- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46I think he deserves it for all the work he's done in the field.
- punchingjudy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31It's nice to see someone going into space that deserves it. When Lance Bass was supposed to be going up, it depressed the hell out of me.
- hpkomic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27I didn't think his health could allow for space flight. But hell, if anyone needs to go to space, it's him. Dugg.
- polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21This is something he wanted for quite some time. It is nice to see he gets to do it.
- jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@griz
don't respond to him. just block. that way he stays off your screen and your comments unrelated to the topic stay off my screen. and it is faster too. - bwjacket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Geeze oh man, some guys get all the luck...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17oh yeah
who's the man
boom..sha kala kala
boom..sha kala kala
boom - Dested, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14He has a wife and three children....
- fober, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20No doubt it will be his first ride on a virgin.
HIYOOOOOOOO!!! - fober, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12He's had more than 1 wife. That wasn't my point.
- Nocturnal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10That's what I was wondering, I hope the training or whatever he needs to go through will have no affect on his health. If anything though, he really does deserve to go.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I can't wait for another ten or fifteen years when we can all do this for just a few grand, and maybe stay up there overnite too.
On the note of Hawking, I remember seeing an interview, when he was on the set of Star Trek TNG (he guest starred as a holographic representation of himself), he pointed to the warp core in the set for main engineering and said "im working on that" - R2C13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Awesome!
No word yet on a trip to a black hole? - bwjacket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Thanks for picking up on the sarcasm Shilov.
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6When he's up there he will discover that our universe is in a nutshell.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7it was probably buried becuase it was ***** retarded
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's "not that there's anything wrong with that"
- Zips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5In his field, I don't think there's anybody else more deserving of this. Good for him.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7because you're clearly superior to all three
- N00F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5His body may be broken, but I can think of few other people who are more deserving of such an experience. I hope he handles it well!
- Dested, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I knew it!"
- ray901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, given his condition I was wondering how he would physically prepare for such a journey. Hope he gets the opportunity to get all the way up there.
P.s. that's on in the eye for Shatner - GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'll ride on a virgin anything! Wait, maybe not anything.
- nahteecirp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4No. But you could clarify next time whether you wish us to digg you up or down. Usually people only say that if they want to get dugg down because they effectively deleted their post. I shall assume that is what you want.
- tmanka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think that space travel (liftoff) is VERY hard on the body...I hope he makes it.
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, I would love to see him go up and not need too much training. It might lower the bar, as it were, for regular folks to go up with less training or preparation than they take now. This might contribute to making it more accessible to everyone, if not in the economic sense (100K per hour in space? yikes!!), at least in terms of physical fitness.
- SteveRogers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not only do I feel he deserves this, I think it is necessary for him to experience this. In his field, the majority of his work is theorizing about the universe. Now he can experience being out there. He's said that the human race will need to go elsewhere to continue living, well these space flights are the first step and he gets to experience them. Good for him!
- JohnnyZito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't wait to blow my kid's college fund on a mid-life crisis trip to space.
- bkraft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is going to sound ridiculous, but does his computer translator have any sort of censoring device installed? Can Hawking actually tell someone to ***** off?
- Xanium4332, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i thought the virgin ships took off and landed like a plane?
- capiCrimm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, until the space-plane explodes.
Look Mommy, it's raining Lance Bass arms.
Oh Gee dear, isn't that great, do you want to fly in space too when you grow up too? - PaulLev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Space travel is one thing - as he long as he doesn't try time travel - see his Chronology Protection Conjecture.
- Shilov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Take a ride on the Virgin yo-yo. Were you expecting NASA to send you up for free or something? Gravity demands its tribute.
- zixx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here is a company that does the zero g flights for any one interested and has the money to afford it.
http://www.gozerog.com - stst399, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2> It's nice to see someone going into space that deserves it.
> When Lance Bass was supposed to be going up, it depressed the hell out of me.
Are you kidding? I was depressed that Lance Bass DIDN'T go up there. Don't you realize how beneficial it would be to get Lance Bass (or Justin Timberlake or Josh Groban or whoever else kids are listening to these days) into outer space? That's the kind of thing that inspires the next generation which increases consumer demand, and then, ultimately, lowers prices as the technology continues to be improved. We need this kind of pop exposure to help the privatization of space exploration to develop! - Soave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, it's his birthday today. (1/8/64) So... happy birthday.
- fober, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just realized, he's going to be such a dick in conversations when he gets back.
"Oh you don't think I'm right, huh? Well, have you been to space? No? Well then STFU." - smittyfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I highly doubt they would actually bring his wheelchair into space, considering there would be nothing for him to actually roll on.
- G-Force, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The real question that needs to be asked is if Hawkings frail body can survive a spaceflight.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oxygen will be an issue, but he'll be used to drinking his food.
- Stuntaneous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lol, daily telegraph.. news?
- geekgal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Who better(and more deserving) than him to visit space...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0once stephen hawking gets on that shuttle it gonna have to be renamed, The Loose Shuttle.
- troon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+08 January 1942, actually. He's 65 years old and many years past his expected sell-by date, so I suspect he's taking the risk while he still can.
- troon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe he'd be willing to take the risk of death or further deterioration. He's already living on a huge amount of borrowed time - I think if I were in his position, I'd go for it rather than risk dying without having been into space.
- vinnie175, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Are they going to have to pad the whole interior of the spaceship or is he just going to have to be strapped in the whole time. If they allow him to come unhooked, his wheelchair could damage the computers inside
- alcoholanon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0He'll have to be wearing one hell of a G suit to survive!!
- Osmanthus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This seems unlikely. The ascent into space is very jarring. Someone in Hawking's condition wouldn't qualify to ride a roller coaster let alone a space flight. The first thing I thought when I heard this was Hawking is announcing his own imminent death and he wants his ashes sent into space.
- jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2digg down = bury.
- Ghstfce, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0It's not like it's the first time vegetables made it into space... They all survived. But I do agree that this man out of all humanity should be able to go up there. After all, he's one of the biggest pioneers when it comes to space. Who else should be up there?
