- Cantholditdown, on 11/06/2009, -0/+86I love these little guys!! Only suppose to last 6 months and they are still going 5 yrs on.
- sh0rtstop00, on 11/06/2009, -1/+37should've have equipped it with 26" wheels... im just sayin'
- DjBearPDX, on 11/06/2009, -0/+35They should just use the turbo boost
- jrm125, on 11/06/2009, -0/+30Mission total cost - $600 million

And they've been amazing in their work. STFU - L0phtpDK, on 11/06/2009, -0/+29FTA: "But safe ground is up to 2 metres away, and the rover will be going slowly — maybe only 1–2 centimetres a day. "
Wow... Makes you wish you could just go there and pick it up like one of your old RC cars.
I think these maps tries to help to explain what's going on:

http://marsrover.nasa.gov/mission/tm-spirit/images ... - WoundedCow, on 11/06/2009, -0/+25If we are ever to get the human race off one planet to keep our species from dying in one cataclysmic disaster, we need to keep making little guys like these to go out and look at other worlds. Go you little rovers, go!
- badenglishihave, on 11/06/2009, -4/+28The title makes it sound like a new season of Prison Break set on Mars.
- MechaMurloc, on 11/06/2009, -0/+21Big deal. Marvin was trapped in mud for 576,000,003,579 years...
- DjBearPDX, on 11/06/2009, -0/+21Welcome to Pimp Your Rover: Mars Edition

- ThanatosST, on 11/06/2009, -3/+22Dear NASA:
Do a barrel roll.
Love,
Peppy - skcolb, on 11/06/2009, -0/+15The actual cost of the original mission was $820 million, and with the extensions it's still under $1 billion. Still, a great value given all that they've accomplished.
- Ghostalker, on 11/06/2009, -0/+14If after 5 years, the Spirit becomes an immobile weather station, I think it's a very fitting retirement for it. It's still useful, and it completed its mission a long, long time ago. NASA got their money's worth over and over on these little rovers.
- Smokeydabear, on 11/06/2009, -3/+17Do a barrel roll!
- jscnet, on 11/06/2009, -0/+11May the Force be with It.
- fasda, on 11/06/2009, -1/+11I hope one of the first tasks for a human landings on mars is to fix one or upgrade one of these guys
- Caergrim, on 11/06/2009, -0/+10By that time, they will have sprouted very respectable robot whiskers and be wearing tweed blazers.
- Jektal, on 11/06/2009, -0/+10And then do a barrel roll?
- fasda, on 11/06/2009, -0/+9the cost is now down to 10 million dollars a month this has to be one of their most frugal projects
- visionviper, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8Free Spirit!
- SilentSpyder, on 11/06/2009, -1/+9You Can Do IT!
- TMLF, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6These rovers, if anything, make an argument against men ever going to mars. Look what a "low-cost" robot can do. A more advanced unit, which is being built already, the story is on digg, can do almost as much as a man, for much less money and potential for loss of life than manned flight.
- LordPhoenyx, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Captain Kirk will take care of it
- retral, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5By the time we land on mars these things will be at least 30..
- fasda, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5why would a private company do it? There's no profit in it cause all the research has no commercial value.
- pinchduck, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5They forgot to calibrate it for Mars gravity. Turbo Boost would just launch them into deep space.
- knightcrusader, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Michael, I can only use Turbo Boost once per episode!
- MacParrot, on 11/06/2009, -1/+5But they never did fix those diodes on his right side.
- doctechnical, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Press button "C" on the steering wheel. That's what Speed would do.
- legendxx, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Vince, this project has been ongoing since before you were a teenager and certainly before you were paying any taxes. Straighten up little whippersnapper.
- nigelmansell, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4the little engine that could, on mars
- Harabeck, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4From a little sand?
But seriously, yes such a mission would be risky, but they could a get a lot more science done. They can make decision immediately with a much greater awareness than a robot can achieve. And it's not like were sending prisoners out to die. Astronauts are well trained volunteers. They're well aware of the risks and are willing to face them anyway. - retral, on 11/06/2009, -1/+5From a little sand? How about lack of oxygen/food/water, extreme temperatures, psychological effects, and everything that could go wrong on a manned mission to mars?
- XenophobicAlien, on 11/06/2009, -1/+5WALL-E!
- roebeet, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3Mars Rover - "It Just Works". Man, I love this little guy.
- haikuFU, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3I hope the guy who came up with, and the guy in charge of executing this mission got huge promotions. 5 years, and tons of data. This is the kind of thing (one of the only things) that makes me envious of people who work for NASA.
- RagManX, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3I don't either, but I got my laugh from the comment, so the buries don't matter.
- idontknowpizza, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4I love Prison Break. Season 4 was so disappointing, though. Too sad they rushed to end it. :(
I hope they come back and bust Sara out of Miami. :( - solidsnake1298, on 11/06/2009, -2/+5You're right. They die instead.
- knightcrusader, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4Man I don't know why you are getting dug down. Your comment was hilarious!
- pinchduck, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3Mars Rover: Trail Rated
- Whirly5, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4Sounds like a Pixar short
- doctechnical, on 11/06/2009, -5/+8I'm a pretty big NASA critic, but once they got those little buggers on the ground they've been doing great work. The rovers are a win.
[Still would rather have seen a private company do it, but still...] - inactive, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4I think it was kind of a given the show was gonna be short-lived...it was such a narrow theme.
- Frostek, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2"Stuck in Sandy Soil for 6 Months"
Gah! This is the worst game of golf EVER! - LoudMusic, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I wonder if they're considering deploying future rovers in 'packs' with a winch system for pulling each other out of sticky situations, or lowering each other down hill sides.
- T8erT0T, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2NASA should just send monster trucks into space.
- FearlessFreep, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2So instead of following Viking, they'll be following Voyager
- FearlessFreep, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Have they figured out how or why they lasted so much longer than planned? That would be worth knowing...was it something abut the martian soil or light or atmosphere they didn't realize that allowed them to go further or recharge better or not use as much energy or...?
- johneyoung, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Spirit, start the reactor!
