Phoenix is the one that just died.
Spirit is some sort of zombie land rover destined to walk the martian soil until the end of time. - Sirocco, on 11/11/2008, -1/+16Wow, that looks amazingly clean for something that has been traversing Mars for years. I guess the "Super Deluxe on-board Scrubbing Bubbles Dispensing Unit" is still operational.
- Cglass, on 11/11/2008, -0/+13If you want to say something cool first, only to say something first, you should first click on the X in the upper right corner, then unplug the power to your computer and sit there for about 5 hours.
- avalean, on 11/11/2008, -0/+13Yes these are tire tracks, he has a rough surface area tires with large spacing so it looks like the spacing between boots.
- ferrazf, on 11/11/2008, -0/+12If you don't start somewhere it will never be within your range of technology to begin with.
- justinzagar, on 11/11/2008, -0/+12Tire tracks, maybe?
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 11/11/2008, -0/+11Different machines dude.
- scr4pper, on 11/11/2008, -0/+9Spirit rover != Phoenix lander.
- Pother, on 11/11/2008, -0/+9Because its not pointless.
1.) There's plenty of different types of engineering and science that took place to get those rovers to Mars and keep taking place supporting them and resulting from the data they are collecting.
2.) How is it any more pointless than the millions of dollars spent year after year watching two teams of apes chase and pass a melon around on a 100 yard lawn? Or how much money was spent on advertising to watch crooning and strutting on that annual TV show? Or how much did we just waste on this election?
You can find ways of belittling anything that you don't agree with or don't find interesting. - 3drage, on 11/11/2008, -0/+8Because the money could be better spent on meaningful things such as war, gay marriage banning, and the collapse of lazy non-innovative thinking!
There are many gains that society takes advantage of due to space exploration. How about you pull your head out of your ass and consider them? - Jhiaxuz, on 11/11/2008, -1/+9Until Phoenix rises from the ashes and they start a race of robots....who transform!
- byronm, on 11/11/2008, -2/+9Since when did the phoenix lander become a rover?
- NotLikely, on 11/11/2008, -0/+6Uhh, that article is about the Mars Phoenix polar lander, which has indeed ceased to operate. This article is about the Spirit rover, which is still operating. Get your spacecraft straight.

Spirit is in danger now, Dust Storm Cuts Energy Supply of NASA Mars Rover Spirit:
http://marsrovers.nasa.gov/newsroom/pressreleases/ ... - tbranham, on 11/11/2008, -1/+5Actually, I think it's the ACME (tm) Dust-devil-in-a-can that's doing all of the cleaning...
- Icelightning, on 11/11/2008, -1/+4If you don't know how much you owe NASA for your everyday life, look at the links:

http://www.techbriefs.com/spinoff - colifis, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3Opportunity is still chugging away too. Both these rovers have dealt with a great deal adversity in the nearly five years that they have been on Mars. The first few days that Spirit was on the planet, the main processor nearly shut the whole rover down down because of a bug. They've had to endure planet-wide dust storms, getting stuck in the martian soil and stuck wheels.
- nothin2g, on 11/11/2008, -2/+5Needs Mr.Fusion.
- eihwaz, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3it's a composition of may different shots take at different times. It takes minutes for the rover to re-position the camera every time, what you see is probably the result of hours of shooting.
- Shivan57, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3Frostbyt you showed your true intelligence when you said "I fund the space program **threw** my tax dollars"
- fzammetti, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2The strive for knowledge is an intrinsic characteristic that defines humanity. Without it we'd be no better than any other animal on the planet (let's put aside the debate about whether we ARE better!).
I'll paraphrase a concept from one of my favorite shows ever, Babylon 5. We have to go out into space and explore because one of the things we know with absolute certainty is that one day our local star will go nova. When that happens, it won't just take the Earth with it, it'll take the Dodgers. And Marilyn Monroe. And Coney Island and the pyramids of Giza. It'll take with it every single thing the human race has ever accomplished through the whole of history.
That is, unless we go out, leave our single home world and journey to the stars. Then there is at least a hope that when the inevitable end comes that the memory of the human race won't be wiped from the anals of universal history.
