The International Space Station from Above [PIC]
antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov — The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest human-made object ever to orbit the Earth. Last August, the station was visited and resupplied by space shuttle Discovery.

Seriously, it is.
I'm being serious.
Why are you not clicking?- altinnovation, on 04/19/2008, -8/+6Fortunately, the page loaded slow enough that I caught a "Rick Roll" title in the browser wiithout actually watching the video.
After seeing it for the 1000'th time, it's getting seriously lame. - benbfree, on 04/19/2008, -4/+5This is B.S. We gave up the last space station (Mir), we let down the last space station, we ran around, hurt and deserted it. What makes this one think things will be different?
- RogerStrong, on 04/19/2008, -2/+3Mir was designed for a fixed life span, and it had long passed it. It was worn out and breaking down all over. One of the science modules was in vacuum because of a collision. Water was pooling in zero-gravity behind some panels.
ISS will eventually wear out too, but not as soon. It's designed to allow a lot more periodic maintenance. Spare parts stores are prepositioned in several places on the outside of the station. A lot of what was learned from Skylab and Mir went into the design of ISS.- benbfree, on 04/20/2008, -1/+2I was just making a joke about the Rick Roll.

P.P.S. I can kill you with my brain - JorgeGT, on 04/19/2008, -0/+3I like when people links to the original video...

- matschig, on 04/19/2008, -8/+17This is precisely what i dreamed of as a child! I am proud to say i am actually on the waiting list to be one of the first civilians to be aboard the Space Station for a purpose other than a mission. I simply cannot wait!
- altinnovation, on 04/19/2008, -0/+7Congrats. You must be a damn-rich Digg user then, which is awesome.
- matschig, on 04/19/2008, -0/+5I'm actually employed as a statistical analyst for a German outsourcing firm. I have a moderate salary, nothing i would like to brag about of course.
- altinnovation, on 04/19/2008, -0/+3I'm quite curious as to why you're being so downmodded.... Anyway, but doesn't it cost like $20M to go up to the space station?
- marnaq, on 04/19/2008, -1/+5He's getting downmodded because his comment is useless without telling why he's on the list.
- JulyZerg, on 04/19/2008, -7/+2You're probably thinking about those 20 minute flights into orbit.
I somehow doubt that there is EVER going to be civilians on the Space Station, any more than they will let random people run around the president holding guns. - UKsHaDoW, on 04/19/2008, -0/+8There already been cillvlians on the space station. Mark shuttle worth for one.

- webcrumb, on 04/20/2008, -0/+1Is it bad when I think that this looks futuristic from a 1980s perspective? WTH don't we have /proper/ space stations now? With gravity and hydroponics and all that stuff?
- RogerStrong, on 04/20/2008, -0/+3Lack of funding and vision.
None of the candidated in the US election are pro-space. McCain plans to freeze funding, which will probably kill the new Ares/Constellation program, or at least the moon/mars part of it. The front-runner, Obama, has stated that he'll make major *cuts* in NASA funding.- arjie, on 04/20/2008, -0/+1That and the fact that we aren't all collaborating as much as we should. There is collaboration but it isn't very good. Everyone wants to protect their secrets. Such is life.
- RogerStrong, on 04/20/2008, -0/+3Lack of funding and vision.
- logiktrip, on 04/20/2008, -0/+0That's fantastic! I'm on the list to be among the first civilians to set foot on Mars! I've even got a certificate of authentication, I can't wait.

- RogerStrong, on 04/19/2008, -1/+1Actually, they've been using IBM Thinkpads.
- BryanJK, on 04/19/2008, -1/+1source?
- RogerStrong, on 04/20/2008, -1/+1Would it kill you to simply google "iss thinkpads"?
http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/space/s ...
There are several Thinkpads used on each shuttle flight.
They've been on a few Soyuz and Proton flights.
There were approximately 10 ThinkPads on Mir.
"As the 20th century drew to a close, the only notebooks certified for long-term flight on the International Space Station (ISS) were the IBM ThinkPad 760XD and the 755C. Five 76OXDs and one additional 755C were placed on ISS during the May 1999 shuttle mission (STS-96), and another seven 76OXDs and one 755C were delivered on subsequent flights. (In 2003, IBM ThinkPad A31p computers were flown to the International Space Station for in-flight testing. The A31p is scheduled to become the new ISS Portable Computer System, replacing the ThinkPad 760XD.)"

- FL33C3, on 04/19/2008, -2/+17How do we know thats "above"?
- altinnovation, on 04/19/2008, -2/+6Because it's orbiting earth?
- dagamer34, on 04/19/2008, -3/+5There is no up or down in space. And the earth is NOT the center of the universe.
Fail.- Atomic05, on 04/20/2008, -0/+3Negative, since 'up' and 'down' are relative to the nearest source of gravity and the station is affected by that force, it can be argued that the camera's position is 'above' relative to the station and the planet. For example, would you consider a plane to be below you if you were standing on the south pole?
I'm curious though, do you still think up and down would have any relevance if it was the center of the universe anyway?- manitoba98xp, on 04/20/2008, -0/+2I'd say the most influential source of gravity for the object/area in question. Certainly not the closest, since all mass has a gravitational force to all other mass.
- Atomic05, on 04/20/2008, -0/+3Negative, since 'up' and 'down' are relative to the nearest source of gravity and the station is affected by that force, it can be argued that the camera's position is 'above' relative to the station and the planet. For example, would you consider a plane to be below you if you were standing on the south pole?
- Ninjin, on 04/19/2008, -0/+10Objects in orbit around the planet are still under a strong influence from the earth's gravity. Astronauts in orbit don't experience 'true' weightlessness, they are instead freefalling towards the earth, but moving quickly enough that they don't deorbit. Therefore 'up' and 'down' in reference to the earth are still just as valid as they are on the surface of the earth.
- Danby123, on 04/20/2008, -0/+1because the enemies gate is DOWN.
- steveMacgyver, on 04/19/2008, -2/+1Hey guys I think I am too far from the space station could you get me back in.
One second guys, I think I forgot to tie myself to the rope!!- Daiken, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1"Sure thing, just throw us that camera you're holding and we'll see what we can do."
"Okay, I'm throwing the camera!" [throws] "Oh crap! I'm moving away even faster. HEEeeeeellllppp......" [silence]
"Oh well, atleast we have this awesome picture of the space station. Just imagine all the digg's we'll get!"

- kreatre2007, on 04/20/2008, -0/+1Nice shot! I keep wondering when we'll see a space station like the one in 2001: A Space Odyssey. That would be so cool!!! At our level of technology today, we could do it.
- 3leggedHorse, on 04/20/2008, -0/+1 Off topic but what the ***** is going on with the profanity filter on digg.
- Danby123, on 04/20/2008, -0/+0its messing up random words to bug losers like you who use the profanity filter.

- obxjdt, on 04/20/2008, -0/+2Can anyone tell me what countries/continents are in the photo?
I'll check back in a day or two, and see if anyone gets it right.....
If you can tell what way is north, you'll figure it out.- jasonvw, on 04/20/2008, -0/+2well to me it kind of looks like South America and Africa, but I'd expect them appear farther apart, so i don't really know.
- obxjdt, on 04/20/2008, -0/+2download & spin the pic around....The top of the picture isn't north...
