The Amateur Future of Space Travel
nytimes.com — It was in 2004 that NASA inaugurated what it calls the Centennial Challenges. The purses for the seven contests would range from the $200,000 to $2 million for the creation of a new lunar lander. The winners retain the rights to their inventions. So if it works out as planned, everybody wins. So far this has not been easy...

In west philadelfia born and raised
On the playground where I spent most of my days
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool
And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys said "we’re up in no good"
Started making trouble in my neighbourhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said "you’re moving with your aunte and uncle in bel-air"- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Wow. Way to fail at the fresh prince meme.

- Fieri, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1NASA needs to be abolished, and I would call on other industrialized nations to similiarly dismantle their national space programs.
Government space monopolies do not effectively research space exploration because there is no profit motive. They stage photo ops. We must make space exploration a business venture if humanity is ever going to sincerely start moving out.- vanza001, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0there never will be any economical reason to go to space. If you abolish Nasa you kill the possibility of anyone getting to space until we have a way to get there thats cheap enough to be worth it. That will likely never happen if there isnt someone researching it with public money. I like the idea of getting rid of nasa. The government should offer up bids to do jobs.
- Fieri, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not true. Advertising, satellites, joy trips, vacation spots, obtaining interesting information for publication in private space journals. And of course natural resources.

- Dayyve, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Bah! There is a digg story on the front page right now of a website that will flip and reverse them. It is not some arcane form of black magic as I had assumed.....