Whether you believe that's a worth goal or not in the first place you have to understand that it's a question of survival instinct. And besides any of that, sometimes knowledge, in and of itself, it all the reward you need. That's why this is important stuff and why we have to fund it. Sure, we can and should rank it in terms of relative importance to the other great issues of our day, and someone will always think this or that is a more worthy cause, but so is this. Moreover, it's something we HAVE to do. We can't wait for the next generation, or the subsequent 50th generation, to start the work. We have to do it NOW because we may not have to wait for the Sun to go nova to end it all, there's any number of things that could happen before then that we have to think about too. - reticulate, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2How difficult is it to believe we've sent probes to Mars? Why do people like you have to discount the work of hundreds of talented engineers and astronomers in order to promote your tin foil-hattery?
There's no conspiracy. Spirit is on Mars, and it's lasted 4 years. It doesn't move as nimbly as it once did (martian winter is pretty damn cold, seizing up joints) and the fact that it's still working at all is a testament to the engineering that went into it.
People like you piss me off. - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Dugg you up because I''ve seen far worse second comments and yours actually made me laugh.
Thought digg would appreciate a Transformers joke, but that's probably because they're all into Mighty Morphing Power Rangers. - tsunamitreats, on 11/11/2008, -1/+2An obascure portal reference and a conspiracy in one and I still get dugg down.... I thought I knew you guys.
- BeardDob, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Your lack of vision and sad sour disposition are disappointing. However there are many of us who do understand the wonder and excitement to be found in this kind of science. This is one of the few examples of mankind doing something worth a damn. We are rotting from within as a society and a race, apathetic and fat. Space/planetary exploration is the kind of challenge that stirs the blood and gets the mind involved.
I would think you might find some other target for your e-rage than the relatively lowly budget that NASA/JPL suffer under every year. - BeardDob, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Do a little research before you make a fool of yourself in front of others.
- n1mnul, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1I do believe we've sent probes to Mars. I don't believe the picture.
- Quietman43, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1If you have to ask why then you have no idea what science is or how it works. If people like you held sway in years past you would be reading by candle light and wondering what that streak of light was that just went across the night sky.
How long have you been a Luddite? - Suzilla, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1... not to mention the pan-handlers and squeegee dudes.
- capdos, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1good night little buddy..
- Joest23, on 11/11/2008, -1/+2That is so ***** cool.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1CUZ ITS THE FEDS FOOTPRINT WE FAKED THE LANDING I THINK YOU'RE ONTO SOMETH
- Greatmatt, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1It's a bunch of individual pictures stitched together to create the panorama. It's very likely that there was a significant amount of time between some of the individual shots resulting in brightness and shadow variations.
- BlueEverest, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1You might be right but how do you know that with so much certainty ?
- subsocial, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1For a second there I thought some of those tread marks looked like footprints. Then I decided to not be crazy.
- inactive, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1until VYGER ((=voyager)) returns looking fore the "creator". then CPT. Kerk takes the credit fore spock ,,,,,,,,,,,,,
- Princeamor, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Tire tracks don't look like foot prints! Tire tracks continue and those don't! Definitely foot prints.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1If we're "Captains" then you're the ***** we tell our sailors to swab off the deck.
- BeardDob, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1yes, yes it is .
- frostbyt, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1My disposition is the reality that people living right now could better use the money for education, medical supplies, cloths, and proper payment for services. I am realist. It saddens me to see reports where millions and millions of dollars are spent to visit a dead rock when people are dying of starvation right here on our planet. You have to set your priorities or you will lose sight of what is important to you.
We have all the data we need from Mars. Right now we need to tighten our belts and cut wasteful spending and put the money where it needs to be.
So let me ask you this. If you only had $100 to your name and you really wanted to visit six flags, but you also needed to eat for that week, what would you pick? - Suzilla, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1Martians forgot to wipe their feet?
- BeardDob, on 11/11/2008, -0/+0...
- ThreeHives, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1ZOMG ITS A HOAX!!1!
tires tracks, not footprints - bblande, on 11/11/2008, -10/+10The Decepticon on Mars will end Spirit's reign once and for all.
- frostbyt, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1You like finding typos?
- crimsonkage, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1O.O ohhh the irony it burns.
- frostbyt, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1"I would think you might find some other target for your e-rage than the relatively lowly budget that NASA/JPL suffer under every year."
No reason to get all Trollish on me. - BeardDob, on 11/11/2008, -0/+0@BlueEverest, Princeamor
Stop already there are enough stupid people in my daily experience as it is. - Princeamor, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1not the same one buddy... it doesn't have footprints..
