- DeskFlyer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16That's no moon....
- phantoms5000, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15The pictures in that article are captioned wrong, those galaxys they are showing aren't that close, if they were they'd be between us and the sun.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13I signed up and did some... but a lot of them can be really hard. It's either tough to tell which way it's spiraling or borderline Star/Don't know
- henrik.falk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7It's kind of zoomed in you know. Due to the pictures being of other galaxies.
- DeskFlyer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I shall not object to your demand.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Right you are.. looks like they said "miles" where they meant "light years."
- Jeeum, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5There is a huge error in your comment. It says the same as the third comment.
- Sunscreen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5This is cool.
- thiver, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I am pretty sure, that every galaxy will be classified many times by different users. And my guess would be, that where there is clear group consensus like if spiral galaxy is checked 85/100 votes we have a classification and where there will be a tie, specialists will have their say.
- TheCatsPants, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Well, it is the daily mail. The average hack reporter doesn't know the difference and probably wouldn't care anyway.
- MasterThief117, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5It gets tough. I though this was going to be a lot easier, but instead there are blobs which can either be starts or cluster galaxies. What is also annoying is that there is no back button. I hope my say is not the final say.
- scrag10, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5May I Say best Idea Ever?
- eclectro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well it's worth it to stay with it because every seventy or so you come accross a really interesting object. They need to get the forums going so we can discuss these. They need to collect statistics on user accuracy. Also, I think that there ought to be incentives, like prizes or something. It doesn't need to be much, but it would make people continue on without dropping out.
- Wireddd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3a galaxy/blurry button would be nice...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3just looked below it and saw the caption for another galaxy that is supposedly 27 million miles away.. appearently they don't know the difference between miles and light years. andromeda, the closest galaxy to the milk way is 2.5 million light years away.. that's 1.47 Ă— 10^19 miles
so i guess there are two really small galaxies between here an jupiter... nice job daily mail. - bytecolor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Very cool project only...
Q: What does a blurred imaged of a spiral galaxy resemble?
A: An elliptical galaxy - TopDerek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The site was bugging out on me earlier. I tried IE, Firefox and Safari and they all came up with a runtime error. Wrote the webmaster to let him know and he responded with this interesting tid bit.
Thank you for your help, we'll try to look into the problem. I think essentially it's just the amazing response to the site we're seeing right now. We've had somewhere around six million hits in the first day which exceeded our expectations by a lot.
6 Million brains would make a pretty good galaxy analyzing human computer. - Tanath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21000 pixels would be about 32x32, which is about the size of a taskbar icon.
- HairyFotr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I know it can create linux.. but if it can also run it? If so... the singularity is near :)
- j00b, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yea I hope my say isn't the final say either because there were a few that I wish I could change to 'don't know'.
- j00b, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I love it...
Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids - StarManta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2As I understand it you should click Edge-on for any spiral you can't tell the direction of.
- Minarbles, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Now when I'm wasting time at work, I can feel like I'm doing something constructive!
- wazzadoin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You have an opportunity to enrich understanding of the universe.
- LucasVB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2... Which is terribly sad.
- billsil, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2condom tester
- jhshukla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i agree. btw humans are incredibly powerful at recognizing patterns. a while ago there was a story (here or /. - i don't remember) where one person correctly identified sean connery from 6x6 thumbnail of his face. granted that he must be exceptionally good, if rest of the people are even quarter as good we have an immense potential to solve problems.
- jdoc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Images for the project are taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which uses a 142-megapixel digital camera to create the largest digital map of the universe."
Where do I buy that? - nijato, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hive-mind workout: you don't have to be right 100% of the time - just more often than you're wrong (8/15). Good user interface, hope they have good.algorithms as well.
- jgzman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Eh. So far I've never had a problem with Star/Unknown, but I have the occasional problem between Elliptical and Spiral on edge, when it's fuzzy, but thin.
- jhshukla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1well, it is inspired from stardust@home. so it may be the best but it is not unprecedented.
- Jemm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2No wonder they need public to help...
- Exploit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1OK. I got an image of a galaxy that I m unsure. I want to skip it but there is no NEXT button. What to do?
- YourTechSupport, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1But can it play DOOM?
- Lewie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Obviously this isn't marketed towards you.
Why submit stories or comments on Digg if you're not getting paid for it? And why the hell would anyone pursue a hobby if they're not getting paid to do it? - Exploit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Spilled orange juice?
- Monstradamus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3lol, wtf is this supposed to be? http://img510.imageshack.us/my.php?image=getjpegaspx2hs5.jpg
- TheSpore, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Direct Link: http://www.galaxyzoo.org/Default.aspx
- Alteran, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Awesome Idea, its just too bad that most of them are REALLY blurry, for the ones that are clear, they are cool pics, nice place to load up on galaxy pics.
- billsil, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1there's no way a compy could analyze half those blurry lo res jpegs. for most of those you'll need someone WAY smarter than me.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1HUGE typo on one of the captions.. it says "Elliptical galaxy M87is 60 million miles away" 60 million MILES you say? that's odd considering that the distance from the earth to the sun is 93 million miles... must be a really small galaxy somewhere between here and jupitor.
- maci01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1ROFLMAO MERGER MERGER MERGER.
Maybe they're trusting the internet a bit too much. Statistics will be interesting to look at.. - ChrisGranger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I'm interested in astronomy and all, but this strikes me as really, really boring. I can see people doing a couple and quitting. I wish them success though. The universe is amazingly huge and cataloging galaxies is quite an undertaking.
- mattrh, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4***** them, Im not doing their bitchwork.
- scrag10, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I call WoW.

- Monstradamus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2OMG this one is even sexier http://img502.imageshack.us/my.php?image=getjpegaspx3uu3.jpg
- mstoneburner, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Why should I do someone else's job for them without getting paid for it?
- swazo, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4The Galaxy of Goatse and Tubgirl shall be mine!
- billsil, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1*****...low res...kinda fun tho...
