- veskris, on 08/24/2008, -1/+9Imagine the breadth of life that can be contained in one picture. The average galaxy has billions of stars! Since the material that formed our planet is the same material found everywhere in the universe and since that material subsequently formed us; we can wager that by simply looking at this picture we might be looking at one, tens, hundreds, thousands, maybe millions of different life forms. These life forms could very well be more advanced than us given the young age of our planet within the time frame of the universe.
Given that possibility, somewhere, something in some galaxy must be looking back at our galaxy thinking, what if there's something there? Or is that enormous hunk of matter devoid of any life?
If we consider then that the universe contains billions of galaxies, with billions of said stars, and very likely billions of planets, then this is a thought that could be uttered so frequently that it's almost maddening to think that we have almost no chance of ever contacting them. Now,within our galaxy -- that's a different story.
Aren't you all glad we've been blessed with such wonderful minds to comprehend this stuff? - prleet, on 08/24/2008, -0/+4In amazement of the background galaxies...wow.
- PseudoThink, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3Glad we've been "blessed" with such wonderful minds, no...glad to have evolved them, yes. Sorry about policing creationism where probably none was intended, but we atheists/agnostics/absurdists/etc. have to start being more vigilant if we're going to have a chance in this amazing universe.
- Notasheeple, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3That is incredible.
Almost doesn't look real.
If each one of those bright spots are like our sun, that means each bright spot has the potential to be supporting several planets per sun. If each of those suns has the power to sustain life like ours, then NOT questioning other life forms seems kind of irrational. Because after all, in that one picture alone, the are perhaps millions of planets.
Just a thought. - BloodWenis, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3Agreed.
- RadiatedAnt, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3all of the colours are a lie, everything you see is artificially colored after the real pictures just so our eyes can better interpret them based on etcetera cetera google...

- AHardDaysNight, on 02/01/2009, -0/+2As we sit and admire this picture, we must acknowledge that humans will probably never visit it. In fact, nothing we have ever done or will ever do as a species will ever be known by anything that may exist in the Sculptor Galaxy. Yet, we share the same matter, the same laws of space and time. We are one but we are too distant from each other to ever share a single thought or creation, and shall be forever.
- ThankTheCheese, on 08/24/2008, -2/+3TRANSFOOOORM!!!!
- Thogster, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1That would be a galaxy, not a star. And certainly not a planet.
- suckaPU, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1i bet the lifeforms there arent nearly as big of ***** as they are here
- LongBong, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1i trip balls every time i looks at galaxy pic.s ...... there millions of suns there, many of which have a fair number planets, and there are billions of galaxys -like this one. we are so small and. i laugh at religious people who feel so important and loved.
- nonymous666, on 08/24/2008, -1/+2Cool. I've been looking for ideas for my next vacation. Something exotic and off the beaten path. Now I think I know where I want to go.
- LongBong, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1so what shud i actually be seeing? just a bunch of light?
- mrwoo, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1It's kinda like Andromeda. (M31)
- LongBong, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1 haha
- thatsgoodkarma, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1Not only that, but the wave of soft light throughout the galaxy is comprised of MILLIONS if not billions of stars. I see no reason why there can't be SOME other life somewhere. It's pictures like this and http://g42.org/images/Hubble_Deep_Field.jpg where each "star" is actually another galaxy. They can really make you realize how insignificant we actually are.
- uglypercy, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1I should have said "pics or it didn't happen" instead....
- MikeSetera, on 08/24/2008, -1/+1I don't understand how / why these get to the front page.
