Those little guys are awesome!! - meatmaker, on 11/08/2008, -0/+23Awesome. This should be heralded as on of NASA's and JPL's greatest successes. Long Live Spirit and Opportunity!
- xieodeluxed, on 11/08/2008, -0/+23Wow, much respect to those NASA engineers. I hope the trend continues :)
- MakanGuru, on 11/08/2008, -0/+16those 2 rovers are just about the best things NASA ever built, along with the Voyager, Pioneer and Apollo systems
- Zervaman, on 11/08/2008, -0/+15NASA is ***** amazing.
- Konrad9, on 11/08/2008, -1/+15I have no idea what you just said but I'm pretty sure you're ***** crazy.
- Sornos, on 11/08/2008, -0/+14If I were to have a machine be vital to my health, I'd want it built by the same guys who built those rovers. They just keep trucking.

- Brogey, on 11/08/2008, -2/+14Long after we're gone from this gracious orb, NASA's achievements will serve as fossils to our intelligence and not our stupidity...they need not be blessed by any God, they bless mankind.
- humanerror, on 11/08/2008, -0/+11YOUR MEDS
Take them. - RogerStrong, on 11/08/2008, -0/+8Britain underfunded a lander and it wasn't successful. The US had nothing to do with it. They didn't "take it to Mars" - it hitched a ride on a European Space Agency orbiter.
Grow up. - Azerael, on 11/08/2008, -0/+8Wtf are you smoking? Would you prefer they didn't take any pictures? NASA are the last people who would claim they owned Mars, or the moon. That's the politicians' job.
- inobla, on 11/08/2008, -0/+8What a horrible comment. Since when have NASA or the United States claimed they own Mars? Look at all of the science learned that NASA is freely sharing with the rest of the world. Get your head out of your ass.
If China, Japan, the UK, Russia, or even Cuba for that matter sent something up there that succeeded that well, and they shared the scientific data with everybody, I'd be cheering them on as well! I was very disappointed when the UK's Beagle II never answered after landing. I was checking the web site daily and very hopeful for the project. Your comment makes it sound as if we (the US) somehow sabotaged it. Grow up dude. - Zervaman, on 11/08/2008, -0/+7I think it was a naming contest given to kids.
- SaucyJack, on 11/08/2008, -0/+71. Beagle 2 was not a "rover" at all.
2. Your quotes around "crashes" seems to indicate some sort of conspiracy? Why would NASA bother to do that?
3. NASA have never said they own Mars or the Moon. "We came in peace for all Mankind" is the message on the Apollo plaque left on the surface.
4. No-one "owns" the solar system.
5. Transformers, Armageddon and Independence Day are not factual documentaries.
...should be a full Moon soon Lampy. Then you can resume your usual position of standing on a roof howling at it. - Johaen, on 11/08/2008, -0/+6Buried for lack of intelligence
- MSP1, on 11/08/2008, -2/+8The human brain is almost a machine for finding faces in any kind of pattern so grow up and stop being so gullible.
- Hypatia42, on 11/08/2008, -0/+5Whoever designed these plucky little buggers should consult on our economy. I'd love to get this kind of return on everything.
Go science! Go little oddly-named rovers! - RogerStrong, on 11/08/2008, -1/+5Yes, they have. Both the Americans and the Europeans have taken high quality photos of the area from orbit.
But the face just looks like shadows on a mountain at higher resolution, and when the sun isn't just right. So the tinfoil hat crowd ignores them. - Azerael, on 11/08/2008, -1/+5They haven't "properly surveyed" 99% of the Martian surface.
- psevium, on 11/08/2008, -0/+4If they had an online poll, it'd be VASTLY different.
- Dustmuffins, on 11/08/2008, -2/+5Powered by Energizer ®
- orion2013, on 11/08/2008, -0/+3keep on moving plucky rovers
- Codename, on 11/08/2008, -2/+5How do they pick the rovers name?
- sockpuppets, on 11/08/2008, -2/+5John is an accomplished writer and has published hundreds of articles.
--Sockpuppets - lynchjo, on 11/07/2008, -5/+8Great post! I love the rich images of the "Opportunity Rover" on the Martian landscape.
--John - Azerael, on 11/08/2008, -0/+3I'm not American, buddy.
