it yourself or not at all. - GaffleSnipe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I like it. Neat find.
- duuk2k2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Click the animation you watched to see the entire loop.
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Apparently the title didn't say it all because there's more of a description.
- svdp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0You can create your own time-lapse video's for free with PhotoLapse:

No actually thats just an advertisement
No its a bomb!
NO, its an advertisement, we made it
That is one of several leads we are pursuing - Torx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Mooninites!
*cue boston joke* - Mosssy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I only count 15 days on the date counter at the top of the image! Where's my last 13 days?
