- DrunkenDigger, on 07/02/2008, -0/+28It's insane to think about how far out that little probe is.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -1/+24Did anyone really think that the solar system was round?
- wishninja, on 07/02/2008, -1/+10I wonder if one day we will build something that will overtake voyager's distance.
Just to be a dick:
I really didn't think anyone ever assumed the heliosphere was round. Also there were no pictures of it just data indicating magnetic flux. So poster could have posted the equivalently relevant story title "Drawings Reveal Solar System is Not a Cube But Egg-shaped" - Duositex, on 07/03/2008, -0/+7I read this article yesterday and it really bothers me that they refer to "pictures".
There are NO pictures involved here, just measurements made by TWO probes. The only imagery available is an artist's rendition of the data. The "pictures" don't reveal a damn thing. - uptwolait, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6I wonder if that's due to the velocity and direction of our solar system as it moves through space, kind of like doppler shifting of sound waves.
- FanofFilm, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6More like the compression of air in front of an aircraft or car or anything that moves through the atmosphere. The particles from the solar wind interact with interstellar medium. Here, this explains it better than i can in a comment system. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bow_shock
- sagat, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Got to love after all these years the Voyager probe is still sending data and making discoveries. I just hope that it's last discovery isn't colliding with a painted wall like the boat in the Truman show.
- lengau, on 07/03/2008, -1/+5Mmm... Cadbury's caramel-filled easter eggs...
- 30thElement, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3That's not what they're talking about. They are talking about how the heliosphere (a lot like an atmosphere for the sun that goes out very far, made up of the solar wind) is compressed in the front by the interstellar medium. That happens a lot farther out then the planets.
- drunkmonkey01, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3lets see it then
- AmaDaden, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kepler%27s_laws_of_pl ...
Yep. "The Solar System is not round" is about 400 years old. However, I think the news is in the 'egg shape' part as in "it's not an ellipse it's more of an egg". - bblande, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3Voyager probes reach end of solar system: achievement unlocked.
- deralte, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Actually I'm more surprised that Voyager 2 is lasting this long. I'd like to see a hand held device from Apple doing that ;)
- iamnobody8614, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2lol, I'm not sure boiling a Cadbury egg would work out so well.
- Lunarbunny, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Not exactly what you would consider an "atmosphere" like on a planet, but a collection of gasses (generally hydrogen, although since we're in an area that's considered to be the remnants of a number of supernovae, probably some heavier elements as well) and energetic particles released by surrounding stars and perhaps old supernovae. Since they are contained in what's otherwise a vacuum, they are extremely dispersed compared to a true planetary atmosphere.
- mugwumpz, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3VEE-juhr
- oboredone, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2I find it amazing that they still work after all this time in space.
- Synge, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2I had no idea. No one really knew until now I thought....
- Gauthic, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Although that would make the closed-minded, naziesque fundamentalists quite happy to sneer at that blasphemous, newfangled cult called "Science".
- pinchduck, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2you can tell if it's hard boiled by spinning it real fast. A hard boiled solar system will stand up, while an uncooked solar system just kind of wobbles around.
- dbhalla, on 07/03/2008, -2/+3mmm... boiled universe
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1And researchers also believe that the earth is not flat but spherical.
- arjie, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2News about deep space probes really gets me all pumped. Just the other day I was reading about the Pioneer Anomaly and the Pioneer spacecraft. Really interesting stuff.
- 3leggedHorse, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2We are all living in bubbles inside other bubbles.
- Ramble, on 07/03/2008, -2/+3No it isn't.
- TallestSkil, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1^You're right. It's squashed at the equator, not stretched at the poles.
- FanofFilm, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1just drawing a comparison. that's why i wrote "like" in the air.
- mttyd, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1It's egg shaped because the earth is flat... Duh.
- jorad, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I think I already knew this from 'Mork and Mindy'.
- Zoltair, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Nothing new here, they always said the orbits were elliptical not spherical, duh.....How could anyone assume the solar system was round....
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I have been known to make some bubbles in my day...
- Markpdotcom, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1But is there an atmosphere in space? I thought it was a void like vacuum?
- kevman459, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I thought they had lost contact when they cruised past Pluto a number of years ago.
- Dred, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Maybe we will hatch soon
- hakkola, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Everywhere, he is omnipotent. :D
- Elshar, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Some kind of ad or something? Doesn't everyone use firefox with adblock? I haven't seen any in a very, very long time. :)
- yourbrokenoven, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1this is old news. i can verify that this is late 90's highschool science textbook information.
- Spetz, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I can confirm that this is old news. I've known it for ages.
- hapax, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2And who laid the egg? There must be some Divine Chicken who created something so egg-squisitely designed to incubate life.
- nxtitle, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0... thanks tips
- banderwocky, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1Where's your God now??!?
- minorthreat, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2yea a big no ***** is deserved for this one.
- chaosblade77, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0That's crazy talk.
- scorpeonster, on 07/03/2008, -1/+0
The advocates of the new theory must be feelin proud about their innovation, but hardly matter whether ecology is round, egg-shaped or flat, as everybody is leaving no stone unturned in destroying the system ……..World peace - seanfyfe, on 07/03/2008, -1/+0I thought Cylons, or Romulans used Voyageur for target practice in one of the shows..
- 11Christine, on 07/03/2008, -1/+0It was never considered perfectly round actually. But now we have detailed information on what exactly it's shape is.
- ghidorahnotweak, on 07/02/2008, -6/+5Is that a Cadbury egg?
- Monkiest, on 07/03/2008, -3/+2Was going to write something profound about eggs and life but was distrated by a dancing fat man in the top right of my screen and lost my train of thought. ***** you fat man, ***** you.