- TheInformer, on 11/08/2008, -0/+3The Energizer Bunny has nothing on the Mars Rovers.
- calebh, on 11/08/2008, -0/+3I wish I could bury this a million times. No other country has had a rover on mars that lasted as long as these two. No other country has sent a man to the moon.
- sremick, on 11/08/2008, -0/+2I still have to wonder why they didn't incorporate some sort of wiper-brush to dust off the solar panels. It's not like windshield-wiper technology is all that elaborate, and it would've gone a long way towards extending the rovers' lives even further.
- Taiyoryu, on 11/08/2008, -1/+3@psevium
The rovers would be named Rick and Astley (or Roll) - steviesteveo, on 11/08/2008, -0/+2Spam link, comment buried.
- FattyRooster, on 11/08/2008, -2/+3Hopefully these rovers don't get destroyed by transformers
- sremick, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1They ALWAYS plan some ridiculously small and conservative estimated lifespan. It makes declaring "success" a lot easier.
And incorporating the wipers would've allowed them to plan for something more than 90 days. - inobla, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1Called foul on their space walk? No we didn't. I think it's awesome China is getting involved in the space race. I hope it fosters healthy competition like it did between the US and Russia. I wasn't happy about the arms race, but the space race - both countries benefited tremendously from that. If China works hard for it they deserve it as much as everybody else. I look forward to the United States working with China on future projects like the ISS.
Where do you get this anti-America anti-NASA propaganda from? I'm genuinely curious. - scottblystone, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1I think they were only planning on 90 days so the wipers would have seemed to be pointless. after these rovers, I'm sure they'll consider wipers on future missions as more desirable.
- DaviDTC, on 11/08/2008, -3/+3Not updated that often http://twitter.com/marsrovers
More NASA missions http://www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/home/twitter.html - inactive, on 11/08/2008, -2/+2WTF.
This is the 2nd or 3rd time I read about them "dying' then coming back.
Knock it off. - mr5150, on 11/08/2008, -4/+3And just like 'Wall-E' the rovers power up in the sunlight and chime just like a Mac waking up and continue doing their jobs.......Dugg!
- inactive, on 11/08/2008, -3/+1Adderall............. take some!
- lampshade101, on 11/08/2008, -5/+0Yeah it is always NASA though. I honestly could not care less where the data comes from, as it is everyone's explain this to me, maybe with your head out of your American ass, why is that when someone else tries to make a push for space i.e. China's space walk, the Americans call foul? Somehow, it does not make sense, and I wish someone would explain it, without saying RA RA RA AMERICA!!!!!!!
- AlphaDrake, on 11/08/2008, -7/+1Am I the only one who wants to name the thing "Rover". As in the dog name?
- lampshade101, on 11/08/2008, -8/+01. Beagle may not have been a rover, but it was still a probe.....no *****!
2. Well it seems kind of convenient doesn't it? US takes over, it crashes?
3. American flag on the moon? Maybe get rid of that, and the argument could be justifiable.
4. It is our's to share, not to claim?
5. Wow, you are a smart cookie aren't you? Hollywood makes false movies. I am truly amazed! I never knew!? - lampshade101, on 11/08/2008, -8/+0Not crazy.......Just not American. Yes there are countries other than American in the world *****
- lampshade101, on 11/08/2008, -8/+0As I stated earlier. It would be nice to see a Chinese, or European lander actually surviving, and not just the Americans, you wonder why the world gets pissy with you.
- lampshade101, on 11/08/2008, -20/+0Buried for lack of intelligence
- lampshade101, on 11/08/2008, -28/+1What ever happens to the rovers of the rest of the world? Remember the Beagle 2 lander? Launched by the UK, and then the US take it to Mars, and it "crashes"? Honestly, NASA is quite full of themselves, believing that America is now the country that owns Mars, much like the moon. I am sick of it! Everyone owns the solar system, not just the first country to fake landings on the moon. OK, well done you put two exploratory vehicles on Mars, that should have shut down, but they didn't. Maybe you built them to not? Then you can say "OMFG WOW THEY STILL WORK", while the world congratulates. Get your head out of your arse NASA, and realize that no matter how amazing these images are, you are still lying and being total pricks to the rest of the world. The classic American way! Maybe Obama will stand up to his promise and change the country.
