- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -4/+50Nice to see the flying spaghetti monster smiling down on us.
- EmitStop, on 11/30/2008, -2/+20RAmen.
- zirce, on 04/04/2009, -0/+17I think you want new neighbours.
- Princeamor, on 11/30/2008, -0/+15Wait.. so you can only see this if you're in Australia? : (
- indochris609, on 12/01/2008, -0/+10I bet it's guerrilla marketing for Daft Punk.
- uptwolait, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9Good luck differentiating your head from your ass.
- Archcoder, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9:)
- DeathMarcher, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9Take shelter, baboons are attacking!
- Danoz, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9I saw this last night. the smiley face resemblance isn't as great as the article would make out. It looks more like this:
•         •
U
(EDIT: backslashes wont save in the comments... so you get a U instead) - TheCoreh, on 12/01/2008, -0/+7I'm in Brazil, and I noticed it today. Even if kinda distorted.
I wonder if it will look correct tomorrow?
I hope it works for all the Southern Hemisphere - Visual77, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6It's actually not hard.
Planets tend to be brighter and they do not twinkle in the way stars do.
Once you know the signs, it's a piece of cake to spot planets. - inactive, on 12/01/2008, -1/+7Are you guys sirius?
- Pookatooka, on 12/01/2008, -1/+7Any chance there is a live feed of Australia's sky out there on the internet?
- Azadre, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5I think there needs to be less journalists in the world who fail to understand what they are writing... "A rare cosmic alignment tonight will produce a smiling face - or an emoticon, depending on your generation - high over the country" An emoticon of :) represents a smiling face. No one would confuse a smiling star for a colon and closing parenthesis.
- homerang, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5Wait... so you think planetary convergences are cool, but debase people who think they are cool enough to go see them from an observatory?
Also, don't the media USUALLY show up on TV? TV news IS a medium. - nitrol3n3, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5goto: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kadastudios/307240754 ...
I put this up sorry it isn't a great shot. But this is in San Diego today 11/30/08 before the Marine Layer rolled in. - cinder, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4The Moon will appear much closer to Jupiter and Venus tomorrow night, making it look more like the articles picture.
- Sornos, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4It is incredibly easy. Look for the two brightest objects just after sunset. That's Jupiter and Venus. You can't miss them on a clear night.
- nardo510, on 12/01/2008, -1/+5I dont understand why your being dugg down for your comment.
- Impressa, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4I have nothing to say.
- Zarokima, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4It seems so. Or thereabouts, probably. It just mentioned no US or Europe. I'd bet Indonesians and New Zealanders at least will be able to see it, too.
- uptwolait, on 12/01/2008, -1/+5Have you been drinking beetle juice?
- awhiteflame, on 12/01/2008, -1/+5Yeah. It's too bad we all melt or whatever is going to happen on 21 December 2012.
- andoru, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4It changes pretty rapidly. The moon travels about 1/28th of the way around the sky each day, and the planets will have changed position too.
- H4n90fThur5D4y5, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4I live in the U.S. and I saw this while I was out for a walk tonight. I was looking up and I was thinking "Hey...does it usually do that? 0_o" It wasn't perfect though, looked a little elongated, but it was definitely visible. I was thinking what a great avatar it would make, if I'd had a camera with me.
- Icebird, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4haha, "In the United States, the effect will be inverted and will appear as a frown." :
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197 ... - wolfshawk, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3By the time they are visible in the US the Moon will have moved above the planets in it's orbit. Too bad, the cool stuff always happens on the other side of the planet. But hey, we get a solar eclipse in 2017.
- sockpuppets, on 12/01/2008, -3/+6I looked out my window, all I see is 8=====D
- borninda818, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3If you live in LA like I do the planets and about a dozen stars are the only things you can see. Somewhat depressing really.
- bariswheel, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3A lolclipse would sure brighten my day, or wait...
- rockstar1o9, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Is this just Australia? (or just the southern hemisphere?) Or can you view this from other parts of the world?
- expatcatalyst, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Saw it tonight in Northern California, but much more elongated...
- expatcatalyst, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Saw this tonight in California and it was...very cool...
- noPCtoday, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3C:
- Dougman82, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3Well, that, and NOBODY, outside of webpages and chat programs, actually uses the term "emoticon." It will always be a smiley face.
- ziromix, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
- Doomsan, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2I just saw it before reading this, and yes, it's pretty apart,
- Pookatooka, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2No Lacoste? No Boss? No Tommy Bahama? No Michael Kors? Sounds crappy.
Dumbass - Azadre, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2fewer* not less
- TrendyTim, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2You do realize a lot of the cool stuff is in the northern hemisphere, like the aurora which you cant see in the southern hemisphere without going to Antarctica, and most of the meteor showers seem to happen up north as well.
- RubberBinder, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3I saw a very long face in the sky in Orange County, CA. Maybe it's a coincidence that the moon is positioned so that two relatively close stars form the eyes in a way similar to that of the planets mentioned in the article, or I see the same thing. =/
- kd1s, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Venus and Jupiter are very bright in the southwest sky between 5PM and 6:30PM EST. I saw them last night. I wish I'd had my camera with me.
- carbonfilament, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3In America it looks more like ) :
- LucasVB, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Still, it's pretty much a loooong face ( :
- GlitchEnzo, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2I think it's cool that you linked to Augustana College's website. I have been to their observatory. (I actually drove past it everyday for 4 years.)
- Kerrigore, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3FSM? I was thinking something more like this:
http://helios.augustana.edu/isaapt/f00/img/solar-e ...
Perhaps we should watch out for spontaneous superpowers tomorrow? - zyklon, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Downed, reported and blocked. Enjoy.
- zyklon, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2That's one hell of a budget they've got then...
- archer104, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Ahhh, I should have said sirius as cancer. *****! I had the perfect setup!
