- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -4/+1421970s technology is a marvel to behold. Aren't the space shuttles supposed to be in the Smithsonian by now?

Women, always talking, even while installing a FREAKING ROCKET ENGINE. - gavdana, on 09/13/2008, -0/+50One is ... the Enterprise, used for the original glide testing. It's so functional that NASA has to swing by periodically and pull parts off to replenish the remainder of the fleet.

It is quite simply breathtaking to see the sheer scale of the operation, and having the chance to speak 1 on 1 to a genuine astranought is very intresting. They also have some amazing imax thearters and a superb ride that similated the shuttle take off.... it is like a living science museum.
For me it was far far far superior to anything else in the Orlando area (except possibly Mission Space at Epcot which is simply breathtaking!). The Kennedy Space center really does not get the credit it deserves from the millions of tourists that vist the area every year.... seriously, its worth the trip on its own. - TVarmy, on 09/14/2008, -1/+25The older chips tend to stand up better than modern chips to cosmic rays. Also, they don't need the newest and fastest chips for everything. If it's mission critical, it just has to not fail, meaning they should go with chips they've found to be very reliable when faced with the kinds of radiation in space. I've heard the fastest chips built in to the space station are about the same speed as 386s.
Here's an interesting article on what's on board, and the rationale behind those choices. http://www.dansdata.com/spacecomp.htm - RevAradia, on 09/13/2008, -4/+27They ARE cool. I've seen this stuff because my ex-husband use to be a Payload Engineer. He was friends with the guy who went up from Hughes Aircraft in the Challenger (rest their souls) when it blew up. It was the darkest day for the space program short of the one that went a short time back. I was really sick then though so I don't remember a lot about that. You have no idea how fragile that thing is til you see one blow up right in front of you. I was there that day.
- kevlar21, on 09/13/2008, -0/+22cool ass-pics!
- CrimsonBlur, on 09/13/2008, -7/+26Rarely seen? I have seen pictures exactly like these dozens of times. I'm not saying they aren't cool pictures, but give me a break with this headline.
Doesn't anyone watch Discovery? - InsaneOni, on 09/14/2008, -0/+19The crazier thing is that That 1970's technology was developed only 60 years after we first discovered flight. Think about that for a second. We went from Kittyhawk to the Moon in less than 70 years. I find that completely amazing.
- ShadowofAres, on 09/14/2008, -1/+20But when you drop a Space Shuttle, it doesn't stop working.
- BossKey, on 09/14/2008, -1/+20There's about as much 1970s technology left in the current shuttles as there is 1950s technology left in the B-52 bombers currently being flown.
- woodyinthehoody, on 09/13/2008, -7/+24What the hell is NASA compensating for ehh?
- CATSCEO2, on 09/14/2008, -2/+17LOL‽

- crazzy88ss, on 09/13/2008, -0/+12It's so amazing how they put that thing on a giant vehicle and drive it out to the launch pad.
- elnerdo, on 09/14/2008, -0/+12And then we went from the moon landing to... nowhere. In less than forty years. Amazing.
- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -0/+12Well that never gets old...
/sarcasm - unAntimatter, on 09/14/2008, -0/+11If I could choose what my taxes paid for, I'd mark "All Money to NASA and affiliates."
If you ask me, science is a more worthy endeavor than war... or bridges to nowhere. - inactive, on 09/14/2008, -1/+11They'll be retired in 2010 (although with a possible extenstion to 2012). Hopefully the Constellation program will be on schedule and operational in 2014.
- dudetaz2003, on 09/14/2008, -0/+10Wow I do not know where to start with the level of of stupidity.

- Timpala, on 09/14/2008, -0/+8I saw a presentation by the lead investigator on the Columbia accident. The shuttle was moving at 1570 MPH and the 1.7 pound piece of foam imparted 4500 pounds of force at impact. Basically Columbia's leading edge of its wing was struck by a mid-sized truck during take-off.
More detail here. http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/investigation ... - drunkenkite, on 09/13/2008, -1/+9Hey dont feel bad, *I* got the joke.
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -4/+12LOL.
- orangeguitar311, on 09/14/2008, -0/+8Actually the constellation program has it done right. If you put the crew module on top, you don't have to worry about foam flying off of the fuel tank and damaging heat shields. Plus going with wings was not the best idea seeing as how a piece of foam was able to damage one enough to cause Columbia to explode on re-entry. Besides, I don't see any way for the Shuttle to land on the mood and make it back since all it has no way to lift off on its own.
- roguewriter, on 09/14/2008, -0/+8Basically, it comes down to funds. Yes, if NASA had been given the funds they needed, the Shuttles would be in the Smithsonian and other museums. They weren't give the money.
Why?
Too many politicians who know jack about the space program, and believe that investing in NASA is literally throwing money away. One politician in an interview on CNN years ago basically said that giving NASA funds was tantamount to baling up stacks of money to be thrown away while in orbit.
Oh, and Enterprise isn't the only orbiter that's being used for parts. - inactive, on 09/14/2008, -0/+8so, a lot.
- badenglishihave, on 09/13/2008, -8/+16And less "lolz McCain"/"lolz Palin." We get it already, he's an old codger and she's inept. Let's get on with our lives.
- aflaks, on 09/14/2008, -0/+8this is over 30 years old; invalid
- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -0/+7McCain is old
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -1/+7NASA could have scored some points by having a hottie in Daisy Duke shorts and halter top riding it in.

Nope.
It kind of makes you wanna-

Yep.
Boom de yada. - twishart, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6the nebula? I was scrolling through and that made me think it blew up at the end for a second :/

- VodkanLemons, on 09/13/2008, -2/+7are you a Canadian?
- aptanalogy, on 09/14/2008, -2/+7Inept Palin is inept.
- uselessexpert, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5WOW!!! Incredible pictures! Thanks for the submit!
- osiris24x, on 09/14/2008, -2/+6Soon. NASA is auctioning off several shuttles to various museums as they prepare to rebuild them with modern technology. Sure took 'em long enough.
What most people don't realize is that your iPhone has more processing power than the shuttle's entire onboard computer system. Sad, really. -
