- S1ngular1ty1, on 07/05/2009, -0/+9These events are know as gamma ray bursters (GRBs). They are believed to be caused when a massive fast rotating star collapses into a black hole. They may also be caused by merging binary neutron stars. They are the most energetic events so far discovered in our universe. They can release as much energy in a few seconds that our sun can produce in its entire life time.
Recently a fast rotating massive star (WR104) has been found that could direct a GRB at Earth if and when it collapses. The energy released in one of these bursts is unimaginable and the consequences for the Earth are uncertain.

- deepbl, on 07/05/2009, -1/+4What a weird coincidence - I just released one of my own super-energetic bursts into a supermassive black 'hole.
- zyklon, on 07/05/2009, -0/+3Very cool. I really hope they can image this phenomena properly and release the images to the public. I'd expect to see it on APOD if they did.

"His work confirms the system is a binary pair, orbiting each other at an 8 month period. Hill also confirmed the presence of a shock front between the stellar winds of WD 104 and O-type partner. And there is some very good news for Earth. It would appear the original Keck imagry may not have been as straight-forward as it seemed. Spectroscopic emission lines from the binary pair strongly suggest the system is in fact inclined 30°-40° (possibly as much as 45°) away from us.
So, Earth doesn't appear to be in the firing line of WR 104 after all…" - matadata, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1We've been observing these jets for a while, and we've had a pretty solid idea about how they work. It's not so much a discovery as it is evidence for something that we've assumed for a while.
It's like when you "discover" that you actually came from your mommy, rather than a stupid stork.
**cricket sounds continue**
Well, I dugg the article. - Mujokan, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Dugg just for linking to a vanilla press-release site rather than Daily Galaxy. (Motto: Our bloggers work hard every day to mislead you.) Then the headline would have been "Revolutionary discovery dethrones Einstein -- Earth may be destroyed".

- 2shae, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Blackholes are just Stargates made by a superiour alien civilization.
At least, that's what I heard :P - yourbrokenoven, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Ok, but we knew this over 3 years ago.
- matadata, on 07/05/2009, -2/+2ok I'll bite:
That's the wrong type of ***** to insert.
Like the one that made yo momma discover supa-energetic bursts near her giant black hole. - TheScreamer, on 07/05/2009, -2/+2Old news... I saw that porno flick at least a dozen years ago
- acegi, on 07/05/2009, -2/+2the comments following this particular article is of inferior, excrement-esque quality

- Mujokan, on 07/05/2009, -1/+1It's funny how one naturally tends to say "if it explodes" rather than "if it exploded 20,000 years ago".
- nurbsenvi, on 07/05/2009, -1/+1Merging binary neutron stars = unimmaginable force
