- diggB, on 02/03/2008, -8/+196I'm predicting that thousands of desktop backgrounds are being updated right now ...
- dienaked, on 02/03/2008, -3/+157It's amazing what 30 year old technology can do.
- inactive, on 02/03/2008, -7/+77"Hello boys! I´m BACK!"
* Mothership explodes * - deeboe, on 02/03/2008, -2/+70Man, there are some cheesy comments in here!
- shadeOfGrey, on 02/03/2008, -0/+62In space, nothing is upside down.
- units, on 02/03/2008, -2/+54Technically, it's coming right for the photographer at more than 17,000 mph.
..mercifully, he's travelling away at roughly the same speed. - peterkay, on 02/03/2008, -6/+56I think someone left the doors open.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 02/03/2008, -1/+41Description from NASA website: ISS016-E-006333 (25 Oct. 2007) --- Backdropped by a blue and white Earth, Space Shuttle Discovery approaches the International Space Station during STS-120 rendezvous and docking operations. Docking occurred at 7:40 a.m. (CDT) on Oct. 25, 2007. The Harmony node is visible in Discovery's cargo bay.

- mal1964, on 02/03/2008, -1/+31The computer you are using right now has more power than the original computers on the shuttle
- moofer, on 02/03/2008, -0/+28I wonder how many miles are on that hog.
- Haecceity, on 02/03/2008, -16/+43Photoshopped. You can't see any stars.
- Mageling, on 02/03/2008, -0/+26Apparently Haecceity's joke went over everyone's head. It's a reference to the moon landing and how the exposure that the camera used doesn't catch stars in the background.
- piesforyou, on 02/03/2008, -0/+24Sharks with frickin laser beams of course!
- Haecceity, on 02/03/2008, -1/+24You haven't actually looked at the photograph, have you?
- justok, on 02/03/2008, -0/+21By using *classified redacted*
- moofer, on 02/03/2008, -2/+23Fail
- ndulacd, on 02/03/2008, -2/+22Scuzzlebutt!
- marksmayo, on 02/03/2008, -9/+28Well I'm glad somebody got the reference ;)
- sharkd, on 02/03/2008, -0/+18Upon orbit, the cargo bay doors are opened so that the radiators in the cargo bay can rid the shuttle of excess heat.
- theOster, on 02/03/2008, -0/+16they prob roll the odometer back, so it's hard to say
- MaverickC17, on 02/03/2008, -2/+17Not directly from earth like it may imply. The shuttle is doing the orbital pitch maneuver. It is a back flip so that people on the ISS can take pictures of the heat shield for inspection.
- stackered, on 02/03/2008, -5/+20Wow. Worst comment thread ever.
- m4ttGT, on 02/03/2008, -6/+21Do a barrel roll!
- kenyan, on 02/03/2008, -1/+16Need. Bigger. Screen.
- inactive, on 02/03/2008, -0/+14Mine doesn't :(
- Jeffler, on 02/03/2008, -1/+15I'd still like to know how that Powerbook was compatible with the mothership...
- mal1964, on 02/03/2008, -1/+15I'm sure at least a couple of oil changes
- mal1964, on 02/03/2008, -0/+13The Apollo program, started in July 1960 can still get you there and back, with a stop on the moon in between,
- VoiceofPower, on 02/03/2008, -0/+13http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_shuttle
In 2004, NASA announced that the Space Shuttle would be retired in 2010, and from 2014 on, would be replaced by the Orion, a new vehicle that is designed to take humans to the Moon and beyond. - sparcher, on 02/03/2008, -0/+13They...y'know...close them... before re-entering.
It aint rocket science... - nonymous666, on 02/03/2008, -1/+13woosh
- joegibes, on 02/03/2008, -2/+14Probably by dual-booting Linux.
- Haecceity, on 02/03/2008, -0/+11Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
- thcobbs, on 02/03/2008, -0/+11Its scary... they still launch the shuttle with Vacuum Tube technology. And better yet, there are 5 computers on the shuttle that handle flight ops.... and they don't have enough memory to hold the ENTIRE launch program in memory during the full launch. They actually have to swap out programs mid flight to continue to function properly.
But as scary as that is, the people who write the shuttle launch code have guaranteed that they will deliver 0 bugs per release, and it costs about 1mil per line of code to get a code change out the door and into the shuttle. And, to top it all off... they have delivered on that promise. Even during the challenger incident, the flight computer was STILL trying to make flight corrections up until impact with the ocean. - killerofkiller, on 02/03/2008, -0/+11actually the last time the computers where upgraded on the space shuttles was back in 1991, they are running on 386's right now
- Starhawk, on 02/03/2008, -0/+11Got it in one.
- inactive, on 02/03/2008, -10/+21Pictures like this remind me what a boring place this world would be without the United States of America.
- notsotricky, on 02/03/2008, -1/+12In your private life, how many times a day do people get uncomfortably quiet whenever you speak?
- bitterman316, on 02/03/2008, -3/+13Independence Day ?
- skidooer, on 02/03/2008, -1/+11Is it still legal if you yell it in the vacuum that is space?
- rentmitchum, on 02/03/2008, -3/+13Something very "i touch little boys" about that dude. He came off more gay than the gay guy who was supposed to be gay, Raspy McRaspingvoice. David. I gotta call my mutha! DAVID!
- S1ngular1ty1, on 02/03/2008, -0/+9Those tiles are the best thing for the job. NASA would have replaced them if there were better alternatives.
- jascination, on 02/03/2008, -3/+12Somewhat related: this one looks like a giant robot teddybear.
http://chamorrobible.org/images/photos/gpw-2005112 ... - aeiou, on 02/03/2008, -3/+12yeah, by a factor of about 10..... a few years back there was a story of nasa buying computer parts off of ebay to replace the old ones.
- Kershek, on 02/03/2008, -1/+10IT'S A TRAP!
- thefandango, on 02/03/2008, -0/+9i see what you did there.
- legendxx, on 02/03/2008, -1/+10as you should
- marm0lade, on 02/03/2008, -0/+9Doubtful.
