- ScottMcIntyre, on 08/22/2008, -0/+16An awesome rare photo clearly showing the 3 aligned planets.
Quote from article:
"On August 22nd from midnorthern latitudes, Saturn is becoming lost in the sunset, but look for bright Venus and use it to track down Mercury. Mars is a little bit higher up in Virgo and will be visible longer after sunset." - ZackScott, on 08/22/2008, -0/+11The title is weird because you can see 4 planets (Mars, Venus, Mercury, Saturn) in the sky, but you can also see a 5th planet. Earth! Haha. So you can see 5 planets at once. So what is it with this "trio" business anyway?
- ironeus, on 08/22/2008, -0/+9My eyes will be on the sky.
- DeskFlyer, on 08/22/2008, -0/+8Jupiter is also in the mix in the Southeast sky after sunset. It's planet fest!
- inactive, on 08/22/2008, -2/+7maybe i'll look up from my feet long enough to watch it. my head is really heavy these days. all in all, three aligned planets beats birkenstocks i guess.
- majordanger, on 08/23/2008, -1/+5As far as naked eye planet spotting, Mercury is a tough one to collect.
Tonight will be good opportunity to use Venus as a guide star.
Pluto is another hard one. I'm too old now, so I missed by chance.
To Spot Puto with the naked eye, you need a lot of perfect conditions:
Fairly young eyes that have been dark adapted for at least an hour.
A high altitude viewing site away from cities on a moonless, cloudless, still air night .
Then Pluto needs to be in the zenith (directly above) and you have to know exactly where to look.
You have to use averted vision (look slightly off axis) because the rods are more sensitive to low light then the cones.
A hit or two off of an Oxygen bottle will help reduce the dulling effects of the high altitude and increase your night vision.
Then you have to say very convincingly in front of the other campers.... "I think I see it...Yes, that's IT!" - RapidEye, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3Uranus and Neptune are also up in the evening now, but harder to see without optical aid.
Both are doable with just average binoculars, but you have to know what to look for and you'll only see a small blue dot for each - you need closer to 150x or 200x and a 4" or larger scope to see either dot start to turn into a small disk. - splorpdotorg, on 08/23/2008, -0/+2Did someone downgrade us to dwarf planet when I wasn't looking?
- SadMartigan, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Yes, Jupiter hangs out almost all night long.
- thegrantman, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1Look at TheLegendaryChad in the comments. Isn't he precious?
- doublefelix, on 08/23/2008, -2/+3It's cool when you can see them and all, but with the unaided eye they just look like lame stars.
- zooey1234, on 08/22/2008, -3/+4Any disturbances in our solar system?
- nuvarsity, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1wasn't this one of the signs that that the niburu were real or something? idk, i watch way too many vids about aliens & ***** when i'm high... cool view though. I wish i could see them.
